Chapter 1 Leader

“A re you sure you can handle this?” I ask August distractedly as I run a scan on my computer for all current cyborgs living within the city. A total of five pulls up. Four are currently working for either a company or are personally owned, which only leaves one that I can track down and ask to come work for me. Great. His last listed residence is down by the wall . “Shit, this isn’t good.” “What isn’t?” August replies, sounding a tad bit bored. “Nothing you need to worry about.” I leave the data open on my computer so I can return to it after I send August on his mission. He needs to leave ASAP, not only because Ava’s—my next potential superhero —curse is about to be collected, but also, it’s a little unnerving having a zombie in my office. “Then what do I need to worry about?” August asks, reclining back in the seat across from my desk. “Because you never explained that to me when you asked me to come here. You’re lucky I even showed up. I usually don’t agree to do a favor without knowing what the favor is.” “Then why did you agree to come here?” I place my overlapped hands on the desk. “I mean, not that I’m not grateful. But usually zombies have zero emotions, well except brain hunger, so getting them to do anything for someone else is nearly impossible.” Then I quickly tack on, “No offense or anything.” The last thing I want is to upset a creature that could and would eat my brains directly from my head. He lifts his shoulders, giving a sluggish shrug. “I’m not really sure, other than I guess it seems like I owe you for saving me from death.” He wavers. “Well, maybe ‘saving me from death’ is the wrong choice of words since technically I’m still dead.” He chews on his bluish black lip as he studies me with his eyes that are thankfully a silver-ish grey instead of blood red.

If his eyes were red, I’d be pressing the emergency button in my top desk drawer, since red eyes on a zombie mean hungry. And if you know anything about zombies, you know what they’re one and only food choice is. My hand instinctively wanders to my head in a protective gesture. “You’re worried I’m going to eat you,” August notes with a trace of amusement. “You’re amused?” I lower my hand to my desk, intrigued by the hint of emotion in his eyes. August shrugs. “Perhaps. But only by the idea that you think I’m going to eat you.” “Why do you find that amusing?” “I’m not really sure, other than I don’t think I ever would eat your brain.” “You wouldn’t, huh?” My tone carries a bit of skepticism. “You created me.” He props his foot onto his knee and restlessly taps his black fingernails against his leg. “And you let me feed off the discarded brains left over from your mad scientist experiments. I may be a cold hearted zombie, but I know better than to bite the hand that feeds me.” “Have you ever fed off someone?” I ask. When he blasts me with a cold, dark look, I raise my hands in front of me. “I’m not judging you. I’m simply curious.” His knee bounces up and down as he grows more restless. “I may have slipped up once or twice.” “That’s not too bad for your kind,” I tell him. “Most slip up every day.” He frowns. “But I’m only able to control my hunger better because you created me to be this way, right?” “Yes, I created you to have a stronger will against giving into your brain hunger, so you wouldn’t run the streets murdering people, which is a good thing. But I don’t understand why you seem so upset that I made you that way.” And why does he seem upset at all? Zombies aren’t supposed to get upset.

He fiddles with a leather band on his wrist. “I’m not upset. I just get a bit lonely sometimes.” “I’m not sure what you mean… Lonely how?” “Lonely in the sense that I’m the only one of my kind. All the other zombies I’ve ever met want to eat brains all the time. They crave them more than anything else, and they’ll do anything to get them. Me…” He bobs his head from side to side, deliberating. “I rationalize before I attack, which more often than not, ends with me not attacking at all and coming here to eat brains instead.” “Which is a good thing,” I remind him again. “And it’s the main reason why you’re not hunted by my zombie trackers.” “I know that…. But being the only zombie who doesn’t want to kill for brains all the time can get…” He shifts uncomfortably. “Well, like I said, lonely.” Interesting. A zombie who wants a friend. Who would’ve thought? Then again, I did create him a bit differently than the average zombie, making him faster, stronger, and wiser, so I guess it’s not completely crazy that he wants a friend. “Did you know the favor I’m asking from you has to do with a girl?” I tell him, leaning forward in my chair. “Yeah, so? I see girls all the time, but it’s not like I can get close to them. Well, not without scaring the shit out of them.” A sad longing flashes across his expression. “This girl isn’t a normal girl,” I explain. “Her name is Ava Mikiley and she’s currently cursed to a painful demise that will happen on her eighteenth birthday. But you’re going to bring her here so that I can make her like you. She’ll be strong, fast, and have enough intelligence that she shouldn’t want to go around, killing everyone.” At least that’s the plan. But since Ava is cursed, I’m concerned she may not be as easy to control as August, which is why I need him to stick around and help me train her. I haven’t figured out how to ask him that, though. Perhaps he might get excited by having another one of his kind? If he is right now, he isn’t showing it. “So, I’m just supposed to, what? Bring this girl here so you can change her into a

zombie?” He shakes his head. “I don’t want to be part of ruining some girl’s life.” “If you don’t bring her here, then she’s doomed to become like all those other zombies you despise. The only way to save her from that future is to make her like you.” I cross my arms on top of my desk. “If you help me, after tonight, you won’t be the only one of your kind. But I can’t do it without your help.” It’s true, too. Since zombie bites are infectious, I can’t risk letting anyone else help Ava with her transition. I need August to help me or else I won’t have my superhero zombie. And I need my zombie just like I needed my maddening and reaper. “What are you going to do with her?” he asks. “After you make her like me, I mean.” “I want you to help her learn how to control her power, so she can help save the world.” “Save the world from what?” “From a paranormal portal that’s about to open.” I don’t bother mentioning that two other portals are opening as well, since I still haven’t figured out where those portals lead to. He shows zero shock, but that’s a zombie for you. Normally, I’m unbothered by August’s lack of emotion, but today he’s driving me crazy. I can’t tell what he’s thinking, if he’s actually considering helping me or just toying with me. “Fine, I’ll do it,” he finally agrees, lowering his foot back to the floor. “Good, I’m glad to have you on my team.” I lean over my desk and offer him my hand to shake. He eyeballs my hand warily before placing his cold, dead fingers in mine. After we shake hands and I give him the information on Ava, I send him on his way. Then I move onto my next problem—tracking down a cyborg to spy on my colleague who I’m fairly sure is keeping information about the portals from me. I don’t know why he’s withholding info from me or what the info is, but it makes

