Tenebra e mistero di un colore

Il colore giallo ha una strana influenza tra gli artisti alla fine dell'ottocento. Se qui si parla di un Re in Giallo che fa da titolo al libro di racconti, cui anche Il Segno Giallo appartiene e viene pubblicato nel 1895, The Yellow Book, libro giallo, è il nome di una rivista pubblicata a Londra tra il 1892 e il 1897 e patria tipografica del movimento decadente inglese, Aubrey Beardsley, Oscar Wilde e compagnia. Aveva una copertina di stoffa gialla, molto chic per l'epoca (anche oggi in verità); come giallo è il libro corruttore che Lord Henry manda a Dorian Gray, consolazione letteraria al suicidio del suo amore e poco velato riferimento a Controcorrente, cioè À rebours di Huysmans, uscito in Francia nel 1884. Perché gialli erano tutti i libri si di quel periodo di contenuto lascivo e illecito, per questo incartati in un involucro giallo. Come giallo sarà il colore delle buste di carta che nasconderanno le proibizioni all'alcool dei paesi puritani nei decenni a venire.

Yellow è un Kid buffo con indosso una camicia da notte, che sempre nel 1895 comincia ad apparire nei giornali di New York, un fumetto, una nuova forma d’arte popolare che prende avvio dalla stampa a colori separati. Pochi anni prima Vincent Van Gogh aveva scoperto il giallo industriale per i suoi girasoli e se ne era inebriato.

Giallo è dunque questo Re invisibile e terribile che abita Carcosa, luogo introvabile di spiagge desolate e stelle nere che ci guardano silenziose dal cielo immenso.

Niente di arcaico e tribale, però, niente misteri con un setting antico, qui siamo dentro una certa mondanità di costumi e di comportamenti, gente cosmopolita

che abita le metropoli. Il colore giallo arriva come richiamo lontano e indefinito di corruzione e disgregazione, trasgressione e perdita di senso, dove invece il senso e la ragione si presuppone siano di casa.

Giallo come luogo da non toccare, libro da non leggere, perché per chi lo apre, o peggio, lo legge, c’è in serbo un infausto destino.

Libri fantasma, libri inesistenti eppure libri famosissimi. Non a caso Lovecraft riprese da Chambers, autore prolifico di romanzi alla moda e di questa eccezione paurosa, molte suggestioni che il Re in Giallo sparge orridamente nei quattro racconti che lo nominano. Il Segno Giallo è l’ultimo e quello che porta la frase ricorrente, diventata famosa, e quello che ci mette sotto gli occhi il famoso segno, sapremo mai se lettera o cifra?, certo premonitore di oscure sciagure.

Il Segno Giallo è un viaggio squisitamente scritto e già predestinato in partenza, fin dall'apparire di uno strano essere che fa da filo conduttore a tutto il racconto e con lui si chiude, mentre la vita di un tranquillo e blasé pittore newyorkese viene capovolta e macchiata dal Re a Brandelli. Il regista Carl Theodor Dreyer, nel suo film Vampyr - Il vampiro del 1932, à lo stesso escamotage terribile del sogno qui presente e destinato al suo protagonista.

Sono orrori decadenti, fini e terribili come capelli di strega, ubriachi di champagne e serate a teatro, ma anche orrori di strane solitudini e follia senza tempo né luogo, pazzia che nasconde magagne innominabili, brividi oscuri che portano ancora a cercare le stelle nere in cielo e ad avere paura del buio che non finisce mai.

Indubbiamente uno dei racconti più importanti della letteratura fantastica e orrorifica dell'800 e influenza imprescindibile e continuamente rinnovata per decine di scrittori fino ai giorni nostri. Ma attenzione, questa è la sorte sotto cui

lo stesso racconto è nato, osserviamo bene il gioco infinito dei rimandi, poiché esiste in virtù di un suo precedente, qui incluso, che è Un abitante di Carcosa di Ambrose Bierce, anch'egli seminale scrittore fantastico di poco precedente a Chambers.

Che il Re in Giallo e Carcosa siano ossessivamente presenti dappertutto, sussurrati di bocca in bocca, pronti ad apparire improvvisi nei nostri incubi e portarci in luoghi innominabili dove ci perderemo per sempre, nel ato o nel presente, quindi sinistramente anche nel futuro?

È forse questo l'unico mistero che ha dileguato la sua tenebra.

Ci sono così tante cose impossibili da spiegare! Perché certi accordi musicali dovrebbero farmi pensare alle tinte brune e dorate delle foglie autunnali? Perché la Messa di Sainte Cécile dovrebbe portare i miei pensieri a vagare tra caverne le cui pareti fiammeggiano con masse frastagliate di argento vergine? Cosa c'era nel rombo e nell'agitazione di Broadway delle sei che fece balenare davanti ai miei occhi l'immagine di una foresta bretone, immobile, dove la luce del sole filtrava attraverso il fogliame primaverile e Sylvia, piegata sopra una piccola lucertola verde, mormorava, con la voce a metà tra il tenero e la curiosità: “Pensare che anche questa è una creatura di Dio!”

Quando vidi per la prima volta il guardiano, la sua schiena era rivolta verso me. Lo guardai con indifferenza fino a che entrò in chiesa. Non feci attenzione a lui più di quanta ne avessi fatta a qualsiasi altro uomo che si trovava a Washington Square quella mattina, e quando chiusi la finestra e rientrai nel mio studio lo avevo dimenticato. Nel tardo pomeriggio, il giorno era piuttosto caldo, sollevai di nuovo la finestra e mi sporsi a prendere una boccata d’aria. L'uomo era in piedi nel sagrato della chiesa, e lo notai con lo stesso poco interesse con cui l’avevo notato quella mattina. Guardai attraverso la piazza, dove la fontana dava il suo spettacolo e poi, con la mente piena di vaghe impressioni di alberi, viali asfaltati, gruppi in movimento di bambinaie e villeggianti, ritornai al mio cavalletto. Come mi girai, lo sguardo svogliato incluse l'uomo sul sagrato della chiesa. Il suo viso adesso era girato verso di me, e con un movimento perfettamente involontario mi piegai per vederlo. Nello stesso momento lui alzò la testa e mi guardò. Pensai immediatamente a un verme saprofago. Non posso dire cosa fosse di quell’uomo che mi ripugnava, ma l'impressione di un paffuto verme bianco dei cadaveri fu così intensa e nauseante che devo averlo mostrato nella mia espressione, perché lui voltò quel suo viso gonfio con un movimento che mi fece pensare a una larva disturbata di una bara.

Tornai al mio cavalletto e feci cenno alla modella di riprendere la sua posa. Dopo

aver lavorato un po’ mi convinsi che stavo rovinando quello che avevo fatto prima, presi una spatola e raschiai via il colore nuovo. Il tono delle carni era giallastro e malsano, e non capivo come avevo potuto dipingere un tale color malaticcio in uno studio pittorico che fino a poco prima aveva brillato con i toni più sani.

Guardai Tessie. Lei non era cambiata, e il bel rosato della salute tingeva il suo collo e le sue guance mentre mi accigliavo.

“È qualcosa che ho fatto?” disse lei.

“No… io ho fatto un pasticcio di questo braccio, e davvero non riesco a capire come sono arrivato a dipingere una tale melma sulla tela” risposi.

“Forse non poso bene?” insistette lei.

“Ma certo, perfettamente.”

“Allora non è colpa mia?”

“No. Solo mia.”

“Mi dispiace” disse lei.

Le dissi che poteva riposare mentre applicavo straccio e trementina a quella piaga sulla mia tela, e lei se ne andò a fumare una sigaretta e guardare le illustrazioni del Courrier Français.

Non so se fosse qualcosa nella trementina o un difetto nella tela, ma più strofinavo e più quella cancrena sembrava diffondersi. Lavorai alacremente per toglierla, e tuttavia la malattia sembrava infettare ogni arto dello studio pittorico davanti a me. Allarmato lottavo per arrestarla, ma ora il colore del seno era cambiato e tutta la figura sembrava assorbire l'infezione come una spugna assorbe acqua. Con vigore applicai spatola, trementina e raschietto, pensando tutto il tempo a che séance avrei avuto con Duval che mi aveva venduto la tela, ma ben presto mi accorsi che non era la tela difettosa e neanche i colori di Edward.

“Deve essere la trementina” pensai con rabbia, “oppure i miei occhi sono diventati così sfocati e confusi dalla luce pomeridiana che non riesco a veder bene.” Chiamai Tessie, la modella. Lei venne e si chinò sulla mia sedia, soffiando anelli di fumo in aria.

“Ma che le avete fatto?” esclamò.

“Niente” ringhiai, “deve essere questa trementina!”

“Ma che colore orribile ha adesso” continuò. “Pensate che la mia carne assomigli a del formaggio fresco?”

“No, certo che no” dissi con rabbia, “mi hai mai visto dipingere così prima?”

“No, davvero!”

“E allora!”

“Deve essere la trementina, o qualcosa del genere...” ammise.

S’infilò la vestaglia giapponese e si avvicinò alla finestra. Io raschiai e strofinai fino a quando fui stanco, infine raccolsi i miei pennelli e li lanciai alla tela con un'imprecazione il cui tono raggiunse le orecchie di Tessie.

Lei prontamente cominciò: “Ecco, imprecate e fate stupidaggini, così rovinate i pennelli! Siete stato tre settimane su quello studio, e ora guardate! Che senso ha sciupare la tela? Che gente strana sono gli artisti!”

Mi vergognai come mi succedeva sempre dopo tali uscite, e girai la tela rovinata verso il muro. Tessie mi aiutò a pulire i pennelli, e poi se ne andò graziosamente a vestirsi.

Dal paravento mi intrattenne con piccoli ammonimenti in materia di perdita di controllo, fino a quando, pensando forse che ero stato sufficientemente tormentato, venne da me a implorarmi di abbottonarle la blusa sulle spalle dove non riusciva a raggiungerla.

“Tutto è andato storto dal momento in cui siete tornato dalla finestra e avete parlato di questo uomo orribile che avete visto nel cortile della chiesa” disse.

“Sì, probabilmente ha stregato il quadro” dissi, sbadigliando. Guardai l’orologio.

“Sono le sei ate” disse Tessie, aggiustandosi il cappello davanti allo specchio.

“Sì” risposi, “non volevo trattenerti cosi a lungo.” Mi sporsi fuori dalla finestra, ma mi ritrassi con disgusto, poiché il giovane uomo con il volto cereo si trovava sotto nel sagrato. Tessie vide il mio gesto di disapprovazione e si sporse dalla finestra.

“È l'uomo che non vi piace?” sussurrò.

Annuii.

“Non riesco a vedere la sua faccia, ma lui, in effetti, sembra grasso e morbido. In qualche modo…” continuò, voltandosi a guardarmi, “mi ricorda un sogno, un sogno terribile, che ho fatto una volta. Ma” rifletté, guardandosi le belle scarpe, “era stato davvero un sogno, dopo tutto?”

“Come faccio a saperlo?” sorrisi.

Tessie sorrise in risposta.

“C’eravate anche voi dentro” disse, “e forse ne potreste sapere qualcosa al riguardo.”

“Tessie! Tessie!” protestai, “non ti azzardare ad adularmi dicendo che sono nei tuoi sogni!”

“Ma l’ho fatto” insisté, “volete saperne di più?”

“Avanti” risposi, accendendomi una sigaretta.

Tessie si appoggiò sul davanzale della finestra aperta e cominciò molto seriamente.

