El programa de gramática y vocabulario está hecho a la medida, no solo según los requisitos de las autoridades educativas sino al nivel y al tiempo disponible de los alumnos en un año académico. El lenguaje de los textos de lectura y comprensión oral está graduado cuidadosamente para ser accesible para el nivel y evitar así que los alumnos se sientan amenazados o desmotivados por materiales que creen que no pueden comprender. Las páginas de Speaking y Writing están estructuradas de tal forma que puedan guiar a los alumnos paso a paso a través de las tareas necesarias para alcanzar el objetivo final de la página. Impacto visual La cultura juvenil hoy en día está orientada a lo visual, y los adolescentes se aburren fácilmente con material que no sea visualmente atractivo. El material gráfico de Smart Planet se ha diseñado para atraer a alumnos de secundaria. Cada unidad comienza con una gran imagen de impacto diseñada para llamar la atención de los alumnos y animarlos a involucrarse en el contenido de la unidad. Los textos de lectura van acompañados de material gráfico que arrastra a los alumnos a la página y los estimula para querer saber de qué trata el texto, y en las páginas de vocabulario las palabras nuevas se ilustran de forma divertida y visualmente memorable.

Orientado a alumnos españoles Para aprender con éxito, los alumnos jóvenes tienen que sentir que el material es relevante para sus necesidades. Smart Planet está escrito para las necesidades específicas de los alumnos españoles, con referencias culturales y temas específicamente seleccionados dentro de la esfera de interés y conocimientos del adolescente español. Además, se centra claramente en errores gramaticales y de vocabulario comunes entre hispanohablantes, tomados del Cambridge English Corpus. El Cambridge English Corpus es una recopilación de billones de palabras del inglés hablado y escrito. Incluye el Learner Corpus, un banco único de exámenes realizados por estudiantes de todo el mundo. El Cambridge Learner Corpus ha resultado ser un recurso excelente para investigar y redactar cursos de inglés, porque proporciona información clara sobre los errores típicos, gramaticales y léxicos, que cometen los estudiantes de todo el mundo. Para Smart Planet, la investigación se llevó a cabo sobre el plan de estudios lingüístico usando el Cambridge Learner Corpus con filtros establecidos para encontrar solo los errores cometidos por estudiantes hispanohablantes que han realizado el examen Cambridge English: KEY. Los resultados de esta investigación se convirtieron en el punto de partida para la selección de cada error en el que había que centrarse. Utilizando el Cambridge Learner Corpus, nos aseguramos de que las áreas elegidas se basan en errores reales cometidos por estudiantes de inglés hispanohablantes. Además, el curso se centra en errores de pronunciación cometidos por los hispanohablantes. El Cambridge Learner Corpus no incluye ejemplos de lenguaje hablado, por lo que los autores, que son residentes en España desde hace tiempo, han usado su propia experiencia, junto con los descubrimientos de la investigación académica, para construir el plan de pronunciación. Por último, la experiencia de los autores y su conocimiento cultural de España han ayudado a conformar muchos de los temas, referencias culturales y materias que hay en Smart Planet. La intención es ayudar a comprender mejor y generar interés y motivación entre los estudiantes hispanohablantes.

Componentes del curso Para el alumno Student’s Book El Student’s Book consta de 128 páginas y contiene: • una Starter Unit de cinco páginas, que los profesores pueden utilizar para repasar el lenguaje clave del nivel anterior de Smart Planet. El DVD-ROM también contiene ejercicios para autocorregir y que los alumnos pueden hacer mientras ven los vídeos. Hay cuatro fascinantes vídeos de Discovery Education™ en cada unidad del Student’s Book. Los vídeos de Discovery Education™ acompañan a los principales textos de lectura y ofrecen inspiración e imágenes de documentales auténticos de todo el mundo. Los alumnos deben entrar en www. smartplanetapps.es y descargar la aplicación Smart Planet Augmented Reality para su móvil o tablet. Después tienen que abrir la aplicación y sacar una foto de la primera página de cada unidad del Student’s Book – la página con el icono de AR – para acceder al contenido.

Test Generator Los profesores pueden crear sus propios materiales de exámenes adaptados a las necesidades de sus alumnos utilizando el Test generator. Pueden seleccionar actividades específicas para hacer exámenes de vocabulario, gramática y destrezas desde cualquier punto del curso, ofreciendo a los profesores la posibilidad de producir exámenes específicos o acumulativos pulsando un botón. El Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas (MCER) y Smart Planet El Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las lenguas (MCER) es un conjunto de directrices que se utilizan para describir los logros de los estudiantes de idiomas extranjeros de toda Europa. Su objetivo principal es ofrecer un método para evaluar a los estudiantes que pueda aplicarse a todas las lenguas de Europa. Este método se basa en un conjunto de ‘competencias lingüísticas’ (también llamadas Can do statements), que los estudiantes pueden esperar alcanzar en cada etapa de su aprendizaje. Las competencias lingüísticas se dividen en seis niveles: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 y C2. Cada nivel contiene un conjunto de objetivos prácticos que los alumnos deben poder demostrar durante la evaluación.

El plan de estudios español de secundaria cubre aproximadamente los primeros tres niveles, empezando con un nivel alto de A1 y llegando hasta el B1. O sea, que al final de la Secundaria los alumnos deben ser capaces de dominar todas las competencias lingüísticas desde el nivel A1 hasta parte del B1. Los textos y actividades de comprensión oral y comprensión y comunicación escrita de Smart Planet 2 han sido elegidos cuidadosamente para cubrir las competencias lingüísticas desde el nivel A1+ hasta el nivel A2 del MCER. Las competencias se relacionan con el contenido del Student’s Book 2 en la tabla, como referencia y ayuda para los profesores a la hora de evaluar.