me extremely nervous. He also knows about my superhero experiment and I fear perhaps his secretiveness has to do with that. The last thing I need is for someone to mess around with my potential superheroes. Potential paranormal superheroes. No, I need to have a cyborg spy on him and find out what he’s up to. I just wish the cyborg didn’t live by the wall, a place where only wild cyborgs live. But as of right now, he’s my only option. “I guess I’m going to the wall.” I push to my feet, grab a voltage gun from my weapons case, and step out into the hallway. I don’t head for the exit doors, though, instead making a right toward the training corridors. I’m not going on this mission alone. Why would I when I have a reaper and maddening who needs some real-life experience training? I cross my fingers that they’re trained well enough to step out into the real world.

Chapter 2 Remi

“I ’m so hungry,” I gripe, my hands trembling at my sides. “Please, can you just give me one taste. Then I swear I’ll stop bugging you.” Cameron, my trainer, shakes his head. “Nope. No tastes until you’ve finished your training for the day.” My lip twitches and he grins, completely pleased by my misery. But what can I expect? He is a reaper after all. And not just any reaper, but the freakin’ Grim Reaper, aka the big boss downstairs that gives orders to all the other reapers. So, if your soul is currently getting collected by some dude or chick wearing a cloak and carrying a scythe, Cameron is the one that’s sentenced you to your soulless demise. “You’re doing this on purpose.” I put my hands on my hips and glare at him. “Doing what?” he asks innocently, his boots soundlessly touching the floor as he floats a circle around me. I cross my arms. “Starving me.” “Now why would I do that?” he taunts, flicking a strand of my long, brown hair as he zips around me. I grimace as my gaze attempts to keep up with his rapid movements. “Because you’re the Grim Reaper and you’re evil.” “Hate to break it to you, princess, but my blood runs through your veins.” He moves up behind me and his breath dusts against my earlobe. “So if I’m evil then so are you.” By the time I whirl around, he’s vanished. Dammit! How can I ever beat him, if I

can’t even see him! “I’m only half reaper,” I remind him, turning in a slow circle, my gaze skimming the ceiling beams and steel walls of the training room. “Therefore, I’m not evil.” “Half reaper or full, you still have reaper blood in your veins. And reaper blood is categorized on the darker spectrum of paranormal creatures. And for a good reason.” His voice echoes around me, making it nearly impossible to locate him. “We’re not known for our niceness.” I curl my fingers into fists, frustrated that I can’t spot him anywhere. “I’m not evil. I haven’t even hurt anyone.” “Yet,” he stresses. “But you’ve also been kept locked up behind these steel walls for all of your reaper life.” True. I haven’t left the facility since I was brought here a few weeks ago. The seclusion has been driving me mad, and I also worry what will happen when I finally endeavor into the real world, which will happen, at least according to Leader. But I’ll go into the world as a superhero. That is, if I decide to be one. I haven’t officially said yes yet, for many different reasons. One being that I’m constantly hungry for souls and seeing past that hunger is virtually impossible. But things will get better. At least, that’s what Leader told me during the brief speech he gave me about my training. “All of my reaper life?” I tell Cameron. “You make me sound ancient when I’ve only been a reaper for a few weeks.” “Exactly, which means you haven’t had enough time yet to fully learn all of your cravings, urges, powers, strengths, and weaknesses.” “What weakness?” Deciding to try another tactic to spot him, I hold still. “I feel stronger than I ever have.” The room grows soundless, except for the humming of the air vent and the pounding of my heart. Without moving, I allow my gaze to rove the ceiling, the walls, the door, and the mat area, searching for a sign of an evil, gross, reaper lurking about. Okay, okay, I may have lied about the gross part. Sure, photos may show the Grim Reaper as a cloaked, bony creature with glowing eyes who

carries a scythe. But Cameron doesn’t look like that at all. Blonde, tall, lean, with gauges in his ears, silver metal in his lip, and a tiny scar on his jawline, he’s utterly gorgeous. I’ll never it that aloud, though, since the last thing I need is for the Grim Reaper, who is extremely cocky and self-centered, to know I think he’s hot. “Exactly, which is one of your weaknesses.” Cameron materializes in front of me, so close the tip of our boots clip. “You think you know everything, princess, but you don’t.” I trip back, putting space between us. “I know enough. And I thought I told you to stop calling me that.” “Calling you what?” He feigns dumb, tapping his finger against his lips. I sigh audibly. “You know what.” “Sure thing, princess.” Gah! He’s driving me crazy! He reaches out and grazes his thumb across my jutted lip. “Reapers don’t pout.” “Well, this one does.” I jut out my lip further just to annoy him. He heaves a sigh of frustration, which twistedly pleases me. “Fine, if you’ll stop pouting, I’ll give you one taste. But then we’re focusing on you learning how to channel your reaper powers, got it?” I nod, excitement bursting in my chest. Because it’s feeeeddding time! “Got it.” He momentarily searches my eyes, for what I’m unsure, then takes my hand and guides me to the corner of the room. After he untangles our fingers, he lines my back to the wall and places his hands beside my head, pinning me between his arms. “I don’t know why you insist on feeding me this way.” I cringe at the hint of excitement in my tone. “It’s just as easy to feed me in the middle of the room where I’m not trapped against your body.”