“Una notte lo scorso inverno ero sdraiata a letto pensando a niente in particolare. Avevo posato per voi ed ero stanca, eppure mi sembrava impossibile riuscire a dormire. Sentii le campane cittadine suonare le dieci, le undici, poi mezzanotte. Devo essermi addormentata poco dopo, perché non ricordo di aver sentito le campane dopo mezzanotte. Mi sembrava di avere appena chiuso gli occhi quando sognai che qualcosa mi spingeva ad andare alla finestra. Mi alzai, e tirando su il vetro, mi sporsi. La 25ma Strada era deserta, per quanto mi era dato di vedere. Cominciavo ad avere paura, tutto al di fuori sembrava così… così nero e inquieto. Poi un rumore di ruote in lontananza giunse alle mie orecchie, e mi sembrava che questo fosse ciò che dovevo aspettare. Molto lentamente le ruote si avvicinarono, e infine potei distinguere un veicolo in movimento lungo la strada. Si avvicinava sempre più, e quando ò sotto la mia finestra, vidi che era un carro funebre. Poi, mentre tremavo di paura, il conducente si girò e guardò dritto verso di me. Quando mi svegliai ero in piedi vicino alla finestra aperta tremante di freddo, ma il nero carro funebre piumato e l'autista erano scomparsi. Questo sogno l’ho sognato nuovamente nel marzo scorso, e di nuovo mi sono svegliata accanto alla finestra aperta. Ieri notte il sogno è tornato. Vi

ricordate come pioveva. Quando mi sono svegliata, in piedi davanti alla finestra aperta, la mia camicia da notte era bagnata.”

“Ma io dove ero nel sogno?” le chiesi.

“Voi… voi eravate nella bara, ma non eravate morto.”

“Nella bara?”

“Sì.”

“Come lo sai? Potevi vedermi?”

“No, sapevo solo che eravate lì.”

“Avevi mangiato troppi toast al formaggio o l'insalata d'aragosta?” iniziai ridendo, ma la ragazza mi interruppe con un grido spaventato.

“Ehi! Che succede?” dissi, mentre lei si ritraeva a lato della finestra.

“Lui… l'uomo là nel cortile… era lui che guidava il carro funebre.”

“Sciocchezze” dissi, ma gli occhi di Tessie erano spalancati dal terrore. Andai alla finestra e guardai fuori. L'uomo era scomparso. “Vieni, Tessie” la esortai, “non essere sciocca. Hai posato per troppo tempo, sei nervosa.”

“Pensate che potrei dimenticare quella faccia?” mormorò. “Tre volte ho visto il carro funebre are sotto la mia finestra, e ogni volta il conducente si è voltato a guardarmi. Oh, il suo viso era così bianco e… e morbido? Sembrava morto. Sembrava come fosse morto da tanto tempo.”

Costrinsi la ragazza a sedersi e ingoiare un bicchierino di Marsala. Poi mi sedetti accanto a lei, e cercai di darle qualche consiglio.

“Senti, Tessie,” dissi, “ora tu vai in campagna per una settimana o due, e non avrai più sogni con carri funebri. Tu posi tutto il giorno, e quando arrivi a sera, i tuoi nervi sono sconvolti. Non ce la puoi fare così. E poi, invece di andare a letto quando la giornata di lavoro è finita, ti precipiti a fare scampagnate al Sulzer Park, o vai all’Eldorado o a Coney Island, e quando torni qui la mattina dopo sei sfinita. Non c'e nessun carro funebre. Solo un sogno indigesto.”

Lei sorrise debolmente.

“E l'uomo nel sagrato?”

“Oh, è solo un normale, malsano essere qualunque.”

“Come è vero che il mio nome è Tessie Reardon, vi giuro, signor Scott, che il

volto di quell’uomo sotto nel sagrato è il volto dell'uomo che guidava il carro funebre!”

“E allora?” dissi. “È un commercio onesto.”

“Ma allora pensate che ho visto davvero il carro funebre?”

“Oh” dissi diplomaticamente, “se davvero così fosse, potrebbe non essere improbabile che l'uomo là sotto lo conduca davvero. Non c'è nulla di strano in questo.”

Tessie si alzò, srotolò il fazzoletto profumato, e prendendo un pezzo di gomma da masticare da un nodo dell'orlo, la mise in bocca. Poi indossando i guanti mi porse la mano con un franco, “Buona notte, signor Scott” e se ne andò.

II

La mattina seguente, Thomas, il fattorino, mi portò l'Herald e un po' di notizie. La chiesa accanto era stata venduta. Ringraziai il cielo della cosa, non che per essere un cattolico avessi alcuna ripugnanza per la congregazione della porta accanto, ma i miei nervi erano scossi da un rumoroso arringatore, del quale ogni parola echeggiava attraverso la navata come se fosse stato presente nelle mie stanze, e che insisteva con le sue erre con una persistenza nasale che faceva ribellare ogni mio istinto. C’era anche un demonio in forma umana, organista, che snocciolava alcuni dei grandi inni antichi con un'interpretazione di suo, e io non potevo che desiderare il sangue di una creatura che suonava i Gloria con un emendamento agli accordi in minore quale si sente solo in un quartetto di giovanissimi studenti. Credo che il ministro fosse un buon uomo, ma quando urlava: “E il signorrrrre disse a Mosè, il Signorrrre è un guerriero, perché Signorrrre è il suo nome. La mia ira si accenderà e io vi ucciderrrrrò con la spada!” mi chiedevo quanti secoli di purgatorio ci sarebbero voluti per espiare tale peccato.

“Chi ha comprato la proprietà?” chiesi a Thomas.

“Nessuno che io conosco, signore. Dicono che quegli gentlemen che hanno pure ‘sti appartamenti ‘Amilton li stavano a guardare. Loro ci potrebbero fare altri studi per gente artistica.”

Andai alla finestra. Il giovane con il volto malsano era in piedi accanto al cancello del sagrato e alla sola vista, la stessa travolgente ripugnanza si impossessò di me.

“A proposito, Thomas” dissi, “chi è quel tizio laggiù?”

Thomas tirò su con il naso. “Quel verme là, signore? È il guardiano notturno della chiesa, signore. Mi fa fatica solo a guardarlo tutta la notte che ci a sui gradini e fissa tutti a bocca storta. Ci darei un pugno a lui, scusi signore.”

“Vai avanti, Thomas.”

“Una notte si stava a tornare a casa con 'Arry, l'altro ragazzo inglese, e lo vedo a sedere sui gradini. Ero io e poi Molly e Jen con noi, signore, due ragazze, cameriere, e ci guarda e insulta a guardarci e io allora dico: ‘Che ci hai da guardare, sporco lumacone?', scusi, signore, ma è questo che c’ho detto, signore. Ma lui niente e io ci dico: ‘Fatti sotto e ti do un pugno in quella testaccia che c’hai'. Poi apro il cancello e entro, ma lui non dice una parola e ci insulta a guardarci. Allora io gliene mollo uno ma, huh, quella sua testa, era fredda e molliccicosa che ti faceva schifo a toccare, huh.”

“Cosa fece, allora?”chiesi con curiosità.

“Lui? Gniente.”

“E tu, Thomas?”

Il giovanotto arrossì per l'imbarazzo e sorrise a disagio.

“Signor Scott, signore, io non sono vigliacco, no, e non mi capacito perché ho corso. Ero nel 5° Lanceri, signore, trombettiere a Tel-el-Kebir, e fui ferito vicino ai pozzi.”

“Non vorrai dirmi che sei scappato?”

“Sì, signore, io sì.”

“Perché?”

“Questo è proprio quello che voglio sapere, signore. Ho afferrato Molly e ho corso a perdifiato, e anche loro il resto erano spaventati quanto me.”

“Ma di che avevano paura?”

Thomas si rifiutò di rispondere per un po', ma ora la mia curiosità su quel giovane ripugnante là sotto era stata svegliata e lo incalzai. Tre anni di permanenza in America non solo avevano modificato il cockney di Thomas, ma gli avevano anche dato la paura americana del ridicolo.

“Voi non mi crederete, signor Scott, signore?”

“Sì, lo farò.”

“Voi riderete di me, signore?”

“Sciocchezze!”

Esitò. “Beh, signore, è la verità di Dio, giuro, che quando gliene mollai uno, lui mi prese i polsi, signore, e quando io ho storto il suo pugno morbido e molliccio, uno dei suoi diti mi è rimasto in mano!”

Il totale disgusto e l'orrore sul volto Thomas dovevano essere il riflesso dei miei, perché aggiunse:

“È orrido, e ora quando lo vedo, io me ne vado subito, mi fa stomaco.”

Quando Thomas se ne fu andato andai alla finestra. L'uomo stava accanto all’inferriata della chiesa con entrambe le mani sul cancello. Mi ritirai in fretta al mio cavalletto, disgustato e sconvolto quando vidi che il dito medio della mano destra mancava.

Alle nove Tessie apparve e scomparve dietro il paravento con un allegro “Buongiorno, signor Scott.” Quando riapparve e prese la sua posa sul cavalletto da modella, io iniziai una nuova tela con suo sommo piacere. Lei rimase in silenzio finché fui sul disegno, ma non appena il grattare del carboncino cessò e presi il fissativo, cominciò a chiacchiere.

“Oh, mi sono divertita così tanto, ieri notte. Siamo andati al Tony Pastor’s.”

“Chi 'noi'?” chiesi.

“Oh, Maggie, lo sapete, la modella del signor Whyte, e Pinkie McCormick, che noi chiamiamo Pinkie perché ha quella bella capigliatura rossa che voi artisti amate tanto… e Lizzie Burke.”

Mandai una pioggia di spruzzi di fissativo sulla tela, e dissi: ”Beh, va avanti”.

“Abbiamo visto Kelly e Baby Barnes la skirt-dancer e… e tanto altro. Ho flirtato.”

“Come, allora non pensi più a me, Tessie?”

Lei rise e scosse la testa.

“È il fratello di Lizzie Burke, Ed. Un perfetto gentleman.”

Mi sentii costretto a darle qualche consiglio paterno riguardo a certi incontri, che lei prese con un sorriso luminoso.

“Oh, io so cavarmela in quelle situazioni” disse, esaminando la sua gomma da masticare, “ma Ed è diverso. Lizzie è la mia migliore amica.”

Poi raccontò di come Ed era tornato dal calzificio di Lowell, Massachusetts, e aveva trovato lei e Lizzie cresciute, e che giovane uomo si era fatto, e come non badava a sperperare un mezzo dollaro per gelati e ostriche per festeggiare il suo ingresso come impiegato nel reparto lane di Macy’s. Prima che finisse io avevo cominciato a dipingere, e lei riprese la posa, sorridendo e chiacchierando come un erotto. A mezzogiorno avevo il lavoro piuttosto avanti e Tessie venne a guardare.

“Così va meglio” disse.

Lo pensavo anch'io, e mangiai il mio pranzo con una sensazione di soddisfazione che tutto andasse bene. Tessie allargò il suo pranzo su un tavolo da disegno di fronte a me e bevemmo il nostro vino rosso dalla stessa bottiglia e accendemmo le nostre sigarette con lo stesso cerino. Ero molto affezionato a Tessie. L’avevo vista sbocciare in una donna sottile ma squisitamente formata da una bambina fragile e goffa. Aveva posato per me negli ultimi tre anni, e fra tutte le mie modelle lei era la preferita. Mi avrebbe turbato moltissimo, anzi, se fosse diventata “dura”o “leggera”, come si dice, ma non avevo mai notato un deterioramento dei suoi modi, e sentivo dentro di me che era tutto a posto. Io e lei non avevamo mai discusso di principi morali, e certo non avevo intenzione di farlo né ora né mai, anche perché non ne avevo, e in parte perché sapevo che avrebbe fatto quello che voleva a dispetto di me. Comunque speravo che avrebbe saputo evitare le complicazioni, perché volevo il suo bene, e poi avevo anche un desiderio egoistico di mantenermi la modella migliore. Sapevo che flirtare, come lei lo definiva, non aveva alcuna importanza per ragazze come Tessie, e che queste cose in America non assomigliano affatto alla stesse cose di Parigi. Tuttavia, avendo vissuto con gli occhi aperti, sapevo che qualcuno si sarebbe portato via Tessie un giorno, in un modo o nell’altro, e anche se dicevo a me stesso che il matrimonio era una sciocchezza, sinceramente speravo che, in questo caso, ci sarebbe stato un prete in vista. Io sono un cattolico. Quando ascolto la messa, quando mi segno, sento che tutto, me compreso, è più allegro, e quando mi confesso, mi fa bene. Un uomo che vive da solo tanto quanto faccio io, deve confessarsi a qualcuno. E poi Sylvia era cattolica, ed era un motivo sufficiente per me. Ma io parlavo di Tessie, che era molto diversa. Anche Tessie era cattolica e molto più devota di me, così, tutto sommato, avevo poca paura per

la mia graziosa modella fino a che non si fosse innamorata. Eppure sapevo che solo il destino avrebbe scelto il suo futuro, ed io pregavo quel destino di tenerla lontano da uomini come me e mettere sul suo cammino solo degli Ed Burke e dei Jimmy McCormick, benedetto il suo bel viso dolce!

