Love and Pain Falling in Love Deception Afraid to Speak Out Shut Out from the World Prisoner in Own Home Hope/Reunited with Family Good Times Deceived by Spouse Again A New Beginning/Triumph
This book is dedicated to Kisha Fiffer, who endured similar hardships, but her outcome didn’t turn out this way. I want her to know that God is still in the blessing business, and He’s able to do the impossible. With Him being first, all you must know is Richard 3:16: “If God said it, you can believe it.” Own that because the God I serve is a true and living God, and He makes no mistakes. He said if you delight yourself in Him, not only will He give you what you need, but He will give you the desires of your heart. I’m just crazy enough to believe everything He said. It’s because of His grace and mercy that we are all here today.
Acknowledgments
First and foremost, all praises to the most high God for giving me the gift of writing. I am nothing without Him, and I thank Him tremendously. I want to thank my wonderful husband, Rodney, for his continued and for always being there. I also want to thank my girls (Rolincia and Rosilyn) for being my inspiration and motivation. Without you all, none of this would be possible.
Chapter 1
Love and Pain
Jerry Wade Jr. was an orphan almost as soon as he entered the world. When he was born, his dad was the happiest man on earth. He was a wealthy man and had his own business, with a beautiful wife, but they were missing children. Jerry’s mom seemed to be even more thrilled, and she was ready to have more and extend their little family. She was married to a loving and caring man, who did everything for her. Every day Jerry’s father would take him for a ride in his truck, and every night his mother would tuck him in bed and read him a story. Life was good for the Wade family. They had each other, and Jerry’s parents were working on their second child. They wanted a basketball team because they lived in a nice two-story house and wanted it filled with joy. Things just couldn’t get any better. Jerry was a happy little boy and knew his parents loved him. The Wade family was built on morals, and their motto was God first and family second. Nothing was more important than church and family. Every Sunday they attended Sunday school and regular service. On Wednesday nights, it was always Bible class, and Friday nights were family night no matter what came up. Jerry Sr. and his wife had date night on Tuesday and Saturday nights. It kept their relationship burning with fire. Every chance he got, he reminded his wife that she was the apple of his eye and the only woman he wanted. Every Sunday, they went out to eat after service. They would even invite the pastor and his family. They were a very loving, caring, and happy family. The alarm clock went off, and Jerry Sr. turned over to hug his wife. “Good morning, beautiful.” “Is it morning already? I was just beginning to enjoy my sleep.” “Don’t worry, my love. I am certain that Junior will take a nap, and you can get
yourself a nap or two.” “I doubt if I sleep. It is always something to do around here,” she replied as she curled up closer to her husband. “I can just hold you all day and never let you go,” said Jerry. “That would be nice, but what about when you have to use the bathroom?” she asked. “I will not eat or drink. That way, I will not have a reason to move,” replied Jerry. “You’re so silly,” laughed Mrs. Wade. “Junior will be getting up in a little while.” “Yeah, let me get up and get my shower. Duty calls and I must answer. Don’t you want to me?” said Jerry. “It’s only a quarter after six, and Junior normally gets up around seven or seven thirty.” “You don’t have to ask me twice,” she replied as she leaped out of bed. The water from the shower ran down Jerry’s back as he caressed his wife’s skin. “I love the way your body feels against my skin. You’re the most beautiful woman on earth. I can’t imagine being with anyone else. I knew you were the one for me when we first met. Now turn around and give me some tongue.” His wife turned around and they began to kiss. He put his masculine arms around her and lifted her up. He began to massage her nipples with his tongue, and she began to moan. She grabbed his shoulders as they began to make love in the shower. From picking her up to bending her over to picking her up again. Jerry could never get enough of his wife’s loving. Mrs. Wade got dressed and went down to make breakfast. She cooked homemade pancakes, eggs, and bacon. As she finished, she heard someone running down the hallway. “Mommy, Mommy,” said Junior. “Awww, good morning, my handsome young man. How are you this morning? Are you okay?” asked Mommy.
“Uh-huh. Pancake, pancake, pancake,” sang Junior. “All right, let’s get you some breakfast,” said Mommy. Just as she was getting him breakfast, his father came out of nowhere and picked him up and began swinging him in the air. “Dada, Dada, Dada,” said Junior as he laughed out loud. “How’s my big boy doing?” asked Jerry. “Good,” replied Junior as he clapped his hands. “I’m the happiest dad in this world because I have you as my son. Are you going to be good with Mommy today?” asked Dada. “Yahhh!” replied Junior as he stuffed his mouth with pancakes. “Hold up now. Don’t stuff your mouth, son. You have plenty of time to eat. I don’t want you to get choked and hurt yourself,” Dada said as he wiped Junior’s mouth. “That’s right, son,” said Mom. “Please take your time.” “Here’s your plate, babe. Don’t want you going out on an empty stomach,” Londynn said. “You’re simply the best,” replied Jerry. They both sat around, ate breakfast, and laughed at Junior as he ate his breakfast. He made a mess everywhere, but they loved every minute of it. Soon it was time for Dada to go to work. “I will see you both later on, especially you, my little man. We have to go for our daily drive and do men things,” said Dada. “Yahhh!” screamed Junior. He was always excited to go for a ride with his father. His father always promised to be the best husband, father, and man he could possibly be. He kept God first in everything he did. He didn’t have any family around him. Both of his parents were deceased, and he was an only child. Londynn’s parents were still alive, and they visited them as often as they could.
