My Memories of the Fireflies
As a little girl growing up in Hamilton, Ohio, I have very fond memories of my childhood. I know I have the most wonderful family and truly know I had the best parents a girl could ever have. However, today, my mom, dad, and my oldest brother, Timmy, are now in Heaven with the Lord. I have two brothers still living, Russell and Mark. Our parent’s memories still lives on forever in our hearts.
Growing up, my three brothers, Timmy, Russell, and Mark, teased me at times, yet we always got along and were always there for one another, even today. On warm summer nights, we all would go outside after dinner and watch for the fireflies to come out. I believe every little child loves to catch fireflies. We called them “lightning bugs”.
I distinctly running all around the yard and whenever I would see a little blinking yellow light in the air, I would run to try to catch it. Our mother gave us small Mason Jars with holes in the lids to use. Then she would say to us, “When you catch one in the jar, set it free right away. God’s little creatures were created to be free because they too have a purpose. God created them to light up the night when the sun goes down and to make others happy.”
I will never forget her words and memorable days as a little girl when my beautiful mother, Anna, and my dad, Charles, who was an U.S. Army Veteran and war hero in WWII, instilled in my brothers and me the quality of life and how precious life is. I still have wonderful memories of my dad and mom sitting on the porch laughing and watching us play. I their laughter as the fireflies flew high in the air, escaping the reach of our small hands. Now that I am grown, I still love catching fireflies. I know I am still a kid at heart and that is part of the joy of life.
To the Children, God’s little Angels
I hope you never lose the “kid” in you when you grow up, little children. It is a big part of life’s happiness, in which you will learn about yourself and cherish your own precious memories forever.

O nce upon a time high in the universe, there lived a very beautiful little firefly named, Doozy. He was the most beautiful, yet a very lonely firefly. Every day of his life, he would flutter his sun-glistened wings high up in the deep blue sky. That is how he traveled in the wide-open universe. One sunny day as he was flying, he realized he was the only little firefly in the world; or so he thought. He flew all around the stars and even sometimes down to earth. Doozy always tried to enjoy his little life even though he did not know why he existed. Sometimes he was sad and did not know what to do, but he always seemed to manage. Doozy would soar high above the snowy-white clouds even though there were not any signs of life there. Often, it made him feel lonelier, but this is what he liked to do. Therefore, he lived in his own little world, with his own little thoughts, and he tried to be a happy little firefly.
O ne bright and sunny morning as he flew down to earth, he landed on a beautiful flower. He felt the morning dew against his shiny wings and sensed the smell of a gorgeous yellow rose. Suddenly, it made him that there was a lot more to living than being alone. Yes, Doozy had friends in his universe like Mr. Moon and all of the stars and planets, such as Venus and Mars, yet he was still very lonely.
Just as Doozy was about to soar back high into the universe, he heard a soft little voice in the air. He looked around, but saw nothing. Once again, he heard the soft little voice, and again he saw no one.
The small voice said, “Hey, little firefly; how beautiful you are! Where did you come from?”
H e then looked over his very fragile wings and saw a sweet little girl staring right at him. She was beautiful with wavy blonde curls and big blue eyes. She stood about four-feet tall holding a rag doll in her small hands. Doozy was a little frightened at first. He was not used to seeing anyone like her before. He was so used to living high above the earth in the sky all alone. Suddenly, he felt a sense of peace, security, and much to his surprise, love.
The little child spoke softly as she gazed her eyes upon Doozy. She was so gentle and careful not to injure his beautiful wings. Knowing this, he spoke to her.
Doozy said, “Hello, my name is Doozy and who might you be little one?” The little girl ed what her mother told her about not talking to strangers. Then she realized that Doozy was a beautiful little firefly and not anyone who would harm her. He was different than she was. She smiled and answered, “My name is Mercedes, and I love fireflies. How old are you little firefly?”
Doozy answered, “Well, I don’t really know. I only know that I exist in the universe. It seems all I ever do is go flying high in the sky looking down at the earth, but I have never seen anyone like you before! Are you real?” asked Doozy.
Mercedes laughed and said, “Silly, yes I am real,” with a slight twinkle in her deep blue eyes.