Tessie sedeva soffiando anelli di fumo fino al soffitto e tintinnava il ghiaccio nel suo bicchiere.

“Lo sai che anch’io ho fatto un sogno la notte scorsa?” osservai.

“Non su quell’uomo” rise lei.

“Esattamente. Un sogno simile al tuo, solo molto peggio.”

Fu stupido e sconsiderato da parte mia dirle questo, ma si sa quanto poco tatto ha un pittore di media bravura. “Devo essermi addormentato all’incirca alle dieci,” continuai “e dopo un po’ sognai di svegliarmi. Sentivo chiaramente le campane di mezzanotte, il vento tra i rami degli alberi e il fischio dei piroscafi dalla baia, tanto che anche adesso riesco a malapena a credere di non essere stato sveglio. Mi sembrava di essere sdraiato in una cassa che aveva il coperchio di vetro. Vedevo vagamente i lampioni mentre avo, perché devo dirti, Tessie, la cassa in cui mi sembrava di giacere era adagiata su una carrozza imbottita che mi scuoteva ando sul selciato di pietra. Dopo un po' diventai impaziente e cercai di muovermi, ma la cassa era troppo stretta. Avevo le mani incrociate sul petto, quindi non potevo alzarle per aiutarmi. Ascoltavo e poi provai a chiamare. La mia voce se ne era andata. Sentivo il calpestio dei cavalli attaccati al carro, e anche il respiro del conducente. Poi un altro suono mi arrivò alle orecchie, come l’alzarsi del vetro di una finestra. Riuscivo a girare a malapena la testa, e scoprii che potevo vedere non solo attraverso il coperchio della mia cassa, ma anche attraverso i li di vetro laterali del veicolo coperto. Vedevo case, vuote e

silenziose, senza luce né vita in nessuna di loro, tranne una. In quella casa era aperta una finestra al primo piano e una figura fatta di bianco stava guardando giù in strada. Eri tu.”

Tessie aveva voltato la faccia e si era appoggiata sul tavolo con il gomito.

“Potevo vedere la tua faccia” ripresi, “e mi sembrava di essere molto addolorato. Poi continuammo ed entrammo in uno stretto vicolo nero. I cavalli si fermarono. Io aspettai e aspettai, gli occhi chiusi per la paura e l’impazienza, ma tutto era silenzioso come una tomba. Dopo quella che mi sembrò un’attesa di ore, cominciai a sentirmi a disagio. La sensazione che ci fosse qualcuno vicino mi fece aprire gli occhi. Allora vidi la faccia bianca del conducente del carro funebre che mi guardava attraverso il coperchio della bara…”

Un singhiozzo di Tessie mi interruppe. Tremava come una foglia. Vidi che avevo fatto la figura di un asino e tentai di riparare il danno.

“Dai, Tess,” dissi “te l’ho detto solo per mostrare come la tua storia possa influenzare i sogni di un'altra. Non crederai davvero che gii in una bara, vero? Che tremi a fare? Non vedi che il tuo sogno e la mia antipatia irragionevole per quel guardiano inoffensivo della chiesa hanno semplicemente messo a lavorare il cervello non appena mi sono addormentato?”

Lei appoggiò la testa tra le braccia, e singhiozzò come se il suo cuore si stesse per spezzare. Oh, che notevole triplo somaro ero mai! Ma stavo per superare il mio record. Mi avvicinai e le misi il braccio intorno le spalle.

“Tessie cara, perdonami” dissi. “Non avevo nessun interesse a spaventarti con

queste sciocchezze. Tu sei una ragazza troppo sensibile e troppo buona cattolica per credere nei sogni.”

La sua mano si strinse alla mia e la sua testa ricadde sulla mia spalla, ma lei tramava ancora ed io la coccolai e la confortai.

“Forza, Tess, apri gli occhi e sorridi.”

I suoi occhi si aprirono con un movimento lento e languido e incontrarono i miei, ma la loro espressione era così strana che mi affrettai a rassicurarla di nuovo.

“Sono tutte fandonie, Tessie, non devi aver paura che te ne possa venire alcun male.”

“No” disse lei, ma le sue labbra scarlatte tremarono.

“Allora, qual è il problema? Hai paura?”

“Sì. Non per me.”

“Per me, allora?” chiesi gaiamente.

“Per voi” mormorò con voce quasi impercettibile. “Io… io mi preoccupo per te.”

In un primo momento cominciai a ridere, ma quando capii ciò che voleva dire, una scossa elettrica mi ò attraverso il corpo, e rimasi seduto come un uomo trasformato in pietra. Questo era stato il coronamento all’idiozia che avevo commesso. Nell'attimo che intercorse tra la sua replica e la mia risposta pensai a mille reazioni per quella confessione innocente. Potevo risolverla con una risata, far finta di fraintenderla e rassicurarla per la mia salute, potevo semplicemente farle presente che era impossibile che mi potesse amare. Ma la mia risposta fu più veloce dei miei pensieri: potevo pensare quanto volevo, perché ormai era troppo tardi, l'avevo già baciata sulla bocca.

Quella sera feci la mia solita eggiata a Washington Park, meditando sugli avvenimenti della giornata. Ero completamente preso. Non c'era verso di tornare indietro adesso, e fissai il futuro dritto in faccia. Non ero un brav’uomo, nemmeno scrupoloso, ma non avevo idea di ingannare me o Tessie. L'unica ione della mia vita giaceva sepolta nelle foreste illuminate dal sole della Bretagna. Era sepolta per sempre? La Speranza gridò “No!” Per tre anni avevo ascoltato la voce della Speranza, e per tre anni avevo aspettato un o sulla mia soglia. Sylvia dimenticata? “No!” la Speranza gridava.

Ho detto che non ero una brava persona. Questo è vero, ma non ero neanche il classico cattivo da operetta. Avevo condotto una vita facile e spericolata, accettando ogni invito al piacere, deplorando e talvolta amaramente rimpiangendo le conseguenze. In una sola cosa, tranne la mia pittura, ero serio, ed era qualcosa che giaceva nascosta se non persa nei boschi bretoni.

Era troppo tardi per me per rimpiangere ciò che era accaduto quel giorno. Qualunque cosa fosse stata, pietà, un'improvvisa tenerezza per il dolore, o il più brutale istinto di vanità soddisfatta, era ininfluente adesso, e salvo non avessi voluto schiacciare un cuore innocente, il mio percorso era segnato. Il fuoco e la forza, la profondità della ione di un amore che non avevo mai nemmeno

sospettato, con tutta la mia esperienza immaginata nel mondo, non mi lasciavano altra alternativa che mandarla via o corrisponderle. Se poi fosse la mia codardia nel dare dolore agli altri, o fosse il fatto di aver dentro di me un poco del cupo puritano, non lo so, ma mi rifiutai di declinare la responsabilità per quel bacio sconsiderato, e infatti non ebbi il tempo di farlo prima che le porte del suo cuore si aprissero e il diluvio si riversasse. Altri che abitualmente fanno il loro dovere e trovano soddisfazione nel rendere se stessi e tutti gli altri infelici, potrebbero anche aver trovato il modo di resistere. Io non lo feci. Non osai. Dopo che la tempesta si fu calmata, le dissi che avrebbe fatto meglio ad amare Ed Burke e indossate un semplice anello d'oro, ma non ne volle sapere, e pensai che finché lei decideva di amare qualcuno che non poteva sposare, era meglio fossi io. Io, almeno, potevo trattarla con affetto complice, e al momento della fine della sua infatuazione, ciò non l’avrebbe danneggiata. Perché io ero deciso su questo punto, anche se sapevo quanto sarebbe stato difficile. Mi ricordai la solita risoluzione delle liaison platoniche, e pensai a quanto disgustato ero ogni volta che ne sentivo parlare. Sapevo che stavo intraprendendo un compito enorme per un uomo così spregiudicato quale ero, e sognai il futuro, ma mai per un momento dubitai che lei con me non fosse al sicuro. Chiunque altra oltre Tessie e non mi sarei fatto degli scrupoli. Ma non mi venne in mente di sacrificare Tessie come avrei sacrificato una donna di mondo. Guardai il futuro in faccia e vidi i probabili finali. Lei si sarebbe stancata di tutta la faccenda, o diventava così infelice che avrei dovuto sposarla o andarmene via. Se la sposavo saremmo stati infelici, io con una moglie inadatta a me, e lei con un marito inadatto per qualsiasi donna. Perché il mio ato a stento mi dava il diritto di sposarmi. Se fossi fuggito, lei avrebbe potuto ammalarsi, riprendersi e sposare un Eddie Burke, o incautamente o deliberatamente fare qualche pazzia. D'altra parte, se si stancava di me, poi tutta la sua vita le si sarebbe stesa davanti con una bella veduta di Eddie Burke e gli anelli di matrimonio e due gemelli e appartamenti a Harlem e il cielo sa che altro. Come eggiavo lungo gli alberi di Washington Arch decisi che comunque lei avrebbe trovato un amico in me, e il futuro poteva fare ciò che voleva. Allora rientrai in casa e indossai gli abiti per la sera poiché un biglietto vagamente profumato sul mio cassettone diceva “Un taxi all’ingresso artisti alle undici” e il messaggio era firmato “Edith Carmichael, Metropolitan Theatre”.

Quella notte cenai, o meglio cenammo, la signorina Carmichael ed io, da Solari’s, e quando l'alba stavo cominciando a dorare la croce sulla Memorial

Church io entrai a Washington Square dopo aver lasciato Edith al Brunswick. Non c'era anima viva nel parco mentre avo lungo gli alberi, e la eggiata mi portò dalla statua di Garibaldi agli Hamilton Apartment House, ma mentre avo sul sagrato vidi una figura seduta sui gradini di pietra. Mio malgrado un brivido freddo si insinuò in me alla vista del volto gonfio e bianco, e mi affrettai a are. Allora lui disse qualcosa, che avrebbe potuto essermi indirizzato o poteva essere semplicemente un mormorare a se stesso, ma un’improvvisa rabbia, furiosa, che tale creatura potesse rivolgermisi a quel modo, mi si accese dentro. Per un attimo ebbi voglia di girarmi e sbattergli il bastone da eggio sulla testa, ma continuai a camminare, e entrato negli Hamilton, salii al mio appartamento. Per qualche tempo mi rigirai nel letto cercando di togliermi il suono della sua voce dalle orecchie, non ci riuscii. Mi riempiva la testa, quel borbottio, come il denso fumo oleoso di una vasca di estrazione dei grassi o un odore di decomposizione disgustoso. E mentre giacevo e mi rigiravo, la voce nelle mie orecchie sembrava più distinta, e cominciai a capire le parole che aveva mormorato. Vennero a me lentamente, come se le avessi dimenticate, e alla fine potei dare un senso a quei suoni. Dicevano:

“Hai trovato il Segno Giallo?”

“Hai trovato il Segno Giallo?”

“Hai trovato il Segno Giallo?”

Ero furibondo. Che voleva dire? Poi, con una maledizione a lui e alla sua specie mi girai e mi addormentai, ma quando mi svegliai più tardi ero pallido e smarrito, perché avevo sognato il sogno della notte precedente, e mi turbava più di quanto volessi pensare.

Mi vestii e scesi nel mio studio. Tessie sedeva accanto alla finestra, ma quando

entrai, si alzò e mi mise le braccia intorno al collo per un bacio innocente. Sembrava così dolce e delicata che la baciai di nuovo e poi sedetti davanti al cavalletto.

“Ciao! Dov'è lo studio che ho iniziato ieri?” chiesi.

