Aim & Objective: The aim of this course is to introduce students the basic concepts and major components of microprocessors and microcontrollers and to provide students with knowledge and skills for solving problems with microprocessors /microcontrollers. This course covers in depth the architecture and programming of the 8051 microcontrollers. This course will enable the students to design microcontroller based systems.

Hardware structure and basic architecture of 8051 family, pins layout, ports, memories & other general-purpose features and functions. Assignment#1: Term Project Proposal submission Software. Instructions set, Basic operations, Loops, Data storing techniques, The Stack. Short Programming examples. Addressing Modes. Immediate, , Direct, Indirect & other addressing modes for assembly language programming, Examples Assignment#2: Project RS Document Timers/Counters. Modes of timers/counters, 16-bit mode, 8-bit autoreload mode, Program examples for timers in different modes, testing in simulator. Interrupts. Introduction to interrupts, types of interrupts, Hardware & Software interrupts, Timer interrupts, Serial interrupt. Serial Interface. Difference between parallel & serial interfacings, serial interfacing modes, Baud rate, Programming examples for Data transmit & receive. Hardware interfacing circuits. Interfacing techniques. Interfacing ADC & DAC with micro controller, interfacing the I/O devices, interfacing the external memory, interfacing with PC using serial port. Assignment#3: Project Design Document Survey of Various Microcontroller Designs. Introduction to Atmel AVR, MEGA series, PIC microcontrollers, ARM RISC microcontrollers, Internal structure, pin layout, programming instructions, programming examples. Introduction to the trainer of 8051. Assembler and the work environment Procedure to use the Keil software and utility subroutines Display different bit patterns on LEDs by sending bits on different ports. Implementing a 0-99 up and down decimal counter. A simple sequence controller. Switching on a relay-based 220 volt circuit. Checking out the status of overflow and carry flags by doing signed and unsigned addition/subtraction and displaying it on 7-segment display. Exp 7 Square wave generation by using interrupts.