Competencias básicas Las competencias básicas son una combinación de conocimientos, destrezas y actitudes diseñadas para ayudar a los jóvenes a desarrollar herramientas que puedan usar en el entorno académico y en un contexto social más amplio. Sixty-five years ago, the world’s first modern computer ‘was born’. ‘Baby’, as scientists called it, was enormous. It filled an entire room and needed a team of people to operate it. Computers slowly became smaller over the next 60 years so that they could fit on your table, on your knee in front of you, and finally in one hand. Look at your mobile phone and you will see a small personal computer before your eyes. So what’s next for computers? Will they get even smaller?! Most scientists believe they will. Accessories like the keyboard and mouse are disappearing from modern computers with the invention of smartphones and touch-screen technology. Professor Brian David Johnson believes computers will be everywhere in the future because computer chips are becoming smaller and more advanced: ‘In the future, all objects will become computers: your teacup, the table, anything,’ he says.

Computers are important to us all; they help us to communicate, organise our lives, entertain ourselves, and complete our day-to-day tasks at work. Supercomputers can help scientists study and recreate diseases and predict climate change. They can also simulate tsunamis and earthquakes, test the aerodynamics of new aeroplanes, and even simulate the Big Bang to help scientists study the origins of the universe! What makes a computer a supercomputer is its huge computing power. This power is created by including many Us in a single computer. The U, or Central Processing Unit, is the brain of the computer. It’s a very complex electronic circuit that processes information with incredible speed and accuracy. As for the future, experts believe that one day computer scientists will build the ultimate supercomputer – a human brain.

Imagine going into town to go shopping. You arrive at the bus station but the next bus is in half an hour! The shopping centre is a 20-minute walk uphill, but you have a better idea. You get in a pod – a small car. You can’t drive, but that’s no problem, because the pod doesn’t need a driver. It has a computer! There’s a screen, so you can go on the Internet or play computer games. Is this science fiction? No, it will soon be reality. A hundred driverless pods will soon be on the road in the British city of Milton Keynes. They will travel on the pavement, but their special computer program will use GPS, high definition cameras and sensors to navigate safely. Each pod can carry two people and travel at a maximum speed of about 19 km/h. They save time and are better for the environment because they don’t cause pollution. Google is also developing a ‘selfpollution driving car’ by adapting normal hybrid cars.

T: OK, my first question is: why does the producer usually receive the Oscar for Best Film? Why isn’t it the director? DG: That’s a good question! That’s because the producer’s role in making a film is very big. The director is important too, but the producer is responsible for the organisation of the project, not only filming. T: So what exactly does a producer do? DG: Well, there are three main parts to a producer’s job: pre-production, production, and post production. Pre-production is before the film, when we prepare and plan the project. First a producer finds an idea for the film. It can be from a book, or a true story. Then the producer finds a person to write the film. T: What about the director? DG: That’s my job too. I help find a director, actors, and the locations and lots of other things too. T: And where does the money come from? From you? DG: Oh no! The producer doesn’t usually use their own money for a film. In Hollywood, there are people called executive producers. They use their own money or help to find the money from other people. T: So first you do pre-production. What about production? DG: That’s when we start filming, with the director and the actors. Production can take from a few months to several years! When we finish production, then postproduction starts. T: What’s post production? DG: Post production is everything after filming finishes. The editors put the film together and add things like sound, music and any special effects. It can sometimes be two years before a film is ready for the cinema. T: Wow, it’s a really complicated job! Vídeo en el aula: Ben Goldstein ¿Por qué vídeo? Los vídeos se están convirtiendo en el primer medido de presentación de información en los medios digitales globales. Recientes estadísticas sugieren que el 90% del tráfico de internet está basado en vídeos. Debido a ello, enseñar un idioma solo mediante textos e imágenes puede no reflejar del todo la forma en que los adolescentes de hoy se comunican y reciben y transmiten información. Debido al creciente predominio del vídeo en todos los ámbitos de la vida, estar visualmente alfabetizado y saber cómo procesar datos visuales es una destreza cada vez más necesaria en el mundo digital de hoy. Así que, ¿por qué no usar el vídeo en la clase de idiomas?

Cómo explotar el vídeo El vídeo puede explotarse de muchas formas en la clase de idiomas. Principalmente, los profesores lo pueden usar para practicar las destrezas de comprensión oral. El vídeo es una herramienta ideal para practicar las destrezas de comprensión oral. La ventaja obvia sobre el audio solo es el soporte visual que puede ofrecer al espectador. A veces los alumnos pueden ver la boca del hablante, su expresión facial y gestos, además de ser capaces de ver el contexto claramente y cualquier pista visual que puedan ayudar a la comprensión. Evaluación Evaluar el progreso de los alumnos en clase de inglés puede ser una forma efectiva de evaluar los conocimientos y consolidación del alumno individualmente, y también de determinar sus necesidades futuras. Smart Planet ofrece al profesor muchas formas de evaluar el progreso de sus alumnos. El Student’s Book, Workbook y el Teacher’s resource disk, Smart Resources tienen material para exámenes adaptable.

Evaluación formal El Teacher’s resource disc, Smart Resources ofrece una amplia gama de material de exámenes que los profesores pueden preparar rápida y fácilmente para sus clases.