Tessie sembrava attenta, ma non rispondeva. Io cominciai a frugare tra i mucchi di tele, dicendo: “Sbrigati, Tess, e preparati, dobbiamo approfittare della luce del mattino.”

Quando alla fine rinunciai alla ricerca e mi voltai a guardarmi intorno nella stanza alla ricerca della tela mancante, notai Tessie in piedi vicino al paravento con i suoi vestiti ancora indosso.

“Qual è il problema” chiesi, ” ti senti bene?”

“Sì.”

“Allora sbrigati.”

“Vuoi che posi come… come ho sempre fatto?”

Allora capii. Qui era una nuova complicazione. Avevo perso, era chiaro, la migliore modella nuda che avessi mai visto. Guardai Tessie. Il suo viso era scarlatto. Ahimè! Ahimè! Avevamo mangiato dell'albero della conoscenza, e

l’Eden e l’innocenza primigenia erano sogni del ato, per lei intendo.

Suppongo che notò la delusione sul mio viso, perché disse: “Poserò se vuoi. La tela è dietro il paravento, qui dove l’ho messa”.

“No” dissi, “cominceremo qualcosa di nuovo” e andai nel mio armadio e scelsi un costume moresco che avvampava di orpelli. Era un vero e proprio costume, e Tessie si ritirò dietro il paravento, incantata. Quando uscì di nuovo rimasi meravigliato. I suoi lunghi capelli neri erano legati sopra la fronte con un cerchietto di turchesi e le estremità erano arricciate alla sua cintura scintillante. I piedi erano racchiusi in pantofole ricamate a punta e la gonna, curiosamente lavorata con arabeschi in argento, le scendeva alle caviglie. Il giacchetto, di un blu profondo metallizzato, era ricamato d'argento e la giacca corta Moresca costellata con turchesi le si addiceva meravigliosamente. Venne da me e sollevò il viso sorridente. Infilai la mano in tasca e tirai fuori una catena d'oro con una croce attaccata, lasciandola cadere sopra la sua testa.

“È tua, Tessie.”

“Mia?” balbettò.

“Tua. Ora vai a posare.” Allora con un sorriso radioso corse dietro il paravento e riapparve con una piccola scatola sulla quale era scritto il mio nome.

“Avevo intenzione di dartelo quando fossi andata a casa stasera” disse, “ma non posso aspettare.”

Aprì la scatola. Sul cotone rosa era adagiato un fermaglio di onice nero su cui era intarsiato un simbolo curioso o una lettera, in oro. Non era né arabo né cinese, né, come scoprii in seguito, apparteneva a una qualsiasi scrittura umana.

“È tutto quello che avevo da darti come mio ricordo” disse timidamente.

Ero seccato, ma le dissi quanto lo avrei tenuto caro e le promisi di indossarlo sempre. Lei lo appuntò sulla mia giacca sotto il risvolto.

“Com’è sciocco, Tess, andare a comprarmi una cosa bella come questa!” dissi.

“Io non l’ho comprata” rise.

“E dove l'hai presa?”

Allora mi raccontò di come l’aveva trovato un giorno venendo dall'Acquario nella Battery, di come aveva pubblicizzato il ritrovamento e controllato i giornali, ma alla fine si era arresa a ogni speranza di trovare il proprietario.

“È stato l'inverno scorso” disse, “proprio il giorno in cui ebbi il primo sogno orribile del carro funebre.”

Mi ricordai il mio sogno della notte precedente, ma non dissi nulla, e intanto il mio carboncino volava sopra una nuova tela, e Tessie era immobile sul suo piedistallo da modella.

III

Il giorno seguente fu un vero disastro per me. Mentre muovevo una tela incorniciata da un cavalletto all’altro, il mio piede scivolò sul pavimento lucido e caddi pesantemente su entrambi i polsi. Erano così malamente slogati che era inutile tentare di tenere un pennello, e fui costretto a vagare per lo studio, fissando i disegni e gli schizzi incompiuti, fino a quando la disperazione mi afferrò e mi sedetti a fumare e girarmi i pollici dalla rabbia. La pioggia soffiava contro le finestre e rumoreggiava sul tetto della chiesa, mettendomi in uno stato di agitazione con il suo interminabile picchiettio. Tessie sedeva cucendo alla finestra, e ogni tanto alzava la testa e mi guardava con tanta innocente comione che cominciai a vergognarmi della mia irritazione e cercai qualcosa di cui occuparmi. Avevo letto tutti i giornali e tutti i libri della biblioteca, ma pur di far qualcosa andai agli scaffali della libreria e la aprii con il gomito. Conoscevo ogni volume dal suo colore e li guardai tutti, ando lentamente intorno alla biblioteca e fischiettando per tenere su il morale. Mi stavo voltando per andare in sala da pranzo quando il mio sguardo cadde su un libro rilegato in pelle di serpente, in un angolo del ripiano superiore dell'ultimo scaffale della libreria. Non me lo ricordavo, e dal pavimento non riuscivo a decifrare la scritta pallida sul dorso, così andai nella sala da fumo e chiamai Tessie. Lei entrò dallo studio e salì la scaletta per raggiungere il libro.

“Che cos'è?” chiesi.

“Il Re in Giallo.”

Ero stupefatto. Chi lo aveva messo lì? Come era entrato nelle mie stanze? Avevo da molto tempo deciso che non avrei mai aperto quel libro e niente al mondo mi avrebbe convinto a comprarlo. Timoroso che la curiosità mi potesse tentare non lo avevo guardato neanche nelle librerie. Se avessi mai avuto la curiosità di

leggerlo, la tragedia terribile della giovane Castaigne, che conoscevo, mi impediva di esplorare le sue pagine malvagie. Avevo sempre rifiutato di ascoltare anche una sola descrizione di esso, anzi, nessuno aveva mai osato discutere la seconda parte ad alta voce, così non avevo assolutamente alcuna conoscenza di quello che potevano rivelare quelle pagine. Fissavo la sua velenosa rilegatura maculata come avrei fatto con un rettile.

“Non toccarlo, Tessie” dissi, “vieni giù.”

Naturalmente il mio ammonimento fu sufficiente a suscitare la sua curiosità, e prima che potessi impedirlo lei preso il libro e, ridendo, a o danzante si diresse verso lo studio. La chiamai ma lei scivolò via con un sorriso struggente dalle mie mani inermi, e io la segui con una certa impazienza.

“Tessie” gridai, entrando nella biblioteca, “senti, sono serio. Metti via quel libro. Non voglio che tu lo apra!” La biblioteca era vuota. Andai in entrambi gli studi, poi nelle camere da letto, la lavanderia, la cucina e infine tornai in biblioteca e iniziai una ricerca accurata. Si era nascosta così bene che fu quasi mezz’ora più tardi che la scoprii accovacciata, bianca e silenziosa, alla finestra a grata nel ripostiglio del piano di sopra. Al primo sguardo capii che era stata punita per la sua leggerezza. Il Re in Giallo giaceva ai suoi piedi, ma il libro era aperto alla seconda parte. Guardai Tessie e vidi che era troppo tardi. Aveva aperto Il Re in Giallo. Allora la presi per mano e la condussi nello studio. Sembrava stordita, e quando le dissi di sdraiarsi sul divano, lei mi obbedì senza una parola. Dopo un po’ chiuse gli occhi e il suo respiro diventò profondo e regolare, ma non potevo dire se dormiva o no. Per molto tempo rimasi seduto in silenzio accanto a lei, ma lei non si mosse né parlò, e alla fine mi alzai, ed entrando nella stanza inutilizzata del ripostiglio, presi il libro con la mia mano più sana. Sembrava pesante come piombo, ma lo portai nello studio, e sedendomi sul tappeto accanto al divano, lo aprì e lo lessi dall'inizio alla fine.

Quando, debole per le troppe emozioni, lasciai cadere il volume e appoggiai

stancamente la schiena contro il divano, Tessie aprì gli occhi e mi guardò…

Parlammo per qualche tempo in un tono monotono e inerte prima di capire che stavamo discutendo de Il Re in Giallo. Oh, il peccato di scrivere tali parole… parole che sono chiare come il cristallo, limpide e musicali come sorgenti di acqua frizzante, parole che luccicano e risplendono come i diamanti avvelenati dei Medici! Oh, la malvagità, la dannazione senza speranza di un'anima che può affascinare e paralizzare creature umane con tali parole… parole comprensibili all’ignorante come al sapiente, che sono più preziose dei gioielli, più confortanti della musica, più terribili della morte!

Parlammo, incuranti delle ombre che si raccoglievano, e lei mi implorava di buttare via il fermaglio di onice nero curiosamente intarsiato che ora sapeva essere il Segno Giallo. Non saprò mai perché rifiutai, sebbene anche ora, qui nella mia camera da letto mentre scrivo questa confessione, dovrei essere felice di sapere che cosa mi impedì di strappare il Segno Giallo dal mio petto e gettarlo nel fuoco. Sono sicuro di averlo voluto fare, eppure Tessie mi supplicò invano. Scese la notte e le ore si trascinarono, e ancora noi ci mormoravamo a vicenda del Re e della Maschera Pallida, e mezzanotte suonò dalle guglie velate della città avvolta di nebbia. Parlammo di Hastur e di Cassilda, mentre fuori la nebbia rotolava contro i vetri vuoti delle finestre come le onde di nuvole rotolano e s’infrangono sulle rive di Hali.

La casa era silenziosa adesso, e non un suono saliva dalle strade umide. Tessie giaceva tra i cuscini, il suo viso era una macchia grigia nel buio ma le sue mani erano strette nelle mie, e sapevo che lei sapeva e leggeva i miei pensieri come io leggevo i suoi, perché avevamo capito il mistero della Iadi e il Fantasma della Verità era spiegato. Poi, come rispondevamo a vicenda, rapidamente, in silenzio, pensiero su pensiero, le ombre si agitarono su di noi nelle tenebre e remoto, nelle strade lontane, sentimmo un suono. Si avvicinava, sempre più vicino, lo scricchiolio sordo delle ruote, vicino e ancora più vicino, e ora, fuori dalla porta cessò, ed io mi trascinai alla finestra e vidi un carro funebre nero e piumato. Il cancello sotto si aprì e si chiuse, ed io strisciai tremando alla mia porta e la

sprangai, ma sapevo che nessun catenaccio o serratura poteva tenere fuori quella creatura che stava venendo per il Segno Giallo. Ora lo sentivo muoversi dolcemente lungo il corridoio. Ora era alla porta, e i catenacci marcivano al suo tocco. Ora era entrato. Con gli occhi che mi uscivano dalle orbite, sbirciai nel buio, ma quando entrò nella stanza io non lo vidi.

Fu solo quando lo sentii avvolgermi nella sua fredda e morbida stretta che allora gridai e lottai con furore mortale, ma le mie mani erano inutili e lui strappò il fermaglio d’onice dalla mia giacca e mi colpì in piena faccia. Allora, mentre cadevo, sentii il debole grido di Tessie e il suo spirito fuggire: e durante la caduta avrei voluto seguirla, perché sapevo che il Re in Giallo aveva aperto il suo mantello a brandelli e ora c'era solo Dio¹ a cui piangere.

Potrei dire di più, ma non so vedere quale aiuto potrebbe essere per il mondo. Quanto a me, io sono oltre ogni aiuto o speranza umana. Mentre giaccio qui, scrivendo, incurante persino di morire prima di concludere, posso vedere il medico raccogliere le sue polveri e le sue fiale con un gesto vago al buon prete accanto a me, che comprendo.

Sarebbero molto curiosi di conoscere la tragedia – quelli del mondo esterno che scrivono libri e stampano milioni di giornali - ma io non scriverò più, e il Padre confessore sigillerà le mie ultime parole con il sigillo della santità quando il suo sacro ufficio sarà concluso. Quelli del mondo di fuori possono inviare le loro creature nelle case distrutte e nei focolari colpiti a morte, e i loro giornali s’ingrasseranno con il sangue e con le lacrime, ma con me le loro spie devono arrestarsi di fronte al confessionale. Sanno che Tessie è morta e che io sto morendo. Sanno come la gente della casa, allarmata da un urlo infernale, si precipitò nella mia stanza e trovarono un vivo e due morti, ma non sanno quello che racconterò loro adesso, non sanno che il medico ha detto, indicando un orribile mucchio decomposto sul pavimento, il cadavere livido del guardiano dalla chiesa:

“Non ho nessuna teoria, nessuna spiegazione. Quell’uomo deve essere morto da mesi!”

