KEY ELEMENTS OF A MECHATRONIC SYSTEM

HISTORY • The Thor was the first electric-powered washing machine. Introduced in 1908 by the Hurley Machine Company of Chicago, Illinois, the Thor washing machine was invented Alva J. Fisher. The Thor was a drum type washing machine with a galvanized tub and an electric motor

• Bendix Corporation introduced the first domestic automatic washing machine in Metropolitan washing machine

1937, having applied for a patent in the same year. • A large number of US manufacturers introduced competing automatic machines (mainly of the top-loading type) in the late 1940s and early 1950s. • An improved front-loading automatic model, the Bendix Deluxe was introduced in 1947, General Electric also introduced its first top loading automatic model in 1947. This machine had many of the features that are incorporated into modern machines.

SIMPLE WASHING MACHINE

 A simple twin tub machine has a drum driven by an electric motor. It is used cam-operated switches in order to control the washing cycle  Water and soap are added to the load and the machine switched on.  It might contain an electric heater.  Spinning is done in the second tub with manual transfer of the

load.  This is not a mechatronic system.

 The contour of a cam determines the time at which it operates a switch, • The sequence of instructions and the instructions used in a particular washing program are determined by the set of cams chosen. • With modern washing machines the controller is a

microprocessor and the program is not supplied by the mechanical arrangement of cams but by a software program.

Mechatronics Approach:  The domestic washing machine is used cam-operated switches in order to control the washing cycle is now out-of-date. Such mechanical switches are be in replaced by microprocessors.  A microprocessor can be just considered as being essentially a collection of logic gates and memory elements that are not wired up as individual components but whose logical functions are implemented by means of software.

 The microprocessor-controlled washing machine can be considered an example of a mechatronics approach in that a mechanical system has become integrated with electronic controls.  As a consequence, a bulky mechanical system is replaced by a much more compact microprocessor system which is readily adjustable to give a greater variety of programs.

AUTOMATIC WASHING MACHINE

 Automatic washing machines have integrated sensors, controllers and a programmer to measure the load, fill with water and adjust the temperature.

 Various programmes are executed to agitate, wash, rinse and spin dry.  In some cases they will even use hot air drying. This is a good example of mechatronics.  The system uses solenoid valves to fill and drain the drum.  It has level and temperature sensors, weight sensor and speed sensor.

 Depending on the programme, these are all processed to activate the power control and speed of the motor.