They were both in their sixties. Her father had been sick for a while, and her mom was doing the best she could to keep him from going to a nursing home. He was a diabetic and had to have one of his legs amputated. She was an only child as well. That was one reason they both wanted to have a huge family, because they were lonely growing up without any siblings. Jerry got in from work around 5:15 p.m., and Junior ran right into his arms as he opened the door. “Ride, ride, ride,” said Junior. “All right, buddy. Can I greet Mommy first?” said Jerry as he picked him. “He’s always excited to see his dada. I guess because he is stuck in here with me all day doing nothing,” laughed Londynn. “How was your day?” “It was good, but now it’s even better that I’m home with my family. I love you both so much,” said Jerry as he kissed his wife. “You sure know how to make a girl feel good, huh,” said Londynn. “Well, baby, it’s the truth. I am going to take my little man for a ride, and I’ll be back so you can go for a ride later on,” whispered Jerry. “See. I told you that you were crazy, but I love you too, babe. See you guys when you get back. I will prepare dinner. Be safe out there.” “All right, Mama, see you later,” replied Jerry. “Tell Mommy see you later, little man.” “Later, Mommy,” said Junior as he ran to his father’s truck. They got in the truck and drove around town as usual. “Do you want to go see Big Al at the fire station like we did last time? Maybe he will give you a hat you can keep this time,” laughed his father. “Yahhh,” said Junior as he clapped his hands. Jerry turned on Oak Street and drove up to Garrad Road and went to the fire
station. Big Al was standing outside with a Coke in his hand and smoking a cigarette. “What’s going on, Jerry? I see you got Junior with you again. Let me put this smoke out because they say secondhand smoke will kill you faster than it will me,” said Big Al. “You’re fine, bro,” said Jerry. “How are things going for you guys up here?” “Everything straight. Same o’ same o’, just a different day,” replied Big Al. “I understand that. How’s the business treating you and your family?” asked Jerry. “Man, you know what? I can’t complain. I am truly blessed, and I wouldn’t change a thing. Wife is happy. She is at home every day doing nothing. Just free to go and do as she pleases. If she is happy, you know I don’t have any complaints,” laughed Big Al. “I know what you mean. I do not want my wife to work. I always felt like a man should provide for his family. The woman should stay home and cook for her husband and take care of the house. I work, take care of the bills, the outside of the house, and I help with the laundry. I do not expect her to do everything around the house because she is not my maid. You feel me, bro?” said Jerry. “I know exactly what you mean,” replied Big Al. “She is my wife, and I love her, and I respect her. I value her and know her worth. Man, when I met Londynn, I felt like I hit the lottery, man. There is no other woman out there worth me losing my family over, and this li’l man right here. Oh my god, he gives me life, man,” said Jerry. “Fo sho, dawg. That’s real talk right there, bro. I love that about you, and that’s why I like to talk to you. You keep it real with me at all times,” replied Big Al. “Hey, Junior, want to go for a ride in the fire truck and see what kind of noise it can make? You might scare a few people, but they will be all right. We got this.” “Yahhh,” said Junior as he jumped up and down. “Are you down to ride, Jerry?” asked Big Al.
“Now you know if my boy going, I am going,” laughed Jerry as he picked Junior up and walked toward the truck. “Hey, Junior, you can’t go for a ride without your fire cap on and your badge. You have to let everyone know that you’re a firefighter now,” said Big Al. “You can take that home to show your mom too.” Junior was super excited, and his father was too; just to see the look on his son’s face made his heart smile. Big Al started the engine up, and Junior clapped his hands, jumping in his dad’s lap. “Okay, son, calm down,” laughed Jerry. “It’s okay. Children always get excited about riding in the big red truck,” said Big Al. They drove around town, and Junior was very excited with his firefighter hat on. Big Al was a popular guy in the community who did everything he could to help anyone. Jerry was one of his best friends, and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for him or his family. They went to school together and kept in touch throughout the years. “Well, we’re back where we started,” said Big Al. “Did you enjoy the ride, Junior?” asked Big Al. “Yahhh!” yelled Junior. “Thanks, man. I really appreciate you,” said Jerry. “Anytime, you know we’re good friends. I’m always happy to help and see children smile. Especially my li’l nephew. You all can come by anytime, and I will be glad to take him riding,” replied Big Al. “It’s time to go home, Junior. What do you say? Mommy is waiting for us,” said Jerry. “Yahhh!” yelled Junior. “Take care, Big Al. We’ll see you soon,” said Jerry.
“All right, be careful out there,” replied Big Al. Jerry and Junior got in the truck and drove off. They stopped by the supermarket to get ice cream for dessert. Junior loved vanilla ice cream, and Jerry got him some sprinkles to go on top. When they got home, Londynn had the table set, and the food was ready to eat. “It sure does smell good in here,” said Jerry. “What are we having?” “Thank you. We’re having mac and cheese, fried chicken, cabbage, corn bread, and green beans,” answered Londynn. “Oh my, let’s go wash up, Junior, so we can eat this delicious meal,” said Jerry. They ate, and Jerry got Junior ready for bed as his wife cleaned the kitchen. He ran his bathwater and got him dressed, so when Londynn was done, all she could do was get her bath and relax. “Dinner was delicious, baby. You are the best cook in the world. You are my angel on earth. I would not have it any other way. You’re my dream come true,” said Jerry. “You’re such a sweetheart, and I am loving every moment of this,” replied Londynn. They lay in the bed cuddling and watching Netflix. It was like a fairy tale. Londynn had everything she ever wanted, and Jerry was always making her smile. “Hey, babe, you know Junior’s birthday is in a few days,” said Londynn. “Yeah, I know. We’re about to have a three-year-old,” replied Jerry. “I am loving every second of watching him grow up. He really brightens up my day. I am going to make sure he never has to want for anything. Well, none of our children. I am super excited about making more babies with you. Mmmmmmm. Mmmmm. You still give me butterflies whenever you walk into the room,” replied Jerry. “Same here, babe. I am ready to see the world with you,” said Londynn.