Credo di star morendo. Vorrei che il prete…

I

There are so many things which are impossible to explain! Why should certain chords in music make me think of the brown and golden tints of autumn foliage? Why should the Mass of Sainte Cécile bend my thoughts wandering among caverns whose walls blaze with ragged masses of virgin silver? What was it in the roar and turmoil of Broadway at six o'clock that flashed before my eyes the picture of a still Breton forest where sunlight filtered through spring foliage and Sylvia bent, half curiously, half tenderly, over a small green lizard, murmuring: "To think that this also is a little ward of God!"

When I first saw the watchman his back was toward me. I looked at him indifferently until he went into the church. I paid no more attention to him than I had to any other man who lounged through Washington Square that morning, and when I shut my window and turned back into my studio I had forgotten him. Late in the afternoon, the day being warm, I raised the window again and leaned out to get a sniff of air. A man was standing in the courtyard of the church, and I noticed him again with as little interest as I had that morning. I looked across the square to where the fountain was playing and then, with my mind filled with vague impressions of trees, asphalt drives, and the moving groups of nursemaids and holiday-makers, I started to walk back to my easel. As I turned, my listless glance included the man below in the churchyard. His face was toward me now, and with a perfectly involuntary movement I bent to see it. At the same moment he raised his head and looked at me. Instantly I thought of a coffin-worm. Whatever it was about the man that repelled me I did not know, but the impression of a plump white grave-worm was so intense and nauseating that I must have shown it in my expression, for he turned his puffy face away with a movement which made me think of a disturbed grub in a chestnut.

I went back to my easel and motioned the model to resume her pose. After working a while I was satisfied that I was spoiling what I had done as rapidly as possible, and I took up a palette knife and scraped the colour out again. The flesh

tones were sallow and unhealthy, and I did not understand how I could have painted such sickly colour into a study which before that had glowed with healthy tones.

I looked at Tessie. She had not changed, and the clear flush of health dyed her neck and cheeks as I frowned.

"Is it something I've done?" she said.

"No,—I've made a mess of this arm, and for the life of me I can't see how I came to paint such mud as that into the canvas," I replied.

"Don't I pose well?" she insisted.

"Of course, perfectly."

"Then it's not my fault?"

"No. It's my own."

"I am very sorry," she said.

I told her she could rest while I applied rag and turpentine to the plague spot on

my canvas, and she went off to smoke a cigarette and look over the illustrations in the Courrier Français.

I did not know whether it was something in the turpentine or a defect in the canvas, but the more I scrubbed the more that gangrene seemed to spread. I worked like a beaver to get it out, and yet the disease appeared to creep from limb to limb of the study before me. Alarmed, I strove to arrest it, but now the colour on the breast changed and the whole figure seemed to absorb the infection as a sponge soaks up water. Vigorously I plied palette-knife, turpentine, and scraper, thinking all the time what a séance I should hold with Duval who had sold me the canvas; but soon I noticed that it was not the canvas which was defective nor yet the colours of Edward. "It must be the turpentine," I thought angrily, "or else my eyes have become so blurred and confused by the afternoon light that I can't see straight." I called Tessie, the model. She came and leaned over my chair blowing rings of smoke into the air.

"What have you been doing to it?" she exclaimed.

"Nothing," I growled, "it must be this turpentine!"

"What a horrible colour it is now," she continued. "Do you think my flesh resembles green cheese?"

"No, I don't," I said angrily; "did you ever know me to paint like that before?"

"No, indeed!"

"Well, then!"

"It must be the turpentine, or something," she itted.

She slipped on a Japanese robe and walked to the window. I scraped and rubbed until I was tired, and finally picked up my brushes and hurled them through the canvas with a forcible expression, the tone alone of which reached Tessie's ears.

Nevertheless she promptly began: "That's it! Swear and act silly and ruin your brushes! You have been three weeks on that study, and now look! What's the good of ripping the canvas? What creatures artists are!"

I felt about as much ashamed as I usually did after such an outbreak, and I turned the ruined canvas to the wall. Tessie helped me clean my brushes, and then danced away to dress. From the screen she regaled me with bits of advice concerning whole or partial loss of temper, until, thinking, perhaps, I had been tormented sufficiently, she came out to implore me to button her waist where she could not reach it on the shoulder.

"Everything went wrong from the time you came back from the window and talked about that horrid-looking man you saw in the churchyard," she announced.

"Yes, he probably bewitched the picture," I said, yawning. I looked at my watch.

"It's after six, I know," said Tessie, adjusting her hat before the mirror.

"Yes," I replied, "I didn't mean to keep you so long." I leaned out of the window but recoiled with disgust, for the young man with the pasty face stood below in the churchyard. Tessie saw my gesture of disapproval and leaned from the window.

"Is that the man you don't like?" she whispered.

I nodded.

"I can't see his face, but he does look fat and soft. Someway or other," she continued, turning to look at me, "he reminds me of a dream,—an awful dream I once had. Or," she mused, looking down at her shapely shoes, "was it a dream after all?"

"How should I know?" I smiled.

Tessie smiled in reply.

"You were in it," she said, "so perhaps you might know something about it."

"Tessie! Tessie!" I protested, "don't you dare flatter by saying that you dream about me!"

"But I did," she insisted; "shall I tell you about it?"

"Go ahead," I replied, lighting a cigarette.

Tessie leaned back on the open window-sill and began very seriously.

"One night last winter I was lying in bed thinking about nothing at all in particular. I had been posing for you and I was tired out, yet it seemed impossible for me to sleep. I heard the bells in the city ring ten, eleven, and midnight. I must have fallen asleep about midnight because I don't hearing the bells after that. It seemed to me that I had scarcely closed my eyes when I dreamed that something impelled me to go to the window. I rose, and raising the sash leaned out. Twenty-fifth Street was deserted as far as I could see. I began to be afraid; everything outside seemed so—so black and uncomfortable. Then the sound of wheels in the distance came to my ears, and it seemed to me as though that was what I must wait for. Very slowly the wheels approached, and, finally, I could make out a vehicle moving along the street. It came nearer and nearer, and when it ed beneath my window I saw it was a hearse. Then, as I trembled with fear, the driver turned and looked straight at me. When I awoke I was standing by the open window shivering with cold, but the blackplumed hearse and the driver were gone. I dreamed this dream again in March last, and again awoke beside the open window. Last night the dream came again. You how it was raining; when I awoke, standing at the open window, my night-dress was soaked."

"But where did I come into the dream?" I asked.

"You—you were in the coffin; but you were not dead."

"In the coffin?"

"Yes."

"How did you know? Could you see me?"

"No; I only knew you were there."

"Had you been eating Welsh rarebits, or lobster salad?" I began, laughing, but the girl interrupted me with a frightened cry.

"Hello! What's up?" I said, as she shrank into the embrasure by the window.

"The—the man below in the churchyard;—he drove the hearse."

"Nonsense," I said, but Tessie's eyes were wide with terror. I went to the window and looked out. The man was gone. "Come, Tessie," I urged, "don't be foolish. You have posed too long; you are nervous."

"Do you think I could forget that face?" she murmured. "Three times I saw the hearse below my window, and every time the driver turned and looked up at me. Oh, his face was so white and—and soft? It looked dead—it looked as if it had been dead a long time."

I induced the girl to sit down and swallow a glass of Marsala. Then I sat down beside her, and tried to give her some advice.

"Look here, Tessie," I said, "you go to the country for a week or two, and you'll have no more dreams about hearses. You pose all day, and when night comes your nerves are upset. You can't keep this up. Then again, instead of going to bed when your day's work is done, you run off to picnics at Sulzer's Park, or go to the Eldorado or Coney Island, and when you come down here next morning you are fagged out. There was no real hearse. There was a soft-shell crab dream."

She smiled faintly.

"What about the man in the churchyard?"

"Oh, he's only an ordinary unhealthy, everyday creature."

"As true as my name is Tessie Reardon, I swear to you, Mr. Scott, that the face of the man below in the churchyard is the face of the man who drove the hearse!"

"What of it?" I said. "It's an honest trade."

"Then you think I did see the hearse?"

"Oh," I said diplomatically, "if you really did, it might not be unlikely that the

man below drove it. There is nothing in that."

Tessie rose, unrolled her scented handkerchief, and taking a bit of gum from a knot in the hem, placed it in her mouth. Then drawing on her gloves she offered me her hand, with a frank, "Good-night, Mr. Scott," and walked out.

The next morning, Thomas, the bell-boy, brought me the Herald and a bit of news. The church next door had been sold. I thanked Heaven for it, not that being a Catholic I had any repugnance for the congregation next door, but because my nerves were shattered by a blatant exhorter, whose every word echoed through the aisle of the church as if it had been my own rooms, and who insisted on his r's with a nasal persistence which revolted my every instinct. Then, too, there was a fiend in human shape, an organist, who reeled off some of the grand old hymns with an interpretation of his own, and I longed for the blood of a creature who could play the doxology with an amendment of minor chords which one hears only in a quartet of very young undergraduates. I believe the minister was a good man, but when he bellowed: "And the Lorrrrd said unto Moses, the Lorrrd is a man of war; the Lorrrd is his name. My wrath shall wax hot and I will kill you with the sworrrrd!" I wondered how many centuries of purgatory it would take to atone for such a sin.

"Who bought the property?" I asked Thomas.

"Nobody that I knows, sir. They do say the gent wot owns this 'ere 'Amilton flats was lookin' at it. 'E might be a bildin' more studios."

I walked to the window. The young man with the unhealthy face stood by the churchyard gate, and at the mere sight of him the same overwhelming repugnance took possession of me.

"By the way, Thomas," I said, "who is that fellow down there?"

Thomas sniffed. "That there worm, sir? 'Es night-watchman of the church, sir. 'E maikes me tired a-sittin' out all night on them steps and lookin' at you insultin' like. I'd a punched 'is 'ed, sir—beg pardon, sir—"

"Go on, Thomas."

"One night a comin' 'ome with 'Arry, the other English boy, I sees 'im a sittin' there on them steps. We 'ad Molly and Jen with us, sir, the two girls on the tray service, an' 'e looks so insultin' at us that I up and sez: 'Wat you looking hat, you fat slug?'—beg pardon, sir, but that's 'ow I sez, sir. Then 'e don't say nothin' and I sez: 'Come out and I'll punch that puddin' 'ed.' Then I hopens the gate an' goes in, but 'e don't say nothin', only looks insultin' like. Then I 'its 'im one, but, ugh! 'is 'ed was that cold and mushy it ud sicken you to touch 'im."

"What did he do then?" I asked curiously.

"'Im? Nawthin'."

"And you, Thomas?"

The young fellow flushed with embarrassment and smiled uneasily.

"Mr. Scott, sir, I ain't no coward, an' I can't make it out at all why I run. I was in the 5th Lawncers, sir, bugler at Tel-el-Kebir, an' was shot by the wells."

"You don't mean to say you ran away?"

"Yes, sir; I run."

"Why?"

"That's just what I want to know, sir. I grabbed Molly an' run, an' the rest was as frightened as I."

"But what were they frightened at?"

Thomas refused to answer for a while, but now my curiosity was aroused about the repulsive young man below and I pressed him. Three years' sojourn in America had not only modified Thomas' cockney dialect but had given him the American's fear of ridicule.

"You won't believe me, Mr. Scott, sir?"

"Yes, I will."

"You will lawf at me, sir?"

"Nonsense!"

He hesitated. "Well, sir, it's Gawd's truth that when I 'it 'im 'e grabbed me wrists, sir, and when I twisted 'is soft, mushy fist one of 'is fingers come off in me 'and."

