Program Notes Anne McGinty, the composer of Westwind Overture is a well-known female composer of many band arrangements. McGinty is also the first female to be commissioned to write for the United States Army Band. In her piece Westwind Overture, the band really shines showing off her beautiful melodies. The piece starts with a lovely melody in its “A” section and transitions to a new one in “B”. To close the piece, the song returns back to the original melody. Frank Ticheli, a highly regarded American composer has written numerous works for the wind band setting. In his piece First Light, journey with the band on an early morning ride. The piece supposed to represent a journey on a raft, is a calming piece that brings the listener on a peaceful ride down river. With a light dance feel, the listener feels at ease as the intensity builds signifying the end of the morning journey. Robert W. Smith, another highly regarded American composer has published over 700 works. The Tempest, one of the many works by Smith gives the listener a vivid image of a tempest. Allow the heavy ostinatos, or reoccurring repeated patterns to set up the foundation of the storm. Stack it with brass and percussion to allow the storm to grow and grow. American composer James Curnow was born in Michigan. Starting off as a music educator, Curnow has ended being president of his own music press. His piece Fanfare and Flourishes, is based on Charpentier’s, Te Deum. Based off of this polyphonic motet, it was used to celebrate the victory of the Battle of Steinkirk. The piece is incredibly lively and full of excitement. Listen as the band plays a fanfare of victory. Frank Erickson wrote Air for Band in 1956. Although technically simple, the piece challenges any young band in finding the perfect blend of sounds. A starting melody is brought by the woodwinds and is accompanied by the low brass. It is with the balance that they bring that sets up the rest of the piece. Every instrument has their own role in painting the beautiful picture Erickson created with Air for Band. Encanto by Robert W. Smith is the final piece on the program. Written in 1989, this exciting piece opens with a brass fanfare. Following the fanfare, a new and exciting melody enters to transition from the fanfare. A slower section exhibits the softer side of the piece. To close the beginning fanfare reappears and ends on a strong note.

Conductor’s Bio

Born in Phoenix Arizona, Christopher Vasquez attended the University of Arizona and received his bachelors of music in music education. Although only 2 years out of school, Mr. Vasquez has done an excellent job at reviving the slowly diminishing band program of Desert Horizon Middle School. Prior to graduating at the University of Arizona, he volunteered for many years with the U of A Outreach Honor Band and had several students in his own studio. Putting emphasis on the saxophone, his interest in the instrument is still alive, with his frequent participation in community bands, and the growing numbers of his private saxophone studio. Mr. Vasquez also continues to play an important role in outreach with the community with his frequent masterclasses on saxophone and on middle school band advice. Mr. Vasquez intends to continue teaching middle school music for another few years and then wishes to pursue a masters in music education.
