        Saint‐Gobain is back with the most rocking architecture competition Transparence 2010. A stage where all students of architecture can  showcase their talents, compete with each other and gain exposure to the industry.    Transparence is not just a competition; it’s an attempt to give back to the architecture industry by identifying new talent and giving youngsters  a chance to truly rock the show.    Transparence 2010 brings across the challenge to design an International Convention Centre at Navi Mumbai. 

  ABSTRACT  :    Navi Mumbai is one of the biggest planned cities in the world. It is also known as the twin city of the present city of Mumbai. Navi Mumbai is a  self sufficient metropolitan city, designed in such a way that all the settlements are well connected.  An effective Mass  Transport system links Navi Mumbai to the important parts of Greater Mumbai, Thane and other adjacent parts. Navi Mumbai is a hub to  many “IT” giants. The International InfoTech Park (IIP) at Vashi, the Technology Centre at Belapure, the Millennium Business Park at Mhape  and the “IT” Hardware Park at Dronagiri offer tremendous potential for businesses related to Computer Hardware and Software. As part of the  government’s “Advantage Maharashtra” program, a domestic as well as an international airport, an international convention centre, an  international exhibition centre, shopping complexes at railway stations, water transport terminals, amusement parks and golf courses are  proposed as part of the future plans at Navi Mumbai. And if these landmark projects materialize then Navi Mumbai Residents may soon  witness a radical metamorphosis in the topography of this satellite township.   

The Challenge this year ‐  International Convention Centre  International Convention Centre (ICC) as the name suggests is a podium to perform global activities.  The design should demonstrate the  following:  •  An exercise in sustainable master‐planning of a facility that will host multiple functions.  •  A magnetic hub creating avenues of job opportunities.  •  An iconic masterpiece as a part of Design that will be the landmark of the future   

DESIGN BRIEF:    Facilities to be housed in the ICC ‐  A)  Convention complex  B)  Hotel  C)  Commercial facilities  D)  Socio cultural facilities  E)  Services and parking      A) Convention Complex    1. The State Hall  o Area 600.00 SQ.M. Approx.  o Capacity 200  o Rooms for note takers  o Rooms for bodyguards  o 8 interpreters’ rooms    2. Plenary Hall  o Area 4500.00 SQ.M. Approx.  o Capacity 2800  o 2 Royal boxes  o 8 interpreters room with 32 operating channels    3. Unity Hall  o 2 No. Each hall ‐ Area 2500.00 SQ.M. Approx.  o 1 hall with a Capacity of 1200 pax for banquets  o 1 hall with a Capacity 2000 pax for cocktails  o 8 interpreters’ rooms

NOTE:    ¾ Out of all the above components mentioned for ICC the “Convention Complex” is to be detailed out with all adequate drawings.  ¾ Rest other components / facility blocks are to be shown with correct size foot print as a part of the master plan.      

CRITERIA FOR ASSESMENT:    Concept:   1. The evolution of concept and the process till the final design will be one of the important criteria for judgment. The evaluation will also  be based on the extent to which the final goal of the design brief is achieved.   2. There are numerous ICC projects proposed and executed in the past which can be referred. But an original idea / thought process with  an innovative approach will be given a preference.    3. Use of glass in the proposed design will be critically examined with respect to the following points:  ƒ Use of glass to define different forms.  ƒ Use of glass to create interior and exterior spaces.  ƒ Innovative details for fixing glass.  ƒ Use of colored glazing to create synergy in design  4. In addition to the above the design would be adjudged on the following :  Master planning Approach  ƒ Traffic circulation  ƒ Building Orientation  ƒ Placement of different facility blocks on site and their correlation  ƒ Pedestrian plaza design  ƒ “Green” Building approach and sustainable Architecture  ƒ Building massing and iconic design forms.  ƒ Waterfront Design: How best this water edge is being used as a part of the design to create a frontage for entertainment activities  within the site.

Transparence 2010 is open to undergraduate students of architecture and design.  Teams to comprise of a maximum of three .  A two‐stage competition – Four Regional Juries – North, South, East and West; The regional winners will be intimated on the spot at  the regional juries that are scheduled to take place in the month of October. The jury comments and expectations for the next stage  will be communicated to them along with the final date of submission.  All participants are invited to the regional juries where their travel expenses will be reimbursed on the spot. There will be no                 presentations by the teams at the regional juries but the teams will get an opportunity to hear the jury comments and interact with  them. The venue for the regional juries will be communicated to all the participants.

Concept Site Plan Zoning Plan Plans, Sections, Elevations, 3 D drawings and any other drawings to explain your design

A maximum of 10 sheets. All sheets to be in A3 size and to be accompanied by soft copies. Please ensure that the presentation is in a power point format compatible with MS Office 2003 with not more than 20 slides. Please write names and other team details only on the rear side of the sheets and only on the first and last slide of the ppt.

Regional Winners:  Rs.18000/‐ per team, a certificate and an opportunity to win the coveted National Trophy.  National Winner:  Rs.75000/‐ per team, a trophy and a certificate.  National First Runner‐up:  Rs.50000/‐ per team, a trophy and a certificate.  National Second Runner‐up:  Rs.25000/‐ per team, a trophy and a certificate.    All participants with submissions that are found technically complete by the jury will be awarded a certificate.