Jerry grabbed his wife and pulled her closer to him. They had dreams of becoming a big family and were always striving to reach perfection. Although they knew they’d never reach perfection, they tried. Jerry was a very religious man and was raising his family to be the same way. Life was too short to be anything but happy. He knew tomorrow was not a promise to anyone. Therefore, he lived his life trying to make every second count. He did not like to argue, and he hated chaos. He was a very humble man and never bothered anyone. He went to work and church and came home to his family. The week seemed to go by very rapidly. It was Thursday already. Jerry got up and got dressed for work as usual, and Londynn went to prepare breakfast. Junior came running through the house as he did very morning, excited to see his parents. They never knew of any children getting up and running through the house bright and early in the morning like their son. They expected for him to lie there in the bed and wait for them to come and pick him up, but he always came running to them. They always knew when he didn’t feel well because that would be the time he would not come out his room. Junior spent the day with his mom running around in the park. He loved to go to the park. His mom always met her friend, and she had a two-year-old son as well. They played in the sand and ran around, sweating and getting dirty. They stayed at the park for an hour and a half. When they left the park, Londynn took Junior home to get him cleaned up and to put on some more clothes. When they finished, she took him to McDonald’s to get a happy meal. They sat in and ate because it was very hot outside. After they ate, Londynn got them both some ice cream, but Junior fell asleep before he could finish eating his ice cream. She grabbed the container and put it in the cup holder so it would not spill on the floor of the car. When they got home, she put him down and went to take a nap herself. They had a pretty exciting day, and it was time to rest. When she got up, it was exactly 4:50 p.m., and Junior was still sleeping. She had slept for a little over four hours. She went to the kitchen to see what she could take out to cook. She figured that since Jerry would be home soon, it would be best to take out some fish fillet. She decided to cook fish, spaghetti, and coleslaw and bake some garlic bread. It wouldn’t take long at all, she thought to herself. After all, she was well rested. By that time, she heard footsteps running down the hallway. “Hi, Mama’s big boy. You will be three years old on tomorrow, and I have a
huge surprise for you,” said his mom. “Yahhh!” said Jerry as he clapped his hands. “Can you show me three fingers?” asked his mom. “Three,” said Jerry as he held up three fingers. His mom kissed him and told him he was her little Superman. He jumped up and down with joy. She picked him up and kissed him on his jaw. “Dada, Dada, Dada,” said Junior. “Calm down, sweetheart. Dad will be home soon.” “Did I hear someone say Dada?” said a voice coming from down the hallway. “Dada, Dada!” yelled Jerry as he leaped out of his mother’s arms and ran into the living room, meeting his father halfway. “How’s my little man doing today?” asked his father. “All riiiiggghhhtttt!” screamed Jerry. “Hi, baby,” his father said as he kissed his wife. “How was the rest of your day at work?” asked his mom. “It was all right, but better now that I am home with my family. I missed you all day,” replied his father. “I missed you today as well. You’re the best man a girl could ever ask for. I thank God for my little family every day,” said his mother. “I know exactly what you mean,” replied his father as he hugged and kissed his wife. “Since you are home, I’ll go get dinner started,” said his mom. “Well, Junior and I are going to go for our daily ride, and we will back shortly. It will not be too long this time. I promise,” said Jerry.
“Okay, take your time. I will just prepare everything and will finish when you all get back. I know you do not want your food to be cold,” Londynn replied. Jerry and Junior left to go on their daily ride around town. This time, Jerry took Junior riding around the countryside and listened to him as he laughed and talked. He did not know what Junior was saying sometimes, but he sure did enjoy the time they spent together. They rode around for about thirty minutes and went back home. “Honey, we’re back,” said Jerry. “Okay, I will go ahead and finish getting dinner together,” said Londynn. “Okay, baby, if you need me, we’ll be in here watching TV,” replied Dad. Mom went in the kitchen and prepared dinner. She set the table, and everyone took their rightful place and had a good time. Dad put Jerry in the tub, and they both tucked him in bed. “You’re so good with him,” said his mom. “No, we are,” replied his father. “We are a team.” “Every day I fall deeper and deeper in love with you,” his mother said to his father. “The feeling is mutual because I fall deeper for you every second of my life,” replied his father. The next day, they took Jerry to Chuck E. Cheese for his birthday. He had a great time. He ran around the place more than anything. He would grab his father’s hand and drag him along. His mom took plenty of pictures to put in his scrapbook with the rest of his things. “All right, you guys, it’s time for the gifts,” said Mom. “Toy, toy, toy, toy!” said Jerry. “All right, let’s see what kind of toy you have,” said his father.
“What’s inside of this big box?” asked Mom. “Superman,” said Jerry. “Let’s see,” replied Dad. They helped Jerry open the box, and it was a Superman big wheel. He jumped up and down with joy. They laughed and asked him if he wanted to open the rest of his gifts. He was too busy playing with the big wheel. His mom got him to open a small box. Jerry looked at the picture frame. It was a picture of a sonogram. “You’re about to be a big brother. Mommy is going to have another baby.” He jumped up and down, clapping his hands. “Oh my god, baby, are you serious? Why you didn’t tell me?” asked his father. “I wanted it to be a surprise. I wanted to tell you both at the same time,” replied his mom. “This is something else to celebrate. Cake and ice cream please!” said his father. They enjoyed the rest of their day out. His father catered to his mom as always. This time, he would not let her lift anything, but he did everything, absolutely everything, for her. When they got home, Jerry was fast asleep. His father washed him up and tucked him in bed. He then ran his wife’s bathwater and washed her back, then lotioned her up and massaged her feet. His father was such a gentleman. He did everything he could for his family because without them, he felt as if he had nothing. He told his wife and his son he loved them every day. Sometimes four or five times a day. He was a man of his word, and he worked hard to provide for his family. The next day, his father got up and cooked breakfast. He cooked his wife’s favorite, which included cheese grits, grilled cheese, eggs, and sausage. He made Junior his pancakes. The aroma in the house woke Londynn up, and she was ready to eat. She got up and freshened up and went straight to the kitchen. “Oh wow, good morning, baby. What’s the occasion?” asked Londynn. “I love my wife and my children,” replied Jerry.
By that time, Superman came running through the house. “Good morning, Junior,” said his mom. “How did you sleep last night, my big boy?” “Goooooddddd!” said Junior. “Pancake, pancake, pancake,” he chanted. “All right, all right, all right, let me get you your pancakes,” said his father. Junior got his pancakes and had syrup everywhere as he stuffed his mouth. “I have a surprise for my family today, but first things first, let’s finish eating and get dressed. We can’t go out of the house smelling bad,” laughed his father. His mother laughed, and they all ate. Little Jerry played with his sausage, but he ate his pancakes. His dad picked him up and got him ready. “All right, is everyone ready to go?” asked his father. “Yaaahhh,” said Jerry. “Mama, Mama, Mama.” “I’m coming,” replied his mom, walking up the hallway. Dad locked up and made sure everyone was buckled down, and they began driving down the highway. “I just want to say thank you for being my wife, and I really appreciate you. Thank you for being the mother of my children, and I am looking forward to spending forever with you,” said Jerry. “Awwww, that’s so sweet. I appreciate you as well, babe. I couldn’t imagine living in this world without you by my side. I love you,” replied Londynn. “I love you more,” said Jerry. Suddenly, a car came out of nowhere and hit their vehicle. Jerry was in the back seat unharmed but crying out when authorities arrived. They looked in the front seats at his parents and knew that something was wrong. The paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene. They took Jerry to the hospital to be examined and had to find the next of kin, or he would be placed in foster care. Everything happened so fast. Jerry had just turned three and lost his parents because of a drunk driver. The driver survived and only suffered from few minor scratches. The police found the sonogram in the car and learned that Jerry’s mom
was pregnant. The driver didn’t die but was sent to prison for the death of his parents and unborn sibling. He was left in the hands of his maternal grandparents, who did the best they could to raise him. Jerry cried for days because he missed his parents. His grandmother was getting very frustrated with him. She told him he had to act right because she was doing the best she could to take care of him and his grandfather. He went from being a happy little boy to a mean and stubborn child. He wanted his parents and did not understand why he did not see them anymore. He began to really act out and did not do what he was told. At the age of four, he pushed his grandfather down the stairs into the basement because he did not let him go outside in the rain. His grandfather broke his left ankle, and his grandmother was furious because he already had an amputated leg. She spanked him, but that didn’t do any good. Jerry only got worse. His grandmother thought it would be a good idea to sign him up for Head Start. She felt that if he got involved with more children, his behavior would change. She really wanted to see her grandson happy. Jerry was excited about his first day of school. He did not waste any time getting up to get dressed and getting on the school bus for the first time. His first day of school was fun because they only played and ran around. The teacher gave them a name tag to wear around their neck every day to help everyone’s name. The first week went by okay, but when the second week came along, Jerry began to get into trouble when things did not go his way. They called his grandparents, and they did all they could to help him. It seemed as if there was no hope for Jerry. The year went by quick, and the teachers were glad that Jerry was no longer in their class. It’s sad when you are only four years old and get in trouble repeatedly. It was almost Jerry’s birthday, and his grandparents put something together for him at their house. Jerry did not enjoy his party because it rained out, and he could not go out and play. There were about four other children there, and Jerry did not like them at all. He tried to fight all of them. They were his neighbors from next door, and they never got along. His birthday party was cut short, and he had to sit quietly in the living room.