“But it’s definitely not as much fun.” The corners of his lips pull to an arrogant smirk. “And even if you won’t agree with me, I know you secretly like doing it this way.” “No, I don’t,” I lie, because I do. I really, really do. “Liar.” Then he dips his head and nips at my lips. The briefest taste of souls kisses at the tip of my tongue, but then fades as he moves back. “Stop teasing me,” I complain breathlessly, my eyes rolling into the back of my head as a drop of souls trickles down my throat. “Not until you it it.” I shake my head. “Never.” “Fine then.” He starts to push away, taking all of his wonderful, tasty souls with him. Back when I was normal, I never would’ve begged a guy for anything. In fact, I had a lot of control over guys, due to a power I didn’t know I possessed. Sometimes I used this power for good, like with Ian, a guy I used to go to school with who slipped drugs into girls’ drinks so he could do awful things to them. After I found out about what he was doing, I made him dance for forty-eight hours straight. When I finally get access out of here, I fully plan on making him pay even more. My initial plan was to make a phone call to the police and divulge where Ian hides his drugs, but I figure what’s the point of having reaper power if I can’t use it for the greater good? But then there was Max. While I never meant to use my controlling power on Max, I accidentally did. It’s an accident I’ll never be able to forgive myself for. I swallow hard at the thought of Max. “Tell me what you’re thinking about?” Cameron whispers into my ear. “That I’m hungry,” I lie. “And that you’re the only thing stopping me from getting what I want.” Then I grab the front of his T-shirt, yank him toward me,

and seal my lips to his. He starts to pull away, but when a pleading whimper flees my lips, he caves. “God, you’re such a pain in my ass,” he whispers before his tongue tangles with mine. “I’m sorry, but I’m just so hungry,” I murmur then kiss him back, nearly devouring him. The wonderful taste of delicious, intoxicating souls melts against my taste buds and pours fuel and energy through my veins. My legs grow weak from the energy overload and I loop my arms around him to keep from collapsing to the floor. He moves back, but leaves a sliver of an inch between our mouths. “I’m not just supposed to give you what you want. It’s terrible training on my part, and you’re going to end up turning into a spoiled reaper.” My chest heaves as I pant for air, desperate for his lips to be against mine— desperate for more souls. “Is that a bad thing?” “I don’t know,” he says. “I’ve never met one before.” “Oh.” I trace my fingers up and down the nape of his neck. “Well, maybe it’s a good thing.” He arches a brow in doubt. “That you’re spoiled?” I nod. “It means I’m taken care of, which means I’m strong, right? Which will only help me when I have to fight off the creatures that exit the portal. So, that means you should only spoil me more, right?” I push gently on the back of his neck, urging him to come closer. “Your logic is ridiculous and makes absolutely no sense.” He sighs. “But, I’ll continue feeding you. After we’re done, though, and you have a clear head, we’re going to sit down and talk before we finish training for the day.” I nod, barely hearing him, then guide his lips to mine. I let out a hungry moan mixed with a content sigh when he doesn’t pull away. Our tongues entwine as he

kisses me deeply—feeds me what I crave the most. Halfway through the feeding, my legs snake around his waist again. He groans, grinding against me. Then the slow kisses quickly turn reckless, his hands traveling up and down my body as he rocks against me again. I want more—need more. But deep down, way, way in the back of my mind, a voice screams that what I’m doing is wrong. That kissing the grim reaper is wrong. That I’m wrong. An abomination. That I don’t deserve souls. The voice continues to grow louder the longer we continue, until finally I break the connection between our lips, my head pulsating with pain. Gasping for air, my overly fed body sags against the wall. Cameron holds onto me, refusing to let me lower my feet to the floor. “What’s wrong?” he asks, watching me intently. “What do you mean?” I ask, my voice sounding far away. “I mean, why did you stop the feeding session?” “Did I?” I sigh, my body swaying as souls swim around inside my chest. God, how can something so bad feel this good… “Remi, don’t play dumb with me. I know something’s wrong because there’s no way you’d ever stop a feeding session.” He tucks a strand of my hair behind my ear, his lips quirking. “You’re too greedy.” Don’t tell him, the voice whispers. If you do, you’ll end up staying locked up here forever I don’t know who the voice belongs to, but his words could possibly be true. While I’ve been at the facility for over three weeks now, I hardly know anything about this place. I’ve met Leader a total of four times and he spoke more to Cameron than to me. And the entire time I’ve been here, I’ve either been locked up in the training room or what I now call my bedroom. “I’m just full,” I lie again, untangling my legs from his waist. I move to step around him, but his hands find my waist and he holds me in place, trapping my body between him and the wall. The of his body, while cold, somehow sends a strange warmth glistening over my skin.

“You’re the worst liar I’ve ever met, which is going to make for a terrible reaper,” he breathes hotly against my ear. “So, if you’re going to lie, you better start doing a better job.” “Is that our training lesson for the day?” My tone is surprisingly steady. “Or is this just another one of your reaper advice sessions that will lead to you trying to talk me out of this whole superhero business?” “I never tried to talk you out of it. I just merely pointed out that there’s other alternatives.” “Like being your reaper queen?” “You say that like it’s the worst thing in the world.” “Anything that requires having to live in the underworld for all of time and eternity is awful,” I tell him. “Besides, I highly doubt you’d enjoy me being your queen. You’ve barely been able to stand being around me for the last few weeks.” “You may drive me crazy, but that doesn’t mean I’ve completely loathed the last few weeks. In fact, there’s been quite a few unexpected perks to this job.” He nudges my knees apart and grinds his hips against mine. My eyes involuntarily roll into the back of my head and a groan escapes my lips. “What’re you doing to me?” “What you want me to do.” His teeth graze my neck. Another embarrassing groan leaves my lips. “I do—” Someone clears their throat, cutting off either my protest or agreement—I’m really not sure what I was going to say. Cameron and I break apart and turn to face Leader, who’s standing in the doorway of the training room, eyeballing us with curiosity mixed with a bit of worry. From what I can tell, Leader is human, but he has an interesting look to him with white hair highlighted with a streak of blue. He also has strange markings on the