The utter loathing and horror of Thomas' face must have been reflected in my own, for he added:

"It's orful, an' now when I see 'im I just go away. 'E maikes me hill."

When Thomas had gone I went to the window. The man stood beside the churchrailing with both hands on the gate, but I hastily retreated to my easel again, sickened and horrified, for I saw that the middle finger of his right hand was missing.

At nine o'clock Tessie appeared and vanished behind the screen with a merry "Good morning, Mr. Scott." When she had reappeared and taken her pose upon the model-stand I started a new canvas, much to her delight. She remained silent as long as I was on the drawing, but as soon as the scrape of the charcoal ceased and I took up my fixative she began to chatter.

"Oh, I had such a lovely time last night. We went to Tony Pastor's."

"Who are 'we'?" I demanded.

"Oh, Maggie, you know, Mr. Whyte's model, and Pinkie McCormick—we call her Pinkie because she's got that beautiful red hair you artists like so much—and

Lizzie Burke."

I sent a shower of spray from the fixative over the canvas, and said: "Well, go on."

"We saw Kelly and Baby Barnes the skirt-dancer and—and all the rest. I made a mash."

"Then you have gone back on me, Tessie?"

She laughed and shook her head.

"He's Lizzie Burke's brother, Ed. He's a perfect gen'l'man."

I felt constrained to give her some parental advice concerning mashing, which she took with a bright smile.

"Oh, I can take care of a strange mash," she said, examining her chewing gum, "but Ed is different. Lizzie is my best friend."

Then she related how Ed had come back from the stocking mill in Lowell, Massachusetts, to find her and Lizzie grown up, and what an accomplished young man he was, and how he thought nothing of squandering half-a-dollar for ice-cream and oysters to celebrate his entry as clerk into the woollen department of Macy's. Before she finished I began to paint, and she resumed the pose,

smiling and chattering like a sparrow. By noon I had the study fairly well rubbed in and Tessie came to look at it.

"That's better," she said.

I thought so too, and ate my lunch with a satisfied feeling that all was going well. Tessie spread her lunch on a drawing table opposite me and we drank our claret from the same bottle and lighted our cigarettes from the same match. I was very much attached to Tessie. I had watched her shoot up into a slender but exquisitely formed woman from a frail, awkward child. She had posed for me during the last three years, and among all my models she was my favourite. It would have troubled me very much indeed had she become "tough" or "fly," as the phrase goes, but I never noticed any deterioration of her manner, and felt at heart that she was all right. She and I never discussed morals at all, and I had no intention of doing so, partly because I had none myself, and partly because I knew she would do what she liked in spite of me. Still I did hope she would steer clear of complications, because I wished her well, and then also I had a selfish desire to retain the best model I had. I knew that mashing, as she termed it, had no significance with girls like Tessie, and that such things in America did not resemble in the least the same things in Paris. Yet, having lived with my eyes open, I also knew that somebody would take Tessie away some day, in one manner or another, and though I professed to myself that marriage was nonsense, I sincerely hoped that, in this case, there would be a priest at the end of the vista. I am a Catholic. When I listen to high mass, when I sign myself, I feel that everything, including myself, is more cheerful, and when I confess, it does me good. A man who lives as much alone as I do, must confess to somebody. Then, again, Sylvia was Catholic, and it was reason enough for me. But I was speaking of Tessie, which is very different. Tessie also was Catholic and much more devout than I, so, taking it all in all, I had little fear for my pretty model until she should fall in love. But then I knew that fate alone would decide her future for her, and I prayed inwardly that fate would keep her away from men like me and throw into her path nothing but Ed Burkes and Jimmy McCormicks, bless her sweet face!

Tessie sat blowing rings of smoke up to the ceiling and tinkling the ice in her tumbler.

"Do you know that I also had a dream last night?" I observed.

"Not about that man," she laughed.

"Exactly. A dream similar to yours, only much worse."

It was foolish and thoughtless of me to say this, but you know how little tact the average painter has. "I must have fallen asleep about ten o'clock," I continued, "and after a while I dreamt that I awoke. So plainly did I hear the midnight bells, the wind in the tree-branches, and the whistle of steamers from the bay, that even now I can scarcely believe I was not awake. I seemed to be lying in a box which had a glass cover. Dimly I saw the street lamps as I ed, for I must tell you, Tessie, the box in which I reclined appeared to lie in a cushioned wagon which jolted me over a stony pavement. After a while I became impatient and tried to move, but the box was too narrow. My hands were crossed on my breast, so I could not raise them to help myself. I listened and then tried to call. My voice was gone. I could hear the trample of the horses attached to the wagon, and even the breathing of the driver. Then another sound broke upon my ears like the raising of a window sash. I managed to turn my head a little, and found I could look, not only through the glass cover of my box, but also through the glass panes in the side of the covered vehicle. I saw houses, empty and silent, with neither light nor life about any of them excepting one. In that house a window was open on the first floor, and a figure all in white stood looking down into the street. It was you."

Tessie had turned her face away from me and leaned on the table with her elbow.

"I could see your face," I resumed, "and it seemed to me to be very sorrowful. Then we ed on and turned into a narrow black lane. Presently the horses stopped. I waited and waited, closing my eyes with fear and impatience, but all was silent as the grave. After what seemed to me hours, I began to feel uncomfortable. A sense that somebody was close to me made me unclose my eyes. Then I saw the white face of the hearse-driver looking at me through the coffin-lid——"

A sob from Tessie interrupted me. She was trembling like a leaf. I saw I had made an ass of myself and attempted to repair the damage.

"Why, Tess," I said, "I only told you this to show you what influence your story might have on another person's dreams. You don't suppose I really lay in a coffin, do you? What are you trembling for? Don't you see that your dream and my unreasonable dislike for that inoffensive watchman of the church simply set my brain working as soon as I fell asleep?"

She laid her head between her arms, and sobbed as if her heart would break. What a precious triple donkey I had made of myself! But I was about to break my record. I went over and put my arm about her.

"Tessie dear, forgive me," I said; "I had no business to frighten you with such nonsense. You are too sensible a girl, too good a Catholic to believe in dreams."

Her hand tightened on mine and her head fell back upon my shoulder, but she still trembled and I petted her and comforted her.

"Come, Tess, open your eyes and smile."

Her eyes opened with a slow languid movement and met mine, but their expression was so queer that I hastened to reassure her again.

"It's all humbug, Tessie; you surely are not afraid that any harm will come to you because of that."

"No," she said, but her scarlet lips quivered.

"Then, what's the matter? Are you afraid?"

"Yes. Not for myself."

"For me, then?" I demanded gaily.

"For you," she murmured in a voice almost inaudible. "I—I care for you."

At first I started to laugh, but when I understood her, a shock ed through me, and I sat like one turned to stone. This was the crowning bit of idiocy I had committed. During the moment which elapsed between her reply and my answer I thought of a thousand responses to that innocent confession. I could it by with a laugh, I could misunderstand her and assure her as to my health, I could simply point out that it was impossible she could love me. But my reply was quicker than my thoughts, and I might think and think now when it was too late,

for I had kissed her on the mouth.

That evening I took my usual walk in Washington Park, pondering over the occurrences of the day. I was thoroughly committed. There was no back out now, and I stared the future straight in the face. I was not good, not even scrupulous, but I had no idea of deceiving either myself or Tessie. The one ion of my life lay buried in the sunlit forests of Brittany. Was it buried for ever? Hope cried "No!" For three years I had been listening to the voice of Hope, and for three years I had waited for a footstep on my threshold. Had Sylvia forgotten? "No!" cried Hope.

I said that I was no good. That is true, but still I was not exactly a comic opera villain. I had led an easy-going reckless life, taking what invited me of pleasure, deploring and sometimes bitterly regretting consequences. In one thing alone, except my painting, was I serious, and that was something which lay hidden if not lost in the Breton forests.

It was too late for me to regret what had occurred during the day. Whatever it had been, pity, a sudden tenderness for sorrow, or the more brutal instinct of gratified vanity, it was all the same now, and unless I wished to bruise an innocent heart, my path lay marked before me. The fire and strength, the depth of ion of a love which I had never even suspected, with all my imagined experience in the world, left me no alternative but to respond or send her away. Whether because I am so cowardly about giving pain to others, or whether it was that I have little of the gloomy Puritan in me, I do not know, but I shrank from disclaiming responsibility for that thoughtless kiss, and in fact had no time to do so before the gates of her heart opened and the flood poured forth. Others who habitually do their duty and find a sullen satisfaction in making themselves and everybody else unhappy, might have withstood it. I did not. I dared not. After the storm had abated I did tell her that she might better have loved Ed Burke and worn a plain gold ring, but she would not hear of it, and I thought perhaps as long as she had decided to love somebody she could not marry, it had better be me. I, at least, could treat her with an intelligent affection, and whenever she

became tired of her infatuation she could go none the worse for it. For I was decided on that point although I knew how hard it would be. I ed the usual termination of Platonic liaisons, and thought how disgusted I had been whenever I heard of one. I knew I was undertaking a great deal for so unscrupulous a man as I was, and I dreamed the future, but never for one moment did I doubt that she was safe with me. Had it been anybody but Tessie I should not have bothered my head about scruples. For it did not occur to me to sacrifice Tessie as I would have sacrificed a woman of the world. I looked the future squarely in the face and saw the several probable endings to the affair. She would either tire of the whole thing, or become so unhappy that I should have either to marry her or go away. If I married her we would be unhappy. I with a wife unsuited to me, and she with a husband unsuitable for any woman. For my past life could scarcely entitle me to marry. If I went away she might either fall ill, recover, and marry some Eddie Burke, or she might recklessly or deliberately go and do something foolish. On the other hand, if she tired of me, then her whole life would be before her with beautiful vistas of Eddie Burkes and marriage rings and twins and Harlem flats and Heaven knows what. As I strolled along through the trees by the Washington Arch, I decided that she should find a substantial friend in me, anyway, and the future could take care of itself. Then I went into the house and put on my evening dress, for the little faintly-perfumed note on my dresser said, "Have a cab at the stage door at eleven," and the note was signed "Edith Carmichel, Metropolitan Theatre."

I took supper that night, or rather we took supper, Miss Carmichel and I, at Solari's, and the dawn was just beginning to gild the cross on the Memorial Church as I entered Washington Square after leaving Edith at the Brunswick. There was not a soul in the park as I ed along the trees and took the walk which leads from the Garibaldi statue to the Hamilton Apartment House, but as I ed the churchyard I saw a figure sitting on the stone steps. In spite of myself a chill crept over me at the sight of the white puffy face, and I hastened to . Then he said something which might have been addressed to me or might merely have been a mutter to himself, but a sudden furious anger flamed up within me that such a creature should address me. For an instant I felt like wheeling about and smashing my stick over his head, but I walked on, and entering the Hamilton went to my apartment. For some time I tossed about the bed trying to get the sound of his voice out of my ears, but could not. It filled my head, that muttering sound, like thick oily smoke from a fat-rendering vat or an odour of noisome

decay. And as I lay and tossed about, the voice in my ears seemed more distinct, and I began to understand the words he had muttered. They came to me slowly as if I had forgotten them, and at last I could make some sense out of the sounds. It was this:

"Have you found the Yellow Sign?"

"Have you found the Yellow Sign?"

"Have you found the Yellow Sign?"

I was furious. What did he mean by that? Then with a curse upon him and his I rolled over and went to sleep, but when I awoke later I looked pale and haggard, for I had dreamed the dream of the night before, and it troubled me more than I cared to think.

I dressed and went down into my studio. Tessie sat by the window, but as I came in she rose and put both arms around my neck for an innocent kiss. She looked so sweet and dainty that I kissed her again and then sat down before the easel.

"Hello! Where's the study I began yesterday?" I asked.

Tessie looked conscious, but did not answer. I began to hunt among the piles of canvases, saying, "Hurry up, Tess, and get ready; we must take advantage of the morning light."

When at last I gave up the search among the other canvases and turned to look around the room for the missing study I noticed Tessie standing by the screen with her clothes still on.

"What's the matter," I asked, "don't you feel well?"

"Yes."

"Then hurry."

