INSTRUMENT STORAGE DEVICE Parts of the main memory of a computer are volatile i.e. when the computer is switched off. Information in the memory is lost. Storage deices are therefore used to provide a more permanent backing stores. They do this by storing the information on a media such as magnetic tap or magnetic disc storage. Devices which use a laser beam to store information on video discs are also being developed. Each group of information stored in a backing store is referred as file. The use of storage devices allows an almost unlimited number of files to be stored. However, before a particular file can be used, it must be transferred to the main memory, otherwise it can’t be accessed. The time taken to find a file and transfer it from the backing store to the main memory is called the access time.