backs of his hands that Cameron told me weren’t tattoos, but never explained further. And normally, Leader is dressed very professionally, but today he’s wearing a black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, cargo pants, along with combat boots. From his casual clothes, I immediately sense something is up. Apparently, so does Cameron, because he says, “Why do you look like you’re about to go zombie hunting?” “Wait? There’s zombies?” I ask worriedly. When Cameron shoots me a seriously look, I realize how stupid I am for being afraid of the undead. “Sorry. It just surprised me.” “Why?” Cameron asks, stuffing his hands into the back pockets of his black jeans. “You’ve already been told that there’s a maddening in the building, along with another maddening that has jinn bloodlines. So, why do zombies existing shock you?” I shrug. “I was just as surprised when you told me about the maddening.” Truthfully, I’d never even heard the term maddening until Cameron explained they’re creatures that can drive someone to insanity simply with a touch. And while I felt a drop of fear, I was—still am—curious to see what one looks like. “Is there one here?” I ask curiously, my gaze wandering toward the door where Leader stands. “A zombie, I mean.” Leader glances between Cameron and I with the smallest ounce of concern in his expression. That’s strange. Why would he be concerned? Because he wants you all for himself. An image of bright red eyes flickers through my mind. Trust me. I tense. Where have I seen those red eyes before? My thoughts drift back to when the person—or thing—came to collect the curse from me. I barely anything about that night, other than throwing up at a party then being in tremendous pain. Then I woke up here in the facility with Leader telling me he saved me from death, that I was now a Reaper, and that

Cameron was going to train me to become a superhero. I also learned that my parents were the reason why I was cursed. I’ve begged them to give more details about why my parents would curse me, but Leader told me I’d only learn the truth when he knows I can handle it, which apparently, he doesn’t think I’m capable of right now. He might be onto something, too, since every time I think of my parents cursing me, I want to break through the wall, track them down, and steal their souls. Which is exactly what I’ll do to the person—or thing—that collected my curse that day and brought me so much pain. One day, I’ll get my revenge. “Even if there was a zombie here, I wouldn’t let you see it,” Cameron says, tugging me out of my dark, revengeful thoughts. “Zombie bites are contagious.” “Since when do you get to tell me what to do?” I quip, raising my brows. He gives me a look that makes my hunger rumble to life. Then he inches toward me, lowering his voice. “Since the day I created you.” He moves my hair away from my shoulder, dips his head, and drags his teeth along my earlobe. “Whether you like it or not, princess, I own you.” “You do not.” But my fluttering eyelashes and shuddering body suggest otherwise. Cameron pulls away, grinning, and I open my mouth to say some not-so-nice words. But Leader interrupts the moment. “Remi, I think it’s time for you to get some real world training.” He crosses the room toward us, taking cautious steps. “Without Cameron present.” Cameron’s lips part, and I’m assuming he’s about to protest, but Leader talks over him. “I need to see how she does without you around. Because, when it all comes down to it, you won’t be with her for the battle.” “She’s not ready,” Cameron grits out, his hands balled into fists. “She can barely get through a training session without needing to be fed.” “I think that’s because you’re feeding her too easily.” Leader gives Cameron a pressing look. “In fact, I think both of you could use a break from the feeding sessions.”

Cameron stares Leader down, his eyes blackening. “I’m not sure what you’re implying, but I think I should remind you who you’re speaking to and what I’m capable of.” “I’m completely aware of what the Grim Reaper is capable of,” Leader says calmly, taking another step toward us. “And I’m not trying to insult you. I’m just trying to explain that in order for Remi to become a superhero, she needs to learn not to be so dependent on you.” “Fine, if that’s what you want then that’s what you’ll get,” Cameron growls out. Then poof, he disappears in a cloud of hazy smoke. “Where’d he go?” I ask, attempting not to panic. But Cameron has been with me since day one. Not to mention he’s my food source! What happens if I get hungry while Leader and I are out? I swallow hard, knowing exactly what will happen. “Probably to the Underworld,” Leader explains, daring another step toward me. “Don’t worry, after he gets over his tantrum, he’ll come back.” I stare at the place where Cameron stood moments ago, my chest aching with a strange emptiness. “How can you be so sure he will?” “Because you’re here.” What in the crazy reapers does that mean? Before I can ask, he turns and whisks toward the door, motioning for me to follow. “Now come on. We don’t have a lot of time.” I rush after him, my boots thudding against the floor. “Where are we going exactly?” He casts a quick glance over his shoulder. “To meet Heartley, the maddening. And then we’re going into the city to track down a cyborg.” “Oh.” I don’t know which is worse, my partner possessing the ability to drive me to the brink of insanity, or that fact that I have to go into the city with reaper blood in my system.

“Don’t worry, you’ll do great.” Leader gives me a soft pat on the arm and an enthusiastic smile. “If I didn’t think so, then I wouldn’t let you out.” I may have believed him if the voice in my mind didn’t whisper ominous warnings. Don’t trust him. If you do, your life will only end in tragedy. You’re not ready. You’ll never be. End in tragedy? Hasn’t my life already ended? I think to myself. My parents cursed me and now I’m a reaper. What could be more tragic than that? The voice laughs. Oh Remi, is that what you believe? Because there’s so much more to what happened to you. So, so much more.