"Do you want me to pose as—as I have always posed?"

Then I understood. Here was a new complication. I had lost, of course, the best nude model I had ever seen. I looked at Tessie. Her face was scarlet. Alas! Alas! We had eaten of the tree of knowledge, and Eden and native innocence were dreams of the past—I mean for her.

I suppose she noticed the disappointment on my face, for she said: "I will pose if you wish. The study is behind the screen here where I put it."

"No," I said, "we will begin something new;" and I went into my wardrobe and picked out a Moorish costume which fairly blazed with tinsel. It was a genuine costume, and Tessie retired to the screen with it enchanted. When she came forth again I was astonished. Her long black hair was bound above her forehead with a circlet of turquoises, and the ends, curled about her glittering girdle. Her feet were encased in the embroidered pointed slippers and the skirt of her costume,

curiously wrought with arabesques in silver, fell to her ankles. The deep metallic blue vest embroidered with silver and the short Mauresque jacket spangled and sewn with turquoises became her wonderfully. She came up to me and held up her face smiling. I slipped my hand into my pocket, and drawing out a gold chain with a cross attached, dropped it over her head.

"It's yours, Tessie."

"Mine?" she faltered.

"Yours. Now go and pose," Then with a radiant smile she ran behind the screen and presently reappeared with a little box on which was written my name.

"I had intended to give it to you when I went home to-night," she said, "but I can't wait now."

I opened the box. On the pink cotton inside lay a clasp of black onyx, on which was inlaid a curious symbol or letter in gold. It was neither Arabic nor Chinese, nor, as I found afterwards, did it belong to any human script.

"It's all I had to give you for a keepsake," she said timidly.

I was annoyed, but I told her how much I should prize it, and promised to wear it always. She fastened it on my coat beneath the lapel.

"How foolish, Tess, to go and buy me such a beautiful thing as this," I said.

"I did not buy it," she laughed.

"Where did you get it?"

Then she told me how she had found it one day while coming from the Aquarium in the Battery, how she had d it and watched the papers, but at last gave up all hopes of finding the owner.

"That was last winter," she said, "the very day I had the first horrid dream about the hearse."

I ed my dream of the previous night but said nothing, and presently my charcoal was flying over a new canvas, and Tessie stood motionless on the model-stand.

III

The day following was a disastrous one for me. While moving a framed canvas from one easel to another my foot slipped on the polished floor, and I fell heavily on both wrists. They were so badly sprained that it was useless to attempt to hold a brush, and I was obliged to wander about the studio, glaring at unfinished drawings and sketches, until despair seized me and I sat down to smoke and twiddle my thumbs with rage. The rain blew against the windows and rattled on the roof of the church, driving me into a nervous fit with its interminable patter. Tessie sat sewing by the window, and every now and then raised her head and looked at me with such innocent comion that I began to feel ashamed of my irritation and looked about for something to occupy me. I had read all the papers and all the books in the library, but for the sake of something to do I went to the bookcases and shoved them open with my elbow. I knew every volume by its colour and examined them all, ing slowly around the library and whistling to keep up my spirits. I was turning to go into the dining-room when my eye fell upon a book bound in serpent skin, standing in a corner of the top shelf of the last bookcase. I did not it, and from the floor could not decipher the pale lettering on the back, so I went to the smoking-room and called Tessie. She came in from the studio and climbed up to reach the book.

"What is it?" I asked.

"The King in Yellow."

I was dumfounded. Who had placed it there? How came it in my rooms? I had long ago decided that I should never open that book, and nothing on earth could have persuaded me to buy it. Fearful lest curiosity might tempt me to open it, I had never even looked at it in book-stores. If I ever had had any curiosity to read it, the awful tragedy of young Castaigne, whom I knew, prevented me from

exploring its wicked pages. I had always refused to listen to any description of it, and indeed, nobody ever ventured to discuss the second part aloud, so I had absolutely no knowledge of what those leaves might reveal. I stared at the poisonous mottled binding as I would at a snake.

"Don't touch it, Tessie," I said; "come down."

Of course my onition was enough to arouse her curiosity, and before I could prevent it she took the book and, laughing, danced off into the studio with it. I called to her, but she slipped away with a tormenting smile at my helpless hands, and I followed her with some impatience.

"Tessie!" I cried, entering the library, "listen, I am serious. Put that book away. I do not wish you to open it!" The library was empty. I went into both drawingrooms, then into the bedrooms, laundry, kitchen, and finally returned to the library and began a systematic search. She had hidden herself so well that it was half-an-hour later when I discovered her crouching white and silent by the latticed window in the store-room above. At the first glance I saw she had been punished for her foolishness. The King in Yellow lay at her feet, but the book was open at the second part. I looked at Tessie and saw it was too late. She had opened The King in Yellow. Then I took her by the hand and led her into the studio. She seemed dazed, and when I told her to lie down on the sofa she obeyed me without a word. After a while she closed her eyes and her breathing became regular and deep, but I could not determine whether or not she slept. For a long while I sat silently beside her, but she neither stirred nor spoke, and at last I rose, and, entering the unused store-room, took the book in my least injured hand. It seemed heavy as lead, but I carried it into the studio again, and sitting down on the rug beside the sofa, opened it and read it through from beginning to end.

When, faint with excess of my emotions, I dropped the volume and leaned wearily back against the sofa, Tessie opened her eyes and looked at me…

We had been speaking for some time in a dull monotonous strain before I realized that we were discussing The King in Yellow. Oh the sin of writing such words,—words which are clear as crystal, limpid and musical as bubbling springs, words which sparkle and glow like the poisoned diamonds of the Medicis! Oh the wickedness, the hopeless damnation of a soul who could fascinate and paralyze human creatures with such words,—words understood by the ignorant and wise alike, words which are more precious than jewels, more soothing than music, more awful than death!

We talked on, unmindful of the gathering shadows, and she was begging me to throw away the clasp of black onyx quaintly inlaid with what we now knew to be the Yellow Sign. I never shall know why I refused, though even at this hour, here in my bedroom as I write this confession, I should be glad to know what it was that prevented me from tearing the Yellow Sign from my breast and casting it into the fire. I am sure I wished to do so, and yet Tessie pleaded with me in vain. Night fell and the hours dragged on, but still we murmured to each other of the King and the Pallid Mask, and midnight sounded from the misty spires in the fog-wrapped city. We spoke of Hastur and of Cassilda, while outside the fog rolled against the blank window-panes as the cloud waves roll and break on the shores of Hali.

The house was very silent now, and not a sound came up from the misty streets. Tessie lay among the cushions, her face a grey blot in the gloom, but her hands were clasped in mine, and I knew that she knew and read my thoughts as I read hers, for we had understood the mystery of the Hyades and the Phantom of Truth was laid. Then as we answered each other, swiftly, silently, thought on thought, the shadows stirred in the gloom , and far in the distant streets we heard a sound. Nearer and nearer it came, the dull crunching of wheels, nearer and yet nearer, and now, outside before the door it ceased, and I dragged myself to the window and saw a black-plumed hearse. The gate below opened and shut, and I crept shaking to my door and bolted it, but I knew no bolts, no locks, could keep that creature out who was coming for the Yellow Sign. And now I heard him moving very softly along the hall. Now he was at the door, and the bolts rotted at

his touch. Now he had entered. With eyes starting from my head I peered into the darkness, but when he came into the room I did not see him. It was only when I felt him envelope me in his cold soft grasp that I cried out and struggled with deadly fury, but my hands were useless and he tore the onyx clasp from my coat and struck me full in the face. Then, as I fell, I heard Tessie's soft cry and her spirit fled: and even while falling I longed to follow her, for I knew that the King in Yellow had opened his tattered mantle and there was only God to cry to now.

I could tell more, but I cannot see what help it will be to the world. As for me, I am past human help or hope. As I lie here, writing, careless even whether or not I die before I finish, I can see the doctor gathering up his powders and phials with a vague gesture to the good priest beside me, which I understand.

They will be very curious to know the tragedy—they of the outside world who write books and print millions of newspapers, but I shall write no more, and the father confessor will seal my last words with the seal of sanctity when his holy office is done. They of the outside world may send their creatures into wrecked homes and death-smitten firesides, and their newspapers will batten on blood and tears, but with me their spies must halt before the confessional. They know that Tessie is dead and that I am dying. They know how the people in the house, aroused by an infernal scream, rushed into my room and found one living and two dead, but they do not know what I shall tell them now; they do not know that the doctor said as he pointed to a horrible decomposed heap on the floor— the livid corpse of the watchman from the church: "I have no theory, no explanation. That man must have been dead for months!"

I think I am dying. I wish the priest would—

Ci sono diversi tipi di morte - alcune in cui il corpo rimane; altre in cui quietamente svanisce con lo spirito. Questo in genere succede in solitudine (tale è la volontà di Dio), e non vedendone la fine, diciamo che la persona se n’è andata, o è partita per un lungo viaggio - che in effetti è vero; ma a volte succede sotto gli occhi di molti, come abbondanti testimonianze dimostrano. In un certo tipo di morte lo spirito muore, e lo vediamo succedere quando ancora il corpo è nel pieno vigore. A volte, come veritabilmente attestato, lo spirito muore con il corpo ma dopo un certo periodo è resuscitato, anche se il corpo è ormai decaduto.

Meditando queste parole di Hali (che Dio lo riposi in pace) e domandandomi il loro pieno significato come colui che, avendo un indizio, ancora dubiti se ci sia qualcosa di altro dietro, diverso da quello che ha scorto, notai che mi ero allontanato di parecchio, finché una raffica di vento freddo, colpendomi in faccia, risvegliò in me la consapevolezza di dove mi trovavo. Osservai con stupore che tutto sembrava sconosciuto. Da ogni parte intorno a me si stendeva una pianura brulla e desolata, ricoperta da erbe alte e apite, che frusciavano e fischiavano nel vento d'autunno, il Cielo solo sa con quale tono misterioso e inquietante. Sporgenti, a lunghi intervalli sopra di esse, c’erano delle rocce stranamente sagomate e di colore cupo, che sembravano comprendersi una con l'altra e scambiarsi sguardi di un eloquente significato sinistro, come se avessero sollevato le loro teste per guardare l’esito di qualche evento imprevisto. Alcuni alberi inariditi qua e là sembravano i capi di una cospirazione maligna in silenziosa attesa.

Il giorno, pensai, doveva essere molto avanzato, sebbene il sole fosse invisibile; e anche se consapevole che l'aria fosse gelida, la coscienza di questo fatto era piuttosto più mentale che fisica - infatti non sentivo alcuna sensazione di disagio. Su tutto il paesaggio un lugubre baldacchino di basse nubi color piombo era appeso come una maledizione visibile. In tutto questo si sentiva un senso di minaccia e presagio - un tocco di malvagità, un indizio di sventura. Non c’erano uccelli, né bestie o insetti. Il vento sospirava tra i rami spogli degli alberi morti e l'erba spenta era china a sussurrare il suo terribile segreto alla terra; ma nessun altro suono o movimento rompeva la quiete terribile di quel luogo lugubre.

Tra l’erba vidi diverse pietre logorate dalle intemperie, evidentemente modellate da mano umana. Erano rotte, coperte di muschio e metà infossate nella terra. Alcune giacevano distese, alcune erano inclinate a varie angolazioni, nessuna era verticale. Erano ovviamente lapidi, anche se le tombe stesse non esistevano più, sia come tumuli che avvallamenti; gli anni avevano livellato tutto. Sparsi qua e là blocchi più massicci mostravano dove qualche tomba sfarzosa o un ambizioso monumento aveva una volta lanciato la sua debole sfida all’oblio. Così antiche sembravano queste reliquie, vestigia di vanità e memoriali di affetto e di pietà, così malconce e logore e sfregiate - così trascurato, abbandonato e dimenticato il posto, che non potei evitare di pensare a me stesso come scopritore della necropoli di un popolo preistorico il cui nome era ormai estinto da tempo immemorabile.

Immerso in queste riflessioni, per qualche tempo non feci caso alle mie azioni, ma ben presto pensai: "Come sono arrivato fin qui?"