The next day, Jerry got up and ate breakfast. He sat at the breakfast table wondering what kind of trouble he could get into. “Hey, put those down, young man,” said his grandfather. “No,” replied Jerry. He broke his grandfather’s eyeglasses and knocked his coffee mug off the table. He told his grandmother that his grandfather broke the mug because he couldn’t see where he was going. She asked him if he was being funny and what was going on with him. He yelled out, “I hate it here! I hate it here!” “Calm down. You are just a baby,” said his grandmother. “I want my mommy and daddy!” yelled Jerry. “You just turned five years old yesterday, and you weren’t happy at your birthday party. We are doing the best we can. We don’t have a lot of money,” said his grandmother. “I want my mommy and daddy. I hate being here!” Jerry yelled repeatedly. His grandmother immediately got in her car and drove down to social services. She told them that they had done all they could to help their grandson, but they were too old to handle him by themselves. He needed to be placed in a foster home with someone who could take better care of him. The social worker began to work on finding a home for Jerry. She understood that two sixty-year-old grandparents could not handle a toddler, especially his grandparents, because his grandmother was already trying to take care of her husband. Jerry’s grandparents did all they could to make sure he was loved and cared for, but that was not enough. His grandparents began to wonder what was going on with him. Why was he acting out at such an early age? He was only five years old. The social worker went over to Jerry’s grandparents that Friday afternoon. He was asleep. She told his grandparents that she had found a couple to take him in. They had a five-year-old daughter, and they wanted a son. His grandparents did not hesitate to pack his things and send him on his way. It was the best night they had had in years.
The first night at his new foster home, Jerry did not sleep well. He was up most of the night yelling, and that scared his new sister. His new foster parents tried to reassure him that everything was going to be all right. The second night, he destroyed his sister’s dolls and dollhouse. She was very upset. His parents made him apologize. The third night, he pushed his sister down the stairs. She broke her right arm, and that was the last straw. His foster parents took him back to the social worker. Jerry was rebellious and needed to be punished. Jerry’s behavior did not change over the years. He was ed from one foster home to another. At the age of fifteen, he was adopted by Johnny and Emma Bentley. They could not have children of their own. They heard of how rebellious he was and how everyone turned their back on him and did not want to give him a chance. They immediately chose him and felt the need to shower him with love and attention. On their way home, Jerry’s new dad told him that he was going to teach him how to drive because he was at the age where he would soon need some driver’s license. Jerry was very happy. “Oh wow. Thank you,’’ said Jerry. He thought to himself, This is the best news I’ve heard all my life. Jerry was in the ninth grade at Ruleville Central High School. His grandmother always checked on him. She never let him go too far where she did not know where he was. Although she could not raise him, she still wanted the very best for him. She was happy to see that Jerry was smiling for a change. That was something she hadn’t seen in years. Jerry never really saw her checking on him, but she was always there. After all, he was her only grandchild. All he knew was she sent money for his birthday and Christmas no matter where he was.
Chapter 2
Falling in Love
Jerry went to class and did his work every day. He met this young lady name Tammy Taylor. She was his best friend. She was the most beautiful young lady he had ever met in his life. Whenever she came around, he would get butterflies and couldn’t stop smiling. He asked her out, and she told him she was not ready to take that step. He was very disappointed about her response. He walked away and did not talk to her for a week. Tammy was a very smart young lady. She made straight A’s, was on the track team and basketball team, and played softball. She was very popular and an allaround people person. She never got into any trouble and did not want to be associated with troublemakers. Her parents were very proud of her. She had her own hall of fame that her parents made at their home. They had her picture blown up and placed in the middle section of their hallway that had been cut out. It looked as if it could have been a closet; but her father had shelves put in, and it was full of her accomplishments. He parents loved to show it off whenever they had company. Tammy noticed that Jerry had been keeping distance from her, and every time she came down the hallway, he would turn and go the other way. She wondered what was going on with him. She approached him that Friday afternoon and asked him what was wrong with him. “What do you think is wrong with me? I was embarrassed when you turned me down. So I thought it would be best if I avoided you for a while,” said Jerry. “Things do not have to be this way. We can still talk and conversate like we have been doing,” replied Tammy. “It’s not the same. Once you ask someone out and they turn you down, that’s a
hard pill to swallow. Look at you. You’re beautiful, smart, beautiful… OMG… You’re beautiful,” said Jerry. “I appreciate the compliment and all, but I have to stay focused on my work right now. I do not need any distractions right now. You do understand that, right?” asked Tammy. “Yeah, I understand,” replied Jerry. She told him that they were just starting high school and had plenty of time to date. He smiled and apologized to her. They hugged and were best friends again. The ninth-grade dance was approaching, and Tyler Townsend approached Tammy in the hallway to ask her to be his date. “Hi, Tammy, do you have a date for the school dance?” asked Tyler. “Hi, Tyler, no, not at the moment. I am not sure if I will be attending right,” said Tammy. “If you make your mind up, will you let me know?” asked Tyler. “I would love to go with you.” “Sure, I will think about it and let you know,” replied Tammy. Jerry was standing right behind Tammy at his locker. He was very upset because he was going to ask her to be his date. “Now I know you are not going to go to the dance with him when I have been trying to get you to go on a date with me ever since I laid eyes on you,” Jerry said in a hostile voice. “I think you need to calm down because I did not give him a definite yes. The way you’re acting, I know I would not want you to be my date,” replied Tammy as she walked off. Jerry was furious because he really liked Tammy, but she would not give him the time of day. “She is too busy in her studies, she said,” Jerry murmured to himself, “but she is considering going to the dance with Tyler. Okay, I got something for her.
