Executive Summary • This case was prepared by Professor Anita Elberse & Tom Dye to elaborate managerial skills and capabilities with analysis of Sir Alex Ferguson’s experience while managing Manchester united. • The case depicts the analytical vision he had for the game as player and the football’s most successful manager. • It co-relates the different approaches used by Ferguson regarding different Leadership Models • In this case, Author discussed about application of Ferguson’s formula for managing a game, a season and a club. • It provides a deep insight about emulating Ferguson’s managerial traits of handling challenges in corporate situations. 3

• Founded in 1878 • Won first English league title in 1908 & England's major domestic cup competition, the football association (FA) cup, one year later • Lack of proper management • In next four decade, no tittle

Manchester United with Ferguson (1/4) • On arrival he found a team lacking what takes to be a champion • Introduced non conventional ways of managing • In summer of 1995 he singed off 3 fan favourite senior players • Revolutionised the youth program of the club • Also brought in equality and sense of respect among the seniors and juniors • Initially criticised for unconventional approach • But, soon his strategic approach paid back.
