1 I. Introduction a. Background Information: Lately, there has been a controversy about gun control due to gun crime. These new laws not only affect people who oppose firearms, but especially the people who rely on it for protection. b. Thesis Statement: Although many people have been harmed by misused firearms, the government should not new gun law due to the Second Amendment and because guns provide protection. II. First Body Paragraph a. Topic Sentence: In the Constitution, the Second Amendment gives the right to keep and bear firearms. b. Quote: “In a five-four split decision, the McDonald Court help that an individual’s right to keep and bear arms is incorporated and applicable to the states through the 14th Amendment’s Due Process Clause” (Rose, 5). III. Second Body Paragraph a. Topic Sentence: Guns provide protection and have saved many lives; new laws will decrease the ability to use a gun. b. Quote: “…the requirement that any firearm in a home be disassembled or locked made “it impossible for citizens to use arms for the core lawful purpose of selfdefense” (Rose, 9). c. “…a ban on high-capacity ammunition magazines, containing more than ten rounds” (The Economist, 4). IV. Counter Argument a. Topic Sentence: Some may view firearms as a murderous and adverse due to the

2 many deaths of crimeless people every year, especially in California. b. Quote: In 2011, FBI Crime Statistics stated that there were 1,220 people murdered by firearms in California (FBI). V. Refutation a. Topic Sentence: Despite California being the top state for having the most deaths by guns, there are statistics that state that California has the strongest gun laws; which is contradictory. b. Quote: “California holds the top spot with the nation’s strongest gun laws that help combat the illegal gun market, prevent the sale of guns without background checks and reduce risks to children” (Brady Campaign). VI. Conclusion a. Call to Action: As gun ownership dramatically increased over the past few years, gun crime has been declining and the 2nd Amendment overrules the new executive orders pertaining to gun control announced by President Barack Obama.