He looked up and saw Latisha walking down the hall. She was a cheer leader and very, very hot. Boys flocked to her like bees on a honey tree. So he decided to approach her. “Excuse me, Latisha. Do you have a date to the dance yet? I am quite sure you have plenty of options lined up,” said Jerry. “Hi, I am surprised you even noticed me. You have never said anything to me before. I always have liked you, but you have never noticed me. I am in total shock right now,” replied Latisha. “Stop playing, girl. I always see different guys around you,” replied Jerry. “That does not mean anything. Yeah, a lot of guys try to talk to me, but that does not mean I am interested or dating any of them,” Latisha said. “I have been waiting for this moment for a long time.” “I can’t believe what I am hearing right now. So that means you will be my date to the dance?” asked Jerry. “Of course I will,” replied Latisha. “Why not?” “So can I have your number so I can call you later and we can discuss the details of our date?” asked Jerry. “Of course you can, but you can start off by walking me to class,” said Latisha. “Why not?” Jerry responded. He began to feel as if his luck had changed. He no longer had to bother Tammy anymore about going out with him. He had a date to the dance with someone who really liked him. That evening when he got home, he called Latisha right after he had his bath. “Hello,” Latisha answered. “Hi, this is Jerry. How are you?” “I am better now. I thought you weren’t going to call,” replied Latisha. “What made you think something like that?” asked Jerry.
“It is after seven, and we’ve been out of school,” replied Latisha. “I was just doing everything I needed to do so when I called, you would have my undivided attention,” Jerry said in a soft voice. “I did not want to call you and have to put you on hold to do anything.” “Oh, okay, it’s like that. Make me feel like I am important then,” laughed Latisha. “What do you mean? I am not a rude person,” said Jerry. “I didn’t think you are. If I did, I would not have agreed to go to the dance with you,” replied Latisha. Time ed, and they talked on the phone for about an hour and a half. They learned a lot about one another. Before they knew it, it was almost 9:00 p.m., and Latisha had to get her bath so she could go to bed. The next day at school, Jerry was waiting on her to come out of her homeroom so he could walk her to class. Tammy saw them walking and spoke to them, but Jerry ignored her and acted as if he did not hear her. Latisha spoke to her and nudged Jerry and asked him why he was being rude. He told her he did not hear her because he was so focused on her. He turned around and spoke to Tammy but quickly turned back around and put his arm around Latisha, and they walked down the hallway. Tammy felt that he was trying to make her jealous, but she did not care. She walked on to class as usual and concentrated on her work. After class, she told Tyler that she thought about it and she would be his date for the dance. She really did not want to go, but since Jerry thought he was doing something, she thought that she should turn the table. The dance wasn’t until later that school year in April. For Valentine’s Day, Jerry had them to deliver balloons, flowers, a basketful of treats, and a dozen of roses to the school for Latisha. She was so happy and shocked because she was not expecting it. They called Latisha to the office over the intercom, and she immediately got up and walked out, not knowing what she was walking into. Tammy was ing by when she noticed Jerry standing in the office, giving Latisha her gifts. She thought that was very sweet of him and was happy for them. She missed talking to Jerry, but she was happy he got what he was looking for.
After school, Jerry gave Tammy a card and a rose and told her Happy Valentine’s Day. The card read,
Dear Tammy,
Thank you for being a good friend. Although things did not work out the way I expected, I will always be here for you. I know we have not been talking like we use to, and I apologize. I will do better. Have a good day.
Your friend, Jerry
She thought that was sweet of him. She thanked him and gave him a hug. By that time, Latisha was coming out and asked Jerry if he could help her get her things to her mom’s car because it was too much for her to carry. Tammy wished them well and walked away. Jerry helped Latisha get her things to her mom’s car. Her mom was in total shock when she saw everything he had bought for her daughter. “So this is the young man you have spent countless hours on the phone with,” said her mom. “Hi, how are you? My name is Jerry Wade, and it’s nice to meet you,” replied Jerry. “It is nice to meet you as well, young man,” her mom replied. “I will call you later on, okay?” said Jerry. “You all be safe out there.” “Okay, and thank you,” Latisha replied. They hugged and she got in the car. Jerry left, walking down the street, and ran into Tammy coming out of the corner
store with an orange soda in her hand. “Hey, do you want me to walk you home?” asked Jerry. “I am okay. I can manage. I thank you for everything,” replied Tammy. “No problem. You know you will always be my first choice. I still care about you,” said Jerry. “It’s nice to know coming from someone who is in a whole relationship with another person,” laughed Tammy. “I know how that must sound, and you are totally right,” said Jerry. “I still have feelings for you. They just don’t go away. To be honest, I have been trying to make you jealous thinking you would give in and say you want to be with me.” “It does not work that way,” Tammy replied. “When you like someone, you do not try to make them jealous by being with someone else. You respect their decision and be there for that person. I did not go and start a relationship with anyone. I am trying focus on my future and a scholarship to some college. Times are hard, and I am trying to learn everything I can. If you can’t respect how I feel, and I see that you could not, then you are not who I thought you were.” “Oh wow,” said Jerry. “I apologize if I came off like that. I just wanted you so bad until I did not realize what was really happening. I am sorry, and I will do better.” “You don’t understand how you can hurt Latisha right now, do you?” asked Tammy. “She does not deserve to be treated the way you are treating her. If you like her, make it work, and if we are meant to be, fate will bring us together. With that being said, stop saying how you feel about me as long as you are in a relationship with someone else.” “You’re right, Tammy. I am sorry,” replied Jerry. “Let me make sure you get home safe, and we will remain friends. For now, at least,” laughed Jerry. “I’m not playing,” said Tammy. “All right, all right, all right. So how are things going with you? We have a lot of catching up to do,” replied Jerry.