Chapter 3 Ava

I’m in over my head. Way, way over my head. But I can’t back out. At least, according to my grandma. “No matter what happens, don’t back out, Ava,” she said before I left the house. “If you back out then we will get kicked out. And if we get kicked out then you, me, and Larry are all gonna end up living on the streets.” Like I really give a shit if Larry, my grandma’s on and off again boyfriend, ends up homeless. The guy is a straight up asshole, always has been since my grandma brought him into our lives years ago. When I was a child, he constantly yelled at me, even for things that weren’t my fault. His beer was warm. The house was too dusty. The neighbors were bugging him. I don’t know how he convinced himself that those things were somehow being caused by me. The only explanation he ever gave me was, “You’re the devil’s child—cursed—and one day you’re gonna find that out.” When I asked him what he meant, he told me to ask my grandma. So I did. My grandma insisted Larry was drunk and just babbling nonsense and while she seemed a bit squirrely, I chose to believe her. I mean, what other choice did I have? She’s the only family I have left, has been since the day my parents died in a car accident. Sure, she wasn’t always the best grandma ever, like the time she forgot me at the park or the carnival or the grocery store. But at least she took me to those places with her. Although, sometimes I wondered if she wished I wasn’t around, since she was always forgetting me. Sometimes I wished for a better life, one where I was ed. That was when I was younger, though. Now I’ve realized wishing is ridiculous. That it doesn’t matter if I’m ed. In fact, being forgotten can come in handy sometimes. Like, right now. In exactly one hour, I’ll be eighteen, an official adult. But once again, my grandma forgot it’s my birthday. I’m glad, though. Because if she had ed then I’d be at home, listening to her explain that she didn’t get me any presents or cake, but we could hang out and watch television together, just like we’ve done for every other one of my birthdays. Which would be fine

except Larry would probably be there, and for the last few years or so, Larry has gotten too handsy with me. “You’re a pretty lookin’ girl,” he told me one day when I was about fifteen. Then he tried to cop a feel. It was the first and last time I ever wore a dress. And the day I went from not liking Larry to utterly fucking hating him. When I told my grandma about the incident, she dismissed me, calling me a liar. “I went through too much to get Larry,” she said. “He’d never do something like that to me.” “What do you mean you went through too much to get Larry?” I questioned. “I thought he hit on you in a bar and you guys fell madly in love within minutes.” I’d mentally rolled my eyes at the last part; always did whenever I heard their love story that I never fully believed. Her eyes briefly widened but then she collected herself. “Go clean your room, Ava, and do your homework or whatever the hell kids your age are supposed to be doing.” My heart hurt that she was dismissing what Larry did to me, but I was pissed off too. “What’re you going to do about Larry?” She narrowed her eyes at me. “I think the real question is what am I gonna do with you? Because I can’t have another woman seducing my man.” I gritted my teeth. “I didn’t seduce him.” She eyed me over. “Oh yeah, then why are you wearing that short dress?” The dress went to my knees, so I didn’t understand what the hell she was talking about. It didn’t really matter, though. “What I’m wearing has nothing to do with what happened. No guy should ever touch a girl without her permission and he didn’t have my permission.” She rolled her eyes. “Sure he didn’t.” Fuming and hurt more than I’ll ever it, I turned and stomped toward my room.

“And Ava,” she called out. “If I ever hear about anything happening between Larry and you again, you won’t be welcome in my house anymore, got it?” “Got it,” I gritted out. It was the last time I openly spoke with my grandma. From then on, I avoided her at all costs and it felt like she did the same with me. I also avoided being in the house as much as I could, crashing on couches or park benches. But sometimes I had to go home, and whenever I did, Larry was there, waiting to remind me that my grandma cared more about him than me. Which made him think he owned me. One day, I’m going to make both of them pay, I think to myself as I weave my way through the crowded bar I entered using my fake ID. I try not to touch as many people as possible—because I fucking hate being touched—as I make my way to the back doors. Once I’m outside, my grandma gave me specific instructions on what to do next. First, a guy is going to wander down the alleyway to make a drug drop near the far back dumpster. He’ll leave the drugs underneath a crate. I’ll have exactly one minute to grab the drugs and get the hell out of dodge before the person who bought the drugs shows up. So, yeah, basically I’m about to steal from a drug dealer, which yes, I know, isn’t very smart. But not only did my grandma threaten me with all three of us being homeless if I didn’t do this, but she also said she’d get rid of everything I owned, including the few photos I have of my parents. That was what really did me over. So, here I am about to rob a drug dealer. It’s not the first time I’ve stolen or anything, but definitely the first time I’ve stolen from this sketchy of a person. I sigh as I reach the back door of the bar. One day I’m going to say goodbye to this shitty life and take off. Then my grandma and Larry won’t have me around to get money for them after they’ve spent all of their finances on drugs, whores, strip clubs—the list is endless. I crack the door open and peer outside, checking that no one is around. Once I’m positive the coast is clear, I slip out the door and step outside underneath the starry night sky. The air is a bit chilly so I pull my leather jacket tighter around me before hurrying toward the dumpsters. Puddles splash underneath my clunky

