CONTENT STANDARD: The learner demonstrates understanding of: 1. African literature as means of exploring forces that human beings contend with; 2. various reading styles and reading purposes; 3. prosodic features that serve as carriers of meaning; 4. ways by which information may be organized, related, and delivered orally; and 5. parallel structures and cohesive devises in presenting information PERFORMACE STANDARD: The learner transfers learning by composing and delivering an informative speech based on a scientific topic of interest keeping in mind the proper and effective use of parallel structures and cohesive devises and appropriate prosodic features, stance, and behavior. COMPETENCIES: 1. Reading Comprehension a) scan for logical connectors to determine the text type; b) skim to determine key ideas; c) use the appropriate reading style (scanning, skimming, speed reading, intensive reading etc.) for one’s purpose; and d) read intensively to determine the author’s purpose. 2. Listening Comprehension a) listen for important points signalled by volume, projection, pitch, stress, intonation, juncture, and rate of speech; b) determine how volume, projection, pitch, stress, intonation, juncture, and speech rate serve as carriers of meaning; and c) note the changes in volume, projection, pitch, stress, intonation, juncture, and rate of speech that affect meaning. 3. Vocabulary Development a) determine the meaning of idiomatic expressions by noting context clues and collocations; and b) use appropriate strategies in unlocking the meaning of unfamiliar words and idiomatic expressions. 4. Literature a) express appreciation for sensory images used; b) explain the literary devices used; c) determine tone, mood, technique, and purpose of the author; and d) explain how a selection may be influenced by culture, history, environment, or other factors. 5. Writing and Composition a) present ideas using a variety of graphic organizer; b) organize ideas in one-step word, phrase, and sentence outline forms; and