Jerry walked Tammy home, and they had a friendly conversation all the way there. When he got home, he talked to his foster dad about Tammy. He gave him a real good advice, and he was pleased. He told him he should respect her opinion and give her the space she wanted. At the same time, he should not let her forget how he felt about her. He wrote her a nice letter and bought her flowers. When Jerry turned sixteen, he got his permit, then his driver’s license. He was overwhelmed with joy. His dad would let him drive the car whenever he wanted to. He was very respectful and did everything they asked him to do. Latisha’s father got a promotion on his job, but it meant they had to relocate to another state. She did not want to go because she had fallen in love with Jerry. They had been dating for a year and a half. When she told him the news, he was hurt because he was starting to develop some feelings for her. They went on their last date and promised to keep in touch. Jerry hugged and kissed her and told her that she could always count on him. She cried because he was her first love even though they never took it to the next level. She really cared about him. That was what made it special. He never asked her about sex, and all they ever did was hug and kiss. The year was coming to an end. Jerry was getting ready to be a junior in high school and was back to being single. He was doing really well in his studies, and his parents were very proud of him. Tammy was still single and turning guys down left and right. Jerry knew that with Latisha out of the picture, it was time to make his move. He felt as if it was nothing but fate that made that happen because he could not see himself breaking her heart. He cared too much for her. Although he cared for her, his heart was always with Tammy. His mom taught him how to cook before he turned seventeen. He asked his parents if it was okay if he cooked and invited Tammy over for dinner. He talked to Tammy the next day at school and asked her about her favorite food and dessert. She asked him why. He told her because he wanted to know everything about her. He invited her over for dinner that night. He told her that he had a special surprise for her. When she arrived, Tammy was very impressed. He had candles lit on the table, and his parents sat outside, enjoying the cool breeze. Tammy was not expecting this. They had been best friends for two years and never crossed the friend line. “So this is why you asked me those questions,” said Tammy. “You had your mom to cook for me. Oh how sweet.”
“My mom. I hate to disappoint you, but I cooked everything myself. I learned from my mom,” replied Jerry. “I really like you. I have loved you since the first time I laid eyes on you.” Tammy was speechless. He had orange soda and her favorite chocolate on chocolate cake. He fixed spaghetti and meatballs, with pork chops and corn bread. She was very impressed. “You have really touched my heart with this one. No one has ever gone this length to get my attention. I it, I am flattered,” said Tammy. “I should have thought of this two years ago then,” laughed Jerry. Jerry said grace and they began to eat. “Everything is delicious,” said Tammy. “Thank you. Eat all you want, and you can even take carryouts home with you.” They laughed and talked for about two hours. “I can help you clean this up,” said Tammy. “Don’t worry about it. I can handle it. You need me to take you home?” asked Jerry. “You have done enough. My mom is coming to get me. I really appreciate all that you have done. You can really cook, and I am not going to leave my carryout,” laughed Tammy. “Please, take all you want. After all, I cooked this for you,” replied Jerry. When her mom came, Jerry walked her out to the car and they hugged. She introduced him to her mom, and Jerry told them both to have a good night. He went in and washed the dishes and cleaned the kitchen. He mopped the floor and went upstairs to get his bath. He felt good about everything and felt positive that he was heading on the right track with Tammy. Jerry walked her home every day, and they even became study buddies. Jerry did not pressure her into anything. He felt if it was meant to be, then it would happen. Every day he would walk her to class. They ate lunch together, and he even walked her home after school on the days her mom did not come to pick her up.
He was falling deeper and deeper in love with her. When other girls tried to talk to him, he made it clear that he did not want to be in a relationship with anyone but Tammy. They laughed at him and called him crazy because he was walking her to class and home after school and they weren’t even a couple. He ignored them and kept doing what he was doing. For Christmas that year, he gave Tammy a promise ring. It was just signifying that whatever happened in life, no matter whom she was with, he would always be there for her. She thanked him, and their bond grew even stronger. “Jerry, you really didn’t have to buy me anything for Christmas. You could have spent your money on something else,” said Tammy. “I know, I know, but I wanted to give you this. I want you to know just how special you are to me,” replied Jerry. Tammy thanked him and gave him a hug. She even gave him a kiss on the cheek. He was so excited he didn’t know what to do. He tried to hold it together on the outside, but he felt like a kid in the candy store on the inside. Tammy was his ideal soul mate, and he was willing to wait for her for as long as he had to wait. He was more focused on his grades because she was there to help him. They both made the superintendent’s list the first and second nine weeks. Tammy was very impressed because he was totally focused on his work. He went to all of her games. He did not miss a second of any of her accomplishments. He kept up with her schedule better than she did. She really had developed feelings for him but did not want to come out and say it. If another girl talked to him, she felt herself getting a little jealous, but she never itted it. Deep down on the inside, she wanted Jerry all to herself. She felt the exact same way for him as he felt for her. Little did Jerry know he had withered his way into her heart. It wasn’t until Valentine’s Day of their junior year that Jerry asked her out on a date. He told her that they could go to any restaurant she wanted to go to or he could cook whatever she wanted. “I am not too big on fancy things, but you can just surprise me with dinner,” replied Tammy. “Okay, it’s a date,” said Jerry. “I will come and pick you up if it’s okay with your parents and bring you back to my house.
“That’s not necessary. My mom can drop me off and pick me up. I’m quite sure she would not mind,” replied Tammy. “Whatever pleases you is all right with me,” stated Jerry. “It’s not hard to please me,” replied Tammy. “I’m just an ordinary girl.” Jerry laughed and grabbed her hand and walked her home. They laughed and talked all the way there. When he got home, he talked to his parents about dinner for Tammy. “Mom, I really like Tammy. I wanted to take her out, but she’s not into that. She said I can just cook her a simple meal, and she would be satisfied,” said Jerry. “Well, son, you’re winning because you don’t have to spend a lot of money,” laughed his dad. “Really, old man, I am not worried about any money. I just do not want to mess this up,” replied Jerry. “Follow your heart, and everything will fall in place,” said his mom. “Do you need me to go pick up anything for you?” “How about we all go and you both help me to make this evening a successful one for me?” replied Jerry. “I need all the help I can get,” laughed Jerry. They went to Zales, and he picked out a perfect gift for her. He didn’t want to make it seem as if he was coming on strong, but he really cared about Tammy. When they left the jewelry store, they went to the supermarket. His parents picked out a nice steak and two baked potatoes with all the fixings. He got her favorite orange soda and some chocolate with chocolate syrup and vanilla ice cream. He wanted everything to be perfect. When he got home, he started cooking, and his mom helped him because time was winding down. After everything was just about settled, Jerry went upstairs to take a bath and change into some clean clothes. He sprayed on his cologne and rushed downstairs because he knew Tammy would be there soon. The doorbell rang.
