Exploring the Vegetarian Culture: Speech Outline
Introduction
Most people think they know what it means to be a vegetarian. According to the dictionary.com, what it mean to be a vegetarian is “a person who does not eat or does not believe in eating meat, fish, or in some cases, any food derived from animals, such as egg or cheese, but subsists on vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain, etc.”(Dictionary 2014). This definition is true, but really there is a little more to this culture than you may think. Today, I am speaking on this topic to readjust some of the stereotypes that come with being a vegetarian, along with giving them their credibility, because there are a variety of tips and ideas that we all can learn from vegetarians that can modify our lives today.

Transition: What does being vegetarian consist of?
a) There are many different varieties in this culture. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
Ovo- eats eggs but not dairy products. Lacto- eats dairy but not egg products. Ovo lacto- eats egg and dairy products. Buddhists vegetarianism- religion that requires the exemption of meat in all meals. Veganism- does not consume any dairy, egg, or meat products. Raw- eats food undercooked for the nutrients. Jain- a religion that does not consume meat, garlic, or onions in their diet. Semi- may eat some fish and or chicken in their diets.
b) There are four specific reasons on why people become a vegetarian. Those reasons are either. 1. Religious- their religious backgrounds require a specific diet that mainly restricts eating meat. 2. Health- they may have to start a new diet that cut out meat to better their health. 3. Ethnicity-some peoples ethnicity or surroundings make being a vegetarian a social norm. 4. Economics- some people simply can’t afford to by meats so try to work around eating it to save money.
Secton2 Transition- there is much controversy and stereotypical comments that are still circulating throughout the vegetarian culture today.
c) Along with every culture, there comes stereotypes and controversy. 1. Controversy- are semi vegetarians considered “true vegetarians” because they consume meat? This statement as been on going through out the vegetarian community and still holds as a question for some today. 2. Environmental- a lot of vegetarians are known to be environmentalist but this is not true for all. According to an article called “can eating habits effect the environment” many in the vegetarianism culture helps the environment by eating organic foods, which “reduces the amount of chemicals that travel into the ecosystem and water supply from farming” (Can Eating Habits… 2014). 3. Democrats- stereotype. 4. Drive small cars- stereotype. Section3 Transition- vegetarianism is very well known to be a healthy culture, but long with that there are many advantages as well as disadvantages.
Even though there are a couple disadvantages, there are more good advantages than bad ones.
a) Advantages1. Reduces health risk such as certain cancer. 2. Reduces carbon footprint. 3. Also have the advantage of learning to cook a variety of meals to go along with their diet. d) Disadvantages1. Risks of not retrieving enough protein, calcium, and nutrients. 2. They have to work a little harder to get the nutrients they need.

Transition: Based on my research and interview, not all stereotypes are true with every individual, not all vegetarians restrict themselves from meat, and many are helping the environment by eating organic foods.
Conclusion
a) I think every individual can learn from the vegetarian culture. I believe this culture allows you to have your own perspective on what you shall consume in your everyday diet. Even if you personally choose to not cut out meat from your diet, such as a vegetarian/vegan does, you defiantly can gain inspiration from them, and have the opportunity to become a little more health conscious of the ingredients in the products you consume, and end up benefiting from it in the long run.
