Measuring Evil Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “Every action is measured by the depth of the sentiment from which it proceeds”. This means that the outcome of an action is not nearly as important as what the person’s intent was and where they were coming from. This can be applied to the idea of evil: how is one’s evilness measured? Is it based off of the outcome of their intentions, or the intentions themselves? When comparing Miss Strangeworth in “The Possibility of Evil” and the narrator of “Blue Boots”, Miss Strangeworth is less evil than the Blue Boots narrator as her intentions were a lot less harmful than the narrator’s. The protagonists of both short stories clearly cause harm to those around them: “Percival Mueller. Suffocation would be a fitting end. Loretta Periwinkle. I could poison her water supply. P. Charles Endlmen, my favourite victim. Garrotting?” (Blue Boots, pg. 13) “...she wrote on a pink sheet: DIDN’T YOU EVER SEE AN IDIOT CHILD BEFORE? SOME PEOPLE JUST SHOULDN’T HAVE CHILDREN SHOULD THEY?” (The Possibility of Evil, pg. 169). Miss Strangeworth’s and the Blue Boots narrator’s actions reflect negative impacts on their receivers, but their intents were different. Miss Strangeworth does not think her actions are evil; in fact, she believes she is helping the community by alerting them of their insecurities: “The town where she lived had to be kept clean and sweet, but people everywhere were lustful and evil and degraded, and needed to be watched; the world was so large, and there was only one Strangeworth left in it.” (The Possibility of Evil, pg. 170). The Blue Boots narrator, on the other hand, clearly has other plans: “There seemed no end of irritating people whose names were duly inscribed in the pages of my pocket notebook.” (Blue Boots, pg. 13). Her victims are people who she doesn’t like, and she is coming from a place of loathing and annoyance. The examples above show that Miss Strangeworth and the Blue Boots narrator clearly have different intentions. Miss Strangeworth is aiming to help her community, while the Blue Boots narrator is doing the exact opposite, eliminating people who she doesn’t like. This means that when comparing their evilness, Miss Strangeworth is less evil due to her intentions, despite the outcome of their actions yielding negative impacts.