“I’ll get it!” yelled Jerry. He opened the door, and there she was, standing there looking like a beautiful princess. She had on a red skirt and red-and-white top. Her hair was perfectly styled, and she had on some pretty red shoes. Her toenails and fingernails were even painted red. “You’re breathtaking,” said Jerry. “Come on in.” “Thank you,” replied Tammy. “You’re quite the charmer yourself.” She was in awe when she saw how everything was laid out on the table. He pulled her chair out for her and walked around the table to sit in front of her. His parents were leaving out for the night. After all, it was Valentine’s Day, and they wanted to go on a romantic outing themselves. Jerry and Tammy talked and enjoyed the evening. After they ate, he served her dessert, and she loved it. “You have really outdone yourself, Jerry. I am too stuffed. I really thank you. As a matter of fact, I have something for you in my little purse here,” said Tammy. She reached in her purse and pulled out a box perfectly wrapped. “I wasn’t expecting anything,” replied Jerry. “It’s so thoughtful of you. Thank you so much.” He opened the box, and it was some cologne. “Oh wow, thank you, Tammy,” said Jerry. “I really appreciate you thinking of me. I it it caught me by surprise.” “Oh really?” said Tammy, blushing. “Wait, I have something for you as well,” said Jerry. He walked out the room and came back with roses and a bag in his hands. She was smiling from ear to ear. “Jerry, you did not have to do all of this,” Tammy said as she reached out her hands and got the roses, smelling them. “Thank you so much. I love it.” “You haven’t seen what’s inside the bag yet,” said Jerry. “Go ahead and open it.” Tammy put the roses on the table and opened the bag. To her surprise, he bought
her a necklace with matching bracelet and earrings. “Oh, this is beautiful,” said Tammy as tears ran down her cheeks. “Why do you spend so much money? You do not have to keep buying me all of these expensive gifts. We have a long road ahead of us.” “I do not care about the money. I just want you to know that I care a lot about you. As a matter of fact, I love you, Tammy. I have wanted to be with you since the first time I laid eyes on you. There was something special about you. I have been waiting a long time for you to be my girlfriend, my woman. I have not asked in a long time, so on this day, which is Valentine’s Day, will you be my girlfriend?” asked Jerry. She was so happy that immediately she kissed him. “I’ve been waiting on you to ask me out again for a long time,” replied Tammy. “I have developed feelings for you over the last year that I thought I would never have. I have to it, you have grown on me. There is nothing that will make me happier than being with you.” “Really?” said Jerry. “Of course, I mean every word. You have proven yourself to me over and over again. We have become the best of friends, so there is nothing wrong with taking the next step,” said Tammy. They hugged and kissed, then went to sit in the living room to watch a movie. His parents came in a quarter after nine, and her mom picked her up at exactly nine thirty. He walked her to the car. “Thank you for a nice evening,” said Tammy. “I am appreciative of everything.” “You’re welcome. Anything for the woman I love. Have a good night and get home safe,” replied Jerry. “Sure thing. Talk to you later,” said Tammy as she reached in to hug him and kiss him on the cheek. “I will call you when I get home.” “Okay. Hi, Mrs. Taylor. You all drive safe and have a good night, ma’am,” said Jerry. “Thanks, young man, and you do the same,” replied Mrs. Taylor. Jerry stood there and watched them as they drove off. His life had been rough,
but it was finally working itself out and everything seemed to be going great. He had been adopted by the best parents in the world, who had given him a great life. They gave him everything and anything he wanted. He did not have to want for anything. He was doing great in his studies, and he had his driver’s license and a car. He was living the life now that he had the perfect girl. The end of the school year finally came. Jerry thought he would get a summer job to make his own money to help with the expenses of his senior year. He knew there would be a class trip, senior dues, prom, and more things to come up unexpectedly. Tammy was going to be working in a summer program at her church. She would be working with the youth and helping with vacation Bible school as well. Tammy enjoyed going to church, and sometimes, Jerry would go with her. Jerry got a job at Hibbet Sports because his dad’s friend was the manager, and Jerry really wanted to work there. By the end of the summer, Jerry had saved over $2,500. He worked and was getting his allowance as well. He loved to shop, and it was a challenge, but he saved his money. It was the beginning of their senior year, and Jerry was very excited. It was time for the class to pick a king and queen. Tammy asked Jerry if he wanted to run for Mr. and Mrs. RCHS. He didn’t want to at first, but since it was something she really wanted to do, he accepted the challenge. They campaigned together, and for their talent, they did a scene from Romeo and Juliet. When everyone voted, they announced the winners over the intercom. Jerry and Tammy won, and they were super excited. When Jerry got home that evening, he had a visitor. His grandmother was waiting on him. When he walked in, he immediately hugged her. He knew that he had given her a hard time, and she did what she thought was best for him. He apologized to her when she told him about everything and how he was out of control. He always loved it when she came to visit. “Hi, Junior. How are you?” asked his grandma. “I am all right, Grandma. How are you?” replied Junior. “I’ll do for an old lady,” laughed his grandma. “You know I am in my seventies now, and seeing you grow into this remarkable young man has really made me proud. I came because I have some information to share with you. When your parents died, they left a policy for you. It is in a CD that you cannot touch until
you turn twenty-one. It is also an that had $40,000 in it, but over the years, it has drawn interest. Now that you are seventeen years old, the bank statement says there is $250,000 in it. You are free to touch that when you graduate high school. Now the CD has $1 million in it. Your father owned his own company, and when he died, another company bought his company by sending a check for you because if anything ever happened to him, the proceeds would go to you and your mom. Even though you have all of this money, I want you to continue going to school and work hard just like your father did. You’re a very wealthy man at a very young age. It is all about how you manage your money.” “Oh wow, Grandma. This is all so much to take in right now. I am grateful, but I would trade all of that money in to have my parents back with me,” said Jerry. His grandmother pulled out a box with two photo albums in it. They were pictures of him and his parents when he was born until they were taken from him. Jerry looked at the pictures, and immediately, tears began to rush down his cheeks. He really missed his parents. He could tell by the pictures that his parents really loved him. He was a blessed child, but his heart ached. He hugged and cried on his grandmother’s shoulder. She talked to him and told him he never had to worry about anything. He was loved, and she knew his parents wanted the best for him. He could honor