boots and the chains hooked to my black skinny jeans jingle as I quicken my pace to a jog. When I hear the sound of a voice, I jump behind the nearest dumpster and crouch down in the shadows. Then I hold my breath and freakin’ hope to hell I don’t get caught. My heart is thudding in my chest as someone approaches the other side of the dumpster I’m hiding behind. Whoever they are, is taking loud, calculated steps. Seriously, what’re they doing? Auditioning for the marching band? As the footsteps grow louder, my nerves double. What happens if they saw me sneak back here? What happens if I get caught? My grandma said not to back out no matter what and I rarely do, but how can I not back out if the drug dealer straight up figures out what I’m up to? Then again, he might kill me and then I won’t have to make the choice. Wouldn’t that be a way to go? Dying behind a dumpster, beside rotting garbage and what I’m pretty sure is a dead cat… Ew! I inch away from the dead cat and pull the collar of my t-shirt over my nose. “I know you’re back there.” A male voice drifts from the other side of the dumpster. “So you might as well just come out.” I literally stop breathing. Shit! Shit! Shit! “Or I can just come back there,” the guy suggests, sounding kind of bored. “If that’s what you prefer.” Dammit, I’m so screwed! I rack my brain for a good lie as I push to my feet and inch out from behind the dumpster. What waits for me on the other side, though, isn’t what I was expecting. “You’re not the drug dealer.” I say, eyeing over the guy in front of me. Or well, I think he’s a guy. He’s definitely male, tall, lean, with blonde hair that hangs in his eyes. But underneath the moonlight, his eyes look silver. And his lips are black… perhaps from lipstick? He does have the whole Goth vibe going, dressed in clunky boots, black jeans, a black fitted t-shirt, topped with a black

vest embellished with silver chains. But none of that explains why his blood veins show clearly through his pale skin… What the hell? I blink and blink again, wondering if I accidentally inhaled too much secondhand smoke before I left the house. Larry and my grandma were toking it up pretty hard. Then again, this isn’t the first time I’ve seen things that weren’t real. Sometimes, when I’m really tired and sleep deprived, I think I see my parents’ ghosts. My grandma told me I was probably just bat shit crazy, like my mom, who apparently claimed she saw ghosts too. I frown. “I’m seeing things again, aren’t I?” I scratch my head. “Although, you don’t look like a ghost.” The corner of his black lips quirk, but he never quite fully smiles. “That’s because I’m not.” I cross my arms, my guard up. “Then what are you?” He stares at me undecidedly for a beat or two. “A zombie.”

Chapter 4 Ava

Istart to bust up laughing until I note the seriousness in his expression. Well, seriousness might be a stretch. More like expressionless, like a blank canvas. “A zombie?” I repeat, staring at him blankly. Then it clicks. “Oh, I get it. You’re tripping on something.” His brows knit. “No, I’m not.” “Yeah, you are.” I pat his arm. “It’s okay. My grandma goes on bad trips all the time. She even thought she was a fairy one time. It took me two hours to convince her that she needed to stop trying to spit fairy dust in my face—which, FYI was just spit. Eventually, the drugs faded out of her system and she was fine.” He stares at his shoulder where I patted him then lifts his gaze to me. “I’m not high. I’m being serious. I’m a zombie and I’m here to save you.” Great. This is worse than I thought. Either this guy is high as a motherfucker or he’s a complete nutjob. “Thanks for the offer,” I say, backing away from him. “But I promise you I don’t need saving.” “Yes, you do.” He matches my step, eyeing me over with a strange look in his eyes. “You’re cursed. And soon that curse will be collected.” I fleetingly pause. Larry has said something similar to me before. Am I cursed? Then I shake my head. Seriously, Ava, you think you’re cursed because your grandma’s perverted boyfriend and a guy who thinks he’s a zombie said you were? Yeah, I definitely think I got high on secondhand smoke.

“Look, thanks for the offer to help me,” I tell Zombie Guy. “But I promise you I’ll be okay. Just as long as you take off, because I’ve got some business to attend to and if you’re around and I get caught, you’ll probably get your ass kicked. Or worse. And I’d rather that not happen.” A crease forms between his brows. “You’re worried I’ll get hurt?” “Yes, so please, just get the hell out of here.” I try to shoo him away. But his feet remain planted to the asphalt, the crease between his brow deepening. “You’re trying to help me?” I let out a frustrated groan. “I am, but if you keep doing this weird, shocked, noone-could-possibly-want-to-help-me thing, I’m going to bail out and let you fend for yourself.” I put my hands on my hips as he continues to stare at me like a confused puppy. “Seriously, dude, what is with the lost, confused puppy act?” “I’m not sure what you mean?” I roll my eyes. “Sure you don’t. I bet that’s what you tell every girl who falls for the look, right?” He shakes his head, sending strands of his hair into his freakishly gorgeous eyes. “No, there are no girls who fall for the look.” “Okay, well, then guys.” “No guys either.” I grimace, growing more on edge. “You know what, it doesn’t really matter, just as long as you leave. Now.” I begin to push him in the direction of the road, but freeze when I hear someone coming down the alleyway. “Shit.” Panicking, I snag Zombie Guy’s sleeve and tug him with me as I duck behind the dumpster. “What are you doing?” Zombie guy asks as I crouch down and pull him with me. I cover his mouth with my hand. “Shhh… Just be quiet for a minute, okay?” Surprisingly, he nods.