T he little firefly told Mercedes how lonely he was and that he just existed, but did not know why. She smiled and said, “I believe it is God’s purpose for you to exist because you can bring light into the night when the sun goes down.” Doozy was not sure what she meant, but it sounded okay to him anyway. It made him very happy to know he made her smile. Doozy and Mercedes talked about happy things and enjoyed their newfound friendship.
F inally, after long conversation, Mercedes said, “Oh, I am sorry, but my mommy is calling me home for supper. It is getting late and the sun is setting. It will be dark soon. I am very happy to know you, little Doozy. I hope you will come again and play with me.” Doozy replied, “Yes, I would like that very much. Our new friendship will last forever.”
Feeling very sad now, Doozy asked, “When will I see you again? I now must go back to my universe and there I will be lonely again. I will always you my new little friend, Mercedes.” A tiny tear flowed down his little face as he slowly flew away.
Mercedes waved good-bye to him and assured him she would look for him every day. Doozy said, “I will come again soon.” The lonely little firefly now felt happiness and peace to know that he made a new friend happy.
I t was a long journey back to the universe and thoughts of being alone again made him even sadder. When Doozy returned to his own little world high in the universe, he looked around in amazement. Just across the Milky Way, Doozy saw Mr. Moon smiling at him. It was as if he knew of his flight to earth and his surprising adventure with the beautiful little girl named, Mercedes. As he tipped his wings in acknowledgement of Mr. Moon’s presence, he saw the most amazing sight!
D oozy saw the most beautiful little lady firefly that looked like a rainbow in the sky. Doozy wondered…hmmm…Is this little firefly someone whom I could share my universe? With that thought, he was unsure what to do next.
Suddenly, Mr. Moon who was very wise said, “I believe this one is meant for you, Doozy. She is a beautiful lady firefly who can be your life-long friend and companion. You will never be lonely again. I believe she is God’s gift to you. He wants you to be sad and lonely no longer.”
D oozy did not know what to say. He slowly flew over and stared at her most beautiful wings. The lady firefly smiled and tipped her fragile wings slightly to say “hello” to Doozy.
Doozy replied, “Hello, to you, little firefly. Where did you come from and do you have a name?”
She smiled and said, “Well, I came from God, but I don’t know why I exist and no, I don’t even have a name. All I ever do is go flying around in the universe wondering why I am here. I get lonely sometimes, too,” said the lady firefly.
Thinking back on his flight to earth, Doozy ed his new little friend Mercedes, who instilled in him his purpose for his existence in the world.
Then unexpectedly he smiled and said, “My name is Doozy. May I call you, Thoozy?” The lady firefly laughed and nodded gracefully with a smile, as she believed Thoozy would be a nice name for her.
“I will tell you why we exist,” said Doozy. “We exist because we were created to light up the night when the sun goes down and to make others happy.” Thoozy gently raised her antennas to carefully listen. Once again, she agreed with Doozy.
She said, “Thank you for giving me my purpose, Doozy. Now, we both will always be happy.”
With a sparkle in his eyes, Doozy told Thoozy all about his new friend Mercedes and how she instilled in him his purpose for being created.
T heir tiny hearts fluttered as they embraced their shiny wings into flight throughout the universe. Doozy now realized what Mercedes meant about his existence. He not only could light up the night with his yellow glowing light, but now will have someone to share his universe. Doozy, the lonely firefly, will never be lonely anymore. It seems that Thoozy was a gift from God after all. Doozy now believed in love and peace. He wanted to send a message down to earth to Mercedes to let her know he found a beautiful new friend. Doozy and Thoozy put their shiny wings together and sprinkled stardust and happiness down to the little girl on earth known as, Mercedes.
T he next day as Mercedes was outside playing in the yard with her little rag doll, she saw something written high in the bright blue sky. It was a message from Doozy that read, “I’m not lonely anymore!” Now, from that day on, Mercedes always knew that stardust and happiness covered her life. She was glad to know that Doozy was now happy too.
I t all came from Doozy, the lonely little firefly who thought he had no purpose for his existence. He just flew around in the universe not knowing why he was created. Then he met his new friend on earth named Mercedes, who helped him discover his true purpose. Doozy learned that everything that God created has a purpose, even beautiful little fireflies. Doozy now believes that life is best when you can make someone else happy.