Un momento di riflessione sembrò rendere tutto questo chiaro e spiegarmi allo stesso tempo, anche se in un modo inquietante, il carattere singolare con cui la mia fantasia aveva investito tutto quello che avevo visto o sentito. Ero malato.

Mi ricordavo ora che ero stato prostrato da una febbre improvvisa, e che la mia famiglia mi aveva detto che nei periodi di delirio avevo sempre invocato libertà e aria, ed ero stato trattenuto con la forza a letto per evitare la mia fuga all’aperto. Avevo dunque eluso la vigilanza dei miei assistenti e avevo vagato fino a - a dove? Non riuscivo a capirlo. Chiaramente ero a notevole distanza dalla città dove vivevo – l’antica e famosa città di Carcosa.

Ovunque nessun segno di vita umana era visibili né udibile; nessun fumo che saliva, nessun abbaiare di cani da guardia, non il muggire dei bovini, non le grida dei bambini che giocavano - nient'altro che quel triste luogo di sepoltura, con la sua aria di mistero e terrore, frutto del mio cervello in disordine. Ricominciavo a delirare, in quel luogo dove non potevo chiedere aiuto umano? Non era forse tutta un'illusione della mia follia? Chiamai a voce alta i nomi di mia moglie e dei miei figli, allungai le mani cercandoli, anche mentre camminavo tra le pietre cadenti e l’erba apita.

Un rumore dietro di me mi fece voltare. Un animale selvatico - una lince - si stava avvicinando. Pensai: se crollo qui, in questo deserto - se mi ritorna la febbre e svengo, questa bestia mi sarà alla gola. Mi lanciai urlando verso di lei. Mi trotterellò tranquillamente a poca distanza e sparì dietro una roccia.

Un attimo dopo la testa di un uomo apparve all’improvviso, come sbucasse dalla terra, a breve distanza. Stava risalendo il pendio più lontano di una bassa collina la cui cima era difficile da distinguere dal livello generale del suolo. Tutta la sua figura intera presto mi apparve contro lo sfondo grigio delle nuvole. Era mezzo nudo e metà rivestito di pelli. Aveva i capelli arruffati, la barba lunga e ispida. In una mano teneva arco e freccia; l'altra teneva una torcia ardente che lasciava una lunga scia di fumo nero. Camminava lentamente e con cautela, come se temesse di cadere in qualche fossa nascosta dall'erba alta. Questa strana apparizione mi sorprese, ma non mi allarmò, e facendomi avanti per fermarlo, mi trovai faccia a faccia con lui, e gli rivolsi il saluto consueto, "Dio vi protegga."

Lui non mi prestò alcuna attenzione, né arrestò il o.

"Buon straniero," continuai, "sono malato e mi sono perso. Indirizzatemi, vi supplico, verso Carcosa. "

L'uomo eruppe in un canto barbaro in una lingua sconosciuta, mi ò oltre e si allontanò.

Una civetta sul ramo di un albero cadente cantò il suo verso tetro e le fu risposto da un altra in lontananza. Guardando verso l'alto, vidi attraverso un improvviso squarcio tra le nuvole Aldebaran e le Iadi! In tutto questo c'era un accenno alla notte - la lince, l'uomo con la torcia, la civetta. Eppure vedevo – vedevo anche le stelle in assenza di buio. Vedevo, ma a quanto pare non ero né visto né sentito. Sotto quale incantesimo terribile ero tenuto?

Mi sedetti alla base di un grande albero, a considerare seriamente cosa fosse meglio fare. Che fossi pazzo non potevo che averne certezza, eppure riconoscevo un dubbio in questa convinzione. Di febbre non avevo traccia. Avevo invece un senso di euforia e vigore del tutto sconosciuti - un senso di esaltazione sia mentale che fisica. Tutti i miei sensi sembravano desti; sentivo l'aria come una sostanza pesante e potevo ascoltare il silenzio.

Una grossa radice dell'albero gigante, contro il cui tronco mi ero seduto, teneva rinchiusa nella sua stretta una lastra di pietra, una parte della quale si spingeva in una cavità formata da un'altra radice. La pietra era stata quindi in parte protetta dalle intemperie, anche se piuttosto erosa. I suoi bordi erano consumati, i suoi angoli smussati, la sua superficie profondamente solcata e scrostata. Scintillanti particelle di mica erano visibili tutto intorno – le vestigia della sua decomposizione. Questa pietra aveva senza dubbio segnato la tomba da cui l'albero era nato secoli fa. Le invadenti radici dell'albero avevano espropriato la

tomba e fatto prigioniera la pietra.

Un vento improvviso spinse via alcune foglie secche e ramoscelli dalla faccia superiore della pietra; vidi le lettere in bassorilievo di un'iscrizione e mi chinai a leggerla. Dio in cielo! Il mio nome per intero! - La data della mia nascita! - La data della mia morte!

Un raggio di luce orizzontale illuminò tutto il lato dell'albero, mentre balzavo in piedi in preda al terrore. Il sole stava sorgendo nel roseo oriente. Rimasi in piedi tra l'albero e il suo ampio disco rosso – ma nessuna ombra oscurava il tronco!

Un coro di lupi ululanti salutò l'alba. Li vidi accovacciati, singolarmente e in gruppo, sulle cime dei monticelli irregolari e sui tumuli che riempivano il mio panorama desolato e si estendevano fino all'orizzonte. E allora capii che quelle erano le rovine dell’antica e famosa città di Carcosa.

Questi sono i fatti narrati al medium Bayrolles dallo spirito di Hoseib Alar Robardin.

AN INHABITANT OF CARCOSA by Ambrose Bierce (1886)

For there be divers sorts of death--some wherein the body remaineth; and in some it vanisheth quite away with the spirit. This commonly occurreth only in solitude (such is God's will) and, none seeing the end, we say the man is lost, or gone on a long journey--which indeed he hath; but sometimes it hath happened in sight of many, as abundant testimony showeth. In one kind of death the spirit also dieth, and this it hath been known to do while yet the body was in vigour for many years. Sometimes, as is veritably attested, it dieth with the body, but after a season is raised up again in that place where the body did decay.

Pondering these words of Hali (whom God rest) and questioning their full meaning, as one who, having an intimation, yet doubts if there be not something behind, other than that which he has discerned, I noted not whither I had strayed until a sudden chill wind striking my face revived in me a sense of my surroundings. I observed with astonishment that everything seemed unfamiliar. On every side of me stretched a bleak and desolate expanse of plain, covered with a tall overgrowth of sere grass, which rustled and whistled in the autumn wind with Heaven knows what mysterious and disquieting suggestion. Protruded at long intervals above it, stood strangely shaped and sombrecoloured rocks, which seemed to have an understanding with one another and to exchange looks of uncomfortable significance, as if they had reared their heads to watch the issue of some foreseen event.

A few blasted trees here and there appeared as leaders in this malevolent conspiracy of silent expectation. The day, I thought, must be far advanced,

though the sun was invisible; and although sensible that the air was raw and chill my consciousness of that fact was rather mental than physical--I had no feeling of discomfort. Over all the dismal landscape a canopy of low, lead-coloured clouds hung like a visible curse.

In all this there was a menace and a portent--a hint of evil, an intimation of doom. Bird, beast, or insect there was none. The wind sighed in the bare branches of the dead trees and the grey grass bent to whisper its dread secret to the earth; but no other sound nor motion broke the awful repose of that dismal place.

I observed in the herbage a number of weatherworn stones, evidently shaped with tools. They were broken, covered with moss and half sunken in the earth. Some lay prostrate, some leaned at various angles, none was vertical. They were obviously headstones of graves, though the graves themselves no longer existed as either mounds or depressions; the years had levelled all. Scattered here and there, more massive blocks showed where some pompous tomb or ambitious monument had once flung its feeble defiance at oblivion. So old seemed these relics, these vestiges of vanity and memorials of affection and piety, so battered and worn and stained --so neglected, deserted, forgotten the place, that I could not help thinking myself the discoverer of the burial-ground of a prehistoric race of men whose very name was long extinct.

Filled with these reflections, I was for some time heedless of the sequence of my own experiences, but soon I thought, 'How came I hither?'

A moment's reflection seemed to make this all clear and explain at the same time, though in a disquieting way, the singular character with which my fancy had invested all that I saw or heard. I was ill. I ed now that I had been prostrated by a sudden fever, and that my family had told me that in my periods of delirium I had constantly cried out for liberty and air, and had been held in bed to prevent my escape out-of-doors. Now I had eluded the vigilance of my

attendants and had wandered hither to--to where? I could not conjecture. Clearly I was at a considerable distance from the city where I dwelt--the ancient and famous city of Carcosa.

No signs of human life were anywhere visible nor audible; no rising smoke, no watch-dog's bark, no lowing of cattle, no shouts of children at play-nothing but that dismal burial-place, with its air of mystery and dread, due to my own disordered brain. Was I not becoming again delirious, there beyond human aid? Was it not indeed all an illusion of my madness? I called aloud the names of my wives and sons, reached out my hands in search of theirs, even as I walked among the crumbling stones and in the withered grass.

A noise behind me caused me to turn about. A wild animal--a lynx--was approaching. The thought came to me: if I break down here in the desert--if the fever return and I fail, this beast will be at my throat. I sprang toward it, shouting. It trotted tranquilly by within a hand's-breadth of me and disappeared behind a rock.

A moment later a man's head appeared to rise out of the ground a short distance away. He was ascending the farther slope of a low hill whose crest was hardly to be distinguished from the general level. His whole figure soon came into view against the background of grey cloud. He was half naked, half clad in skins. His hair was unkempt, his beard long and ragged. In one hand he carried a bow and arrow; the other held a blazing torch with a long trail of black smoke. He walked slowly and with caution, as if he feared falling into some open grave concealed by the tall grass. This strange apparition surprised but did not alarm, and taking such a course as to intercept him I met him almost face to face, accosting him with the familiar salutation, 'God keep you.'

He gave no heed, nor did he arrest his pace.

'Good stranger,' I continued, 'I am ill and lost. Direct me, I beseech you, to Carcosa.'

The man broke into a barbarous chant in an unknown tongue, ing on and away.

An owl on the branch of a decayed tree hooted dismally and was answered by another in the distance. Looking upward, I saw through a sudden rift in the clouds Aldebaran and the Hyades! In all this there was a hint of night--the lynx, the man with the torch, the owl. Yet I saw--I saw even the stars in absence of the darkness. I saw, but was apparently not seen nor heard. Under what awful spell did I exist?

I seated myself at the root of a great tree, seriously to consider what it were best to do. That I was mad I could no longer doubt, yet recognized a ground of doubt in the conviction. Of fever I had no trace. I had, withal, a sense of exhilaration and vigour altogether unknown to me--a feeling of mental and physical exaltation. My senses seemed all alert; I could feel the air as a ponderous substance; I could hear the silence.

A great root of the giant tree against whose trunk I leaned as I sat held enclosed in its grasp a slab of stone, a part of which protruded into a recess formed by another root. The stone was thus partly protected from the weather, though greatly decomposed. Its edges were worn round, its corners eaten away, its surface deeply furrowed and scaled. Glittering particles of mica were visible in the earth about it-vestiges of its decomposition. This stone had apparently marked the grave out of which the tree had sprung ages ago. The tree's exacting roots had robbed the grave and made the stone a prisoner.

A sudden wind pushed some dry leaves and twigs from the uppermost face of the

stone; I saw the lowrelief letters of an inscription and bent to read it.

God in heaven! my name in full!--the date of my birth!--the date of my death!

A level shaft of light illuminated the whole side of the tree as I sprang to my feet in terror. The sun was rising in the rosy east. I stood between the tree and his broad red disk--no shadow darkened the trunk!

A chorus of howling wolves saluted the dawn. I saw them sitting on their haunches, singly and in groups, on the summits of irregular mounds and tumuli filling a half of my desert prospect and extending to the horizon. And then I knew that these were ruins of the ancient and famous city of Carcosa.

Such are the facts imparted to the medium Bayrolles by the spirit Hoseib Alar Robardin.