Well, he may be crazy but at least he listens. I hold my breath as footsteps approach the other side of the dumpster. My heart is pounding in my chest and I still have my hand over Zombie Guy’s mouth. I can’t feel the warmth of his breath, which is strange. But what makes the situation even more bizarre is when he places a kiss on my palm. My gaze snaps toward him and I blast him with a what the hell look. His lips move against my palm as he whispers, “You smell good.” I put my finger to my lips and scowl at him, indicating for him to shut the hell up. Although, deep down, my heart does a stupid little flutter from his compliment. Doesn’t matter, though. It’s not like I’m going to hook up with him or anything. I mean, sure the guy is hot, but he also thinks he’s a zombie. Plus, I don’t do hookups or dating or kissing or anything else like that. And I won’t. I promised myself a long time ago that I wouldn’t get involved with anyone. And I’m sticking to my promise no matter what. Besides, hating to be touched by other people kind of complicates getting close to anyone. I try my best to ignore Zombie Guy, lowering my hand from his mouth. Then I listen for signs that whoever entered the alleyway is still there. But it’s hard to concentrate with Zombie Guy staring at me. He watches me intently before inching closer and tilting his head to the side. Then he reaches for me and plays with the strands of my long, brown hair for a bit. I want to tell him to back the hell off, but I’m too nervous to speak. My nerves only skyrocket when he dips his head toward me and licks a slow path up my neck. “You taste good too,” he whispers then licks me again. What the shit is happening? And why am I not stopping it? Not only am I not stopping it, but I shudder. Actually freakin’ shudder. By the time he moves away, my heart is a clusterfuck of a wreck inside my chest. “You’re going to be okay,” Zombie Guy says to me, trailing his finger across my hairline. “I won’t let anyone do anything to you—you’re too nice.”

“No, I’m not,” I whisper. “Trust me.” “But you are.” His finger skims my jawline and he tracks the movement with his gaze, seeming mesmerized. “I don’t care what Leader says. We don’t need another one of me running around. I’m going to save you from this.” My lips part to ask him what he means, but the dumpster goes sailing across the alleyway and crashes into the building. Garbage flies everywhere, causing the air to reek of spoiled milk and rotten eggs. I spring to my feet, preparing to run like hell. I pull Zombie Guy up with me too, not wanting to leave him behind. Sure, the guy is straight up crazy, in a sweet way sort of. But he doesn’t deserve to get into trouble for something I was about to do. But what I see standing in the center of the alleyway makes me slam to a halt. Because it isn’t the drug dealer. It’s… I blink. “Mom….”

Chapter 5 Ava

My mom smiles at me, sticking out her hand. I start to walk toward her, but Zombie Guy clutches onto my hand, holding me back. “Don’t. It’s a trap,” he warns, stepping up beside me in a protective move. I dither, glancing from him to my mom, unsure what to believe. On the one hand, the guy next to me declared he was a zombie and that he needed to save me from being cursed. But on the other hand, my mom has been dead for years, so… Ding, dong, ding, dong, ding, dong. The town clock chimes twelve, announcing the next day has arrived. My mom smiles. “Happy birthday, Ava.” My heart warms in my chest until her face starts to melt like candle wax, dripping down her body and pooling around her bare feet. My body glazes with a deathly chill, goosebumps sprouting across my arms. “Run.” Zombie Guy tugs on my arm as he takes off running down the alleyway toward the street. I run with him, clutching onto his hand, my heart thrashing in my chest. My mind is racing a million miles a minute, questions flooding my brain. Who was that? What was that? But most of all… “That wasn’t my mom,” I whisper, my heart feeling as though it’s splitting in two. For the briefest moment I thought she was alive, that somehow she’d come back from the dead. But I should’ve known that wasn’t possible. People don’t just come back from the dead, do they?

“No, that wasn’t your mom.” Zombie Guy quickens his pace as we near the end of the alleyway. “Then what was it?” I talk loudly over the hammering of our footsteps. He peers over his shoulder at me and for a split second, I swear I see fear in his eyes. “It was—” He grinds to a sudden stop as a figure materializes in front of us, blocking the end of the alley and our only exit. I squint through the darkness, trying to see who the person is. Since they have a hood pulled over the top of their head, all I can make out is that they’re freakishly tall with broad shoulders and gleaming red eyes. What the shit? Red eyes… I blink several times, trying to erase the hallucination away, but nothing changes. So either I’ve lost my damn mind and I’m not coming back from crazyville, or this shit is really happening. “Fuck,” Zombie guy curses, then flips a bitch, towing me with him. But again, he screeches to a stop as the figure with red eyes appears in front of us again. Zombie guy whirls around, but again the figure is there. Over and over again, the same thing happens until finally we’re backed into a corner. Zombie Guy refuses to let go of my hand, moving me closer to him. The figure stands in front of us, eyeing me over with his glowing red eyes. “Ava, it’s so nice to meet you. I’ve been waiting a long time to collect your curse.” “You won’t be collecting her curse,” Zombie Guy growls. “Not tonight. Not ever.” “And who’s going to stop me? You?” The figure takes a measured step toward Zombie Guy. “Besides, you couldn’t stop me even if you were able to. Your Leader needs Ava’s curse to be collected.” “Wait, what?” I eyeball the two of them, fear pulsating through my veins. “What’s going on?” “What’s going on is you’re about to give me what I’m owed.” The figure reaches

for me. But Zombie Guy smacks his hand away. “Don’t touch her.” Then he lets go of my hand and inches toward the figure. “Here’s what’s going to happen. Ava is going to walk out of here, alive, and everyone is going to leave her alone.” The figure laughs. “You think even if she walked away from this, she’d be left alone. Newsflash Dead Boy, no one has left Ava alone since she was fifteen.” It flicks a glance in my direction. “Isn’t that right, Ava?” My head is spinning. How does he know about that? How does he know my name? How does Zombie Guy know my name? I swallow down a shaky breath, my hands curling into fists. “Shut the fuck up.” “Or what?” it taunts, turning toward me. I stand my ground, even though I’m terrified. “Or your mouth is going to become really acquainted with my fist.” The figure’s eyes flash bright red. “I’d like to see you try.” I raise my fist. “Fine, then you will.” Zombie Guy captures my fist before I can throw down the punch. “Don’t touch him,” he warns, his gaze colliding with mine. “If you do then you’ll die.” A cold chill slithers down my spine and the figure howls with laughter. “So, you’re breaking orders?” it asks Zombie Guy amusedly. “Good, because I wasn’t going to let Leader take this over again. He may have stolen two of my cursed girls already, but he will not get a third. I will not let him win this thing going on between him and I.” His eyes flash so brightly I have to close my eyes. Zombie Guy yells something, but the noise is overtaken by a loud snap. Before I can even process what’s going on, my legs give out on me, and I collapse to the ground, unable to feel my body, my soul—feel anything.

