PCS100 ESS, 100 kVA to 10 MVA
Based around a low voltage converter platform the PCS100 ESS provides wide bandwidth performance with a flexible and highly modular power electronic configuration. New energy storage devices such as latest generation batteries, flywheel and super capacitors provide the opportunity to store energy from the electricity grid and return it when required. This offers a range of options to strengthen and enhance the performance, quality and reliability of smart electricity grids. To unleash the full benefits of grid connected energy storage, smart grid connected converters are required. The ABB PCS100 ESS is such a device, offering advanced features and configuration options.

The PCS100 ESS allows control of both real power (P) and reactive power (Q) based on the system requirement. Advanced control features in the “Generator Emulation” mode of operation make the PCS100 ESS look like a true power system component. The PCS100 ESS looks to the power system like a traditional synchronous machine. This is achieved through power electronics and advanced control and there are no large spinning masses. Even inertia can be modelled within the system enabling it to deliver to, or draw power from, the grid dependent on the system frequency, rate of change. Should the grid supply be lost the PCS100 ESS can detect this, disconnect itself from the grid and shut down.
PCS100 Energy Storage System (ESS)
In some applications it is desirable to keep sections of load supplied, so alternatively the system can be set to operate in island mode where the system disconnects from the main grid but continues to supply local loads. When the grid returns the systems will automatically resynchronise and return to grid connect mode.
