Comm. 1 B. the importance and significance of intellectual honesty Plagiarism is a very serious academic offense that deals with both the legal and ethical issues of using someone else’s work without proper citation or attribution (Librero L., 2010).As seen it is highly probable that most, if not all are not aware of committing such a crime. One may reason out that it is seemingly accepted because of the ignorance of most authorities to judge and condemn any ‘riskers’. However, despite this clear evidence of amorality among the public, one must consider that some still have the audacity of committing such a crime regardless of being aware of its provisions, thinking that everyone does it anyway, and it could not be avoided because of the open sources we could easily access nowadays. It is essential to note that even if the public consider these alibis as sufficient claims to back your reasons as to why plagiarism was committed, one must still consider the importance of the seemingly ill-used intellectual honesty. The capability and responsibility of anyone to adopt amongst them that ethical respect for the intangible property any other individual may have created should always be considered, thus the presence of R.A 8293 – The Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines. We are then guided by these provisions to act accordingly and ethically in the manners of studies and citations of credited authors of different sources. The presence of this Republic Act, however is greatly unnoticed by the majority therefore its significance to intellectual honesty is tarnished, hopefully, temporarily. As creators or s of our minds, we must understand that the presence of the Republic Act 8293 does not limit the supposed perception of how we must comprehend the importance of intellectual honesty. We are required to protect our own, be it intangible materials or not. ittedly, the protection of intellectual ideas or outputs is difficult to attain, we should stand by it. The public must be made aware of their rights as owners of these outputs. Another essential aspect might be the preserve the morality of the people. The students nowadays are unaware of the amorality of their actions and as Dr. Lex Librero
has stated, they unconsciously commit this crime. We must therefore inform the future generations as to what they might unwittingly become – plagiarists. Librero argues that once an individual commits plagiarism, and then faced with the positive outcomes of this crime, one has the tendency to repeat such act and result to being a plagiarist. Students undeniably are victims of such temptations of short cuts through the academic success. This might lead to the influence of other susceptible others to commit such a crime too. of the academe must learn the value of intellectual honesty so as to respect the rights of others. In conclusion, Plagiarism is a crime that is not commonly adhered to and usually ignored in the view that other laws are of greater importance. However, this is not true, the mere thought of stealing of materials, be it intangible or not, still deserve equal considerations. Despite of the importance of abiding by the law and such, we must consider the bigger ordeal of the consequences if plagiarism might not be heeded. The sense of morality and respect would then be tarnished in the view that since everyone must be doing so, especially promulgated by the media – Sotto’s case – then it is highly acceptable well in fact it is not. The sense of amorality or even immorality might grow deeper in depth and become indispensible that would lead the world on the verge of utmost intellectual honesty deprivation.
