Is obesity a disease? By Ivan Zambrano
I chose my topic because.. • Hello, my name is Ivan Zambrano. • It is important to understand how people become obese • Obesity has always been a worldwide issue that we have a lot of problems dealing with • Help people understand the importance of eating better and how to make a change • This is effecting people physically and emotionally
My Initial Point of View • I believe obesity is a disease and people should open their eyes • Obesity is only continuing to grow, especially in the United States. • Obesity can spread like wild fire from the generations in the family.
Continued… According to Dr. Patrice Harris, a member of the association‟s board, “Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue that affects approximately one in three Americans.”
What is obesity? • The condition of being grossly fat or overweight
• Medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems
My Assumptions • Obesity occurs when people do not engage in exercise • Non-healthy foods are always going to be cheaper than healthy foods • There are many risks in health issues for being ranked as „obese‟ • People stop caring what they look like because they feel they can not do anything to make a change
Evidence • Over 26% of Americans do not get enough exercise • The number of overweight and obese Americans has increased since 1960 • Today, 66.3 percent of adult Americans (about 200 million) are categorized as being overweight or obese • Since 1960, adult Americans have increased average heights by 1 inch and average weight by 25 pounds • In 1963 a ten year old boy weighed, on average, 74.2 pounds • Now the average boy weighs 85 pounds.
Disadvantage • Issue: Should obesity lead to creating health problems and become a disease? • Reason: Women who gain 20 pounds or more between age 20 and midlife double their risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. For every 2 pound weight increase, the risk of developing arthritis rises 9-13%. • Evidence: According to National Health and Nutrition, “Obesity is a preventable risk factor for other diseases and conditions, and is not a disease itself.” • Conclusion: Obesity is caused by many reasons for example, “hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome, arthritis, and depression.
Advantage • Issue: How is obesity good or okay? • Reason: People who have obesity have to wear their disease on the outside. • Evidence: According to Scott Kahan, MD, MPH, Director of the National Center for Weight and Wellsness and Preventative Medicine Physician at Johns Hopkins University, stated obesity "satisfies all the definitions and criteria of what a disease and medical condition is... The one difference is that people who have obesity have to wear their disease on the outside." • Conclusion: Obesity is common all around today and people are aware of it.
Different Points of View • Trying to lose weight can be unhealthy • It can cause an unbalanced diet • Easier to blame other people for our own obesity issues
What is the best counter argument and why don‟t I think it is as strong? • • • •
It is up to people to make the right choices for themselves Accepting responsibility for your own choices Obesity experts are funded by weight loss companies This argument is not as strong because evidence shows that obesity is unhealthy
How Reliable is my Source of Information? • The main source I used was credible because he was well educated and provided his own personal experience in the research topic • Scott Kahan, MD, MPH, Director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness and Preventative Medicine Physician at Johns Hopkins University • He is a physician trained in both clinical medicine and public health • He works as a public health physician specializing in nutrition and obesity policy • Center for Disease Control (CDC) • World Health Organization (WHO)
What is my.. Conclusion • Obesity must be controlled now before more people do become obese • This will cause more people to be effected by health risks
Solution • Address the individuals that struggle with obesity first
Recommendations • Encourage companies to make healthier food • Healthy foods shouldn‟t be more expensive than fatty foods
ANY QUESTIONS?? THANK YOU