For the wildest moment, I feel at peace. But then a wave of pain rolls over me. “I’m dying,” I croak out, darkness and pain surrounding me. “No, you’re not.” Zombie Guy’s voice echoes through the darkness. “I didn’t want it to go this way for you, Ava. I’m so sorry.” “For what…” I barely get the words out before a blinding hot pain scorches through my wrist, as if teeth have sunken into the flesh. Then the pain magnifies, flaring through my veins, my heart, my brain— everywhere. The last thing I hear is a scream tearing from my lips. Then everything goes still. As still as if I were dead.

Chapter 6 Leader

I’m just about to lead Remi to Heartley’s bedroom, so we can pick her up and head out on the cyborg mission when August comes rushing through the double doors of the emergency entrance. His eyes have never carried so much panic—so much emotion—as he looks around helplessly. When my gaze falls to what he’s carrying, I soon figure out why. Lying lifelessly in his arms is a girl with long brown hair and pale skin. Her eyes are shut, her chest isn’t moving, and her entire body is limp. At first glance, she appears dead. But upon closer observation, I notice her blood veins are becoming more defined and her lips are darkening. She’s transitioning into a zombie. But how? I haven’t even put August’s blood inside her yet. “What the hell happened?” I ask, rushing down the narrow hallway toward him. “The demon killed her,” he replies, his voice shaking with anger. “He didn’t try to collect her curse, like you said he would. He killed her and took off… I didn’t know what to do… She was dying so I…” He trails off, but I already know what he’s going to say. The answer is right there on Ava’s wrist. “You bit her.” I don’t know whether to be proud of him or upset. Yes, he wasn’t supposed to bite her, but he may have saved her and hopefully saved my plan also by thinking on his feet. “I’m sorry, but I didn’t know what to do.” He holds Ava closer to his chest and stares down at her. “She tried to save me too. Sure, I didn’t really need saving. But it was nice… Not to be completely hated.” Great. Maybe this is worse than I thought. Not only is Ava already turning into a zombie without me adding the elements that will make her more like August, but I think my first successful zombie experiment might be falling in love.

I need to fix this ASAP. “Here, bring her in here.” I push open a door to our right and signal for Remi to wait outside. She nods, but her eyes widen as her gaze wanders to Ava. Great. Now she’s going to start asking questions. Well, more than she already has. August rushes inside the small room and sets Ava down on the steel medical table. Then he sweeps her hair out of her eyes and cups his palm to her cheek. “She looks like she’s sleeping.” “Well, she’s not.” I roll up my sleeves and begin booting up monitors. “She’s hovering somewhere between life and death right now. And either we can let her fully die and she’ll turn into one of those brain crazed zombies you hate so much. Or I can try to bring her back and make her like you. But I’m not sure how well that will work since you bite her first.” “You’re going to at least try to save her, right?” August says—pleads. I waver, unsure what to do. While I think I can save her, I’m not sure how well of a superhero Ava will make without the demon having collected her curse. And eventually, if she remains alive—well, as alive as a zombie is—it’ll come back to collect the curse. But just letting her turn into a brain crazed monster doesn’t feel right. “I’m going to try to save her,” I tell him as I collect a syringe from a drawer. “But while I do, I need you to do me a favor and take Remi and Heartley to the wall to recruit a cyborg.” August gives a firm shake of his head. “I want to stay here until she wakes up.” “This is going to take a while.” I open the glass fridge to grab a few vials. “And I need you to do this for me. It’s important.” “But you might need my help,” he says, refusing to take his gaze off Ava. Without warning, I shove a needle into August’s arm. The needle piercing his skin barely fazes him and he allows me to draw his blood while watching Ava. Once I’ve collected enough blood, I remove the needle from his arm.

“That’s the only thing you’ll be able to do to help Ava.” I motion for him to leave the room. “Now please, August, take the girls and head to the wall to recruit the cyborg. I need that cyborg or else the world could be doomed.” I move toward the side of the bed with the syringe and vials in my hand. “Since I won’t be there to help control Heartley, you should take Caspian with you. I’d suggest taking Cameron to help control Remi, but he’s currently having a tantrum in the underworld, so you’ll just have to keep an eye on her.” August appears torn as he tears his eyes off Ava. “I’ll go, but only if you promise me you’ll save her.” I loathe making those sorts of promises, but needing him to collect my cyborg for me, I nod. “All right, I promise.” I just hope that after I’m done saving Ava, her lack of emotion will help her put a stop to August’s developing obsession with her. Because I can’t have my superheroes falling in love and wanting to back out of the mission. Casting one last longing look at Ava, August begrudgingly strides for the door. But he pauses before he exits the room. “The demon said something strange to me about killing Ava so he could win something going on between you and him.” He glances at me. “What did he mean by that?” I fight the urge to swallow hard. “I have no idea.” The truth is, I know exactly what the demon was referring to. The battle that’s been going on between him and I since the day he failed at collecting my curse. I’m not about to it this aloud, though, or else August might start asking too many questions. And then my whole mission might end up under examination. He eyes me over with a drop of skepticism before shoving the door open and walking out of the room. I blow out a stressed breath then redirect my attention back to Ava. I make a mental note, though, to figure out what the demon is up to, since if it stops collecting curses then my future superheroes will never get created. And that means the team I planned to create will be no more. I need my entire team. The world’s fate depends on it.
