A planar mechanism consists of links which are said to move only in parallel planes. When planar mechanisms comprise only lower pair ts (revolute and prismatic pairs), they are called planar linkages. Examples for planar four bar linkage are given below. Beam Engine It is designed for the conversion of rotary motion into reciprocating motion. It belongs to crank and lever mechanism. Show the beam engine as in Figure (1).

Infer from Figure (1) that the linkage possesses four bars which performs a series of properly connected rotation and oscillation operations to convert the rotary motion to reciprocating motion. Coupling rod It is example for double crank mechanism. It consists of four links which transmits the rotary operation of one wheel into the other wheel. Show the coupling rod as in Figure (2).

Hand Pump It belongs to crank and slotted lever mechanism. Show the hand pump as in Figure (3).

Infer from Figure (3) that the link reciprocates along a straight line because of the combined rotation and oscillation motion of other two links. Also, that here one link is in fixed position. Oscillating cylinder engine Here, also the rotational motion of the crank makes the slider to reciprocate. This reciprocating engine mechanism possesses three turning pairs and one sliding pair. Crank and slotted lever mechanism This mechanism is used in shaping machines and slotting machines. It is also termed as Whitworth quick return mechanism. Show the Whitworth quick return mechanism as in Figure (5).

Windshield Wiper It belongs to crank and rocker mechanism. Show the windshield wiper as in Figure (6).
