This includes following correct handling and preparation procedures and use of appropriate protective clothing and equipment Prepare cleaning and sanitizing agents as required Prepare equipment for cleaning. This includes rendering equipment safe to clean and clearing all materials, consumables and waste Advise affected work areas of cleaning schedule and progress Clean/sanitize equipment as required according to procedures Return equipment to operating order Maintain housekeeping standards Contain spills and dispose of spilled material according to company procedure Store cleaning agents and equipment as required Record cleaning and sanitation data in required format Knowledge of: Basic purpose of cleaning/sanitizing and housekeeping Safe handling and storage of requirements of cleaning agents and equipment used Purpose of protective clothing and equipment related to cleaning role Action required in the event of an accident when handling cleaning chemicals Methods used to render equipment safe to clean including lock-out, tag-out and isolation procedures where relevant Housekeeping and cleaning standards and methods relevant to equipment and the work area Procedures for preparing cleaning/sanitizing agents. This includes consequences of mixing incorrectly and combining incompatible chemicals Procedures for applying cleaning/sanitizing agents Procedures for safe use of cleaning/sanitizing equipment and chemicals Types of waste generated by both the production and the cleaning process and related collection, treatment and disposal requirements
Spill control procedures and recycling or disposal of spilled materials. This includes environmental responsibilities covered by environmental legislation Requirements to liaise/advise related work areas
Implement Housekeeping Policies
Store policies and procedures implemented to ensure counter, point of sales area, fixtures, displays, walkways and other work areas maintained in a clean and tidy manner. Individual and team performance monitored to ensure housekeeping standards maintained according to store policy. Regular schedule/roster for store/department housekeeping tasks and inspections developed and maintained. Team informed of individual responsibilities for housekeeping tasks. Procedures for prompt waste removal especially spillages on floors implemented according to store policy. Supply and maintenance of housekeeping equipment and materials coordinated according to store policy. Store procedures for safe storage of housekeeping equipment ensured. Suggestions for improvements in procedures reported to management according to store policy.
Evidence Guide Evidence of the following knowledge and skills is considered essential to demonstrate competency in this unit: consistently applying store policies and procedures in regard to housekeeping duties in work area, point of sales terminals, walkways and fixtures/display areas implementing and monitoring store housekeeping policies and procedures including prompt waste/spillage removal and occupational health and safety legislation/regulations/codes of practice developing and maintaining regular housekeeping schedules/rosters informing staff of responsibilities for housekeeping tasks monitoring individual and team performance ensuring housekeeping standards are maintained coordinating supply, maintenance and safe storage of housekeeping equipment and materials The following variables may be present: Store policies and procedures in regard to housekeeping. Size, type and location of store. Store merchandise and service range. Handling techniques may vary according to stock characteristics and industry codes of practice. Range of responsibilities/job description. Type of housekeeping/maintenance equipment used. Maintenance, use and storage of cleaning equipment. Levels of staffing, eg. staff shortages.
Varying levels of staff training. Routine or busy trading conditions. Full-time, part-time or casual staff.
Conduct housekeeping activities
Identify housekeeping requirements Explain and understand site safety and housekeeping standards. Undertake housekeeping inspection in accordance with procedures/work instructions. Identify and schedule housekeeping requirements as appropriate. Perform general housekeeping duties Keep designated work areas clean to enterprise specific standards. Keep designated work areas clear of obstructions. Handle and use chemicals and solvents following workplace procedures. Ensure work area is ready for next . Remove work materials to designated locations. Clean plant and equipment Keep assigned plant and equipment clean following established enterprise procedures. Ensure that appropriate personal protective equipment is used as required. Dispose of waste materials. Correctly identify waste materials. Remove waste materials to designated location.
Competence includes the ability for the practical completion of the job to apply and describe: duty of care requirements for housekeeping process procedures for plant maintenance safe handling procedures the standard of cleanliness required plan own work including predicting consequences and identifying improvements use PPE, safely handle products and materials, read relevant safety information and apply safety precautions appropriate to the task distinguish between: reusable materials and waste routine and special cleaning needs. Consistent performance should be demonstrated. In particular look to see that: early warning signs of areas in need of cleaning are recognised work areas are kept tidy and clean
equipment is neatly stored, in a safe manner, in the correct location at all times when not in use equipment is always used safely.
Language, literacy and numeracy requirements: This unit requires the ability to read and interpret typical product specifications, job sheets and material labels as provided to operators. Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms. Basic numeracy is also required, eg, to determine that two 25 kg bags are needed to make up a requirement for 50 kg.