their memory by working hard and being successful. She told him how his father worked hard and his mom took care of the house. When his father got off work, he would help her take care of him and take him riding every evening. She also told him about the last party they had together as a family and how excited he was when he found out he was going to be a big brother. Jerry and his grandmother talked for over an hour. He even offered her some of the money because he thought it was very nice of her to come over and give it to him. She could have kept it as a secret and decided not to tell him because of how bad he was as a child. She told him that she could never take anything from him. His parents left that for him, and it was up to him to make a good life for himself. His grandmother hugged and told him she had to leave but he was more than welcome to come by and visit her if whenever he got ready. Jerry was overwhelmed because everything seemed to be happening so fast. He asked his adopted parents what they thought he should do with all of his money because it was a lot of money. They told him that it was up to him, and
they agreed with his grandmother. He told them that he was going to give them something for taking him in and taking good care of him. He told them that he couldn’t have made it this far in life without them. They told him that it was his money, and they were being the best parents they could. They thanked him and hugged him and told him all they wanted was for him to be successful and be someone in life. He had already given them what they were missing out of their life. They couldn’t ask for a better son, and they were proud of him. The year went by extremely fast. Jerry kept his grades up and continued to make all A’s. His bond with Tammy grew closer. It was time for their senior prom. Jerry rented a limo and picked Tammy up around 7:00 p.m. The limo pulled up to Tammy’s house, and Jerry walked up to the door. He rang the doorbell and her father answered. “Good evening, young man,” said Mr. Taylor. “Good evening sir,” replied Jerry. “How are you?” “I am doing just fine. I don’t need to lay down the rules for tonight, do I?” said Mr. Taylor. “You have nothing to worry about, sir. I am going to handle her with care. I respect her, and I will not do anything to hurt or disrespect her,” replied Jerry. “I do know that because if you do, you will have to worry about me,” said Mr. Taylor. “That’s my baby girl right there.” “Yes, sir,” replied Jerry. “I understand.” “So we’re good. I do not need to introduce you to a couple of my friends, do I?” asked Mr. Taylor. “No, sir,” replied Jerry. By that time, Tammy was walking in the room. “Come on now, Daddy. Don’t scare him off. He is a good guy,” said Tammy. “I just had to examine him for myself. We haven’t had the chance to have the talk yet,” replied Mr. Taylor.
“All right, Daddy, can we go now?” said Tammy. “You look beautiful. Just stunning,” Jerry said as he gazed upon her beauty. “Thank you so much. You’re looking handsome yourself,” replied Tammy. “Come on, you two. Let’s get some pictures,” said her mom, running into the living room. They posed and took several pictures before they were off to the dance. Her mom was excited and glad to see her baby girl happy. It was a bittersweet moment because it was her last year in school and her senior prom. She wanted to hold on a little while longer, but she knew her daughter had to go out and start her own life. She knew she had to see life for herself. Her parents stood in the doorway and watched them as they walked to the limo, got in, and drove off. “You’re the most beautiful girl I have ever seen,” said Jerry. “Thank you. I appreciate you, baby. You’re so sweet and always complimenting me,” replied Tammy. “Just in case I forget, thank you for a beautiful evening. I really had fun. Anytime I am around you, I have a good time,” said Jerry. “Likewise,” responded Tammy as she leaned over to lie on his shoulder. He held her all the way to the school and was happy to walk in with her. When they got out of the car, all eyes were on them. “Why is everyone staring at us?” asked Tammy. “It’s because they have never seen someone so beautiful and stunning in their life before. You’re the light of my life, and apparently, you’re lighting up the night as beautiful as you are,” replied Jerry. “You always know what to say,” said Tammy. He kissed her, and they walked in the building. “I will go get you some orange soda and grab me something, and I will be right back,” said Jerry. “Now don’t run off and have me looking all over for you.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” replied Tammy. As Jerry walked off, Tyler approached Tammy. “Hi, Tammy, how are you enjoying the night?” “Hi, Tyler, everything is going great. How about yourself?” asked Tammy. “It could be better if you were my girl. You’re so beautiful, Tammy. I’ve wanted you since we were in grade school,” said Tyler. “Tyler, I am…” “She’s taken already. I will appreciate it if you show the both of us some respect and stop hitting on my girlfriend every time I turn my back. You know that’s plain disrespectful!” yelled Jerry. “Calm down, baby. Calm down,” said Tammy softly as she pulled on Jerry’s jacket to make him come on her direction. “No disrespect, but she would have been my lady if you had stayed where you were,” Tyler said to Jerry. “But I’m here, ain’t I? Huh? I’m here, and you better be glad because she was just saved,” replied Jerry. “Go somewhere with that big ole lame suit and ugly shoes on. This is the prom, not a freak show.” “You’re the freak. Walking around here thinking you the man, and you’re not hitting on crap,” replied Tyler. “Who do you think you’re talking to? You don’t know anything about me, son,” said Jerry. “Son…first of all…” “Let’s go on and have fun, baby. We do not have to entertain foolishness. I love you, and that’s all that matters,” said Tammy. She grabbed Jerry’s hand, and they walked off. “You better walk off!” yelled Tyler.
“Keep walking. He’s just jealous,” said Tammy as she held Jerry’s hand, walking down the hallway. The laughed and danced all night long. The night of their graduation, Jerry had a surprise waiting for Tammy. He already asked his dad how to propose and what he should do. He had called Tammy’s parents and talked to them. Therefore, there was only one thing left to do. He made dinner reservations for his family and Tammy’s family at a nice restaurant. When the waitress brought out the dessert, it was Tammy’s favorite, a caramel cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. As Tammy began to take a bite, Jerry got up from his seat. “What are you doing?” asked Tammy as she looked down and saw the diamond in her ice cream. “Meeting you has been the highlight of my life. I have my foster parents, Mr. Johnny and Mrs. Emma Bentley, to thank for that. They adopted me and gave me a good life. They showed me how good it felt to be loved and given a chance to love. You make me smile. You bring me joy. You are my peace and my strength. I do not want to have to imagine life without you. That’s why I must ask you an important question. Tammy LaShae Taylor, will you marry me?” “Yes, yes, yes, yes, I’ll marry you. Oh my god, yes, Jerry.” Jerry placed the ring on her hand, and they hugged and kissed. They seemed to be the perfect couple. In fact, everything seemed perfect. Jerry did not want to wait a year to make plans to get married. They immediately made plans, and on July 17, 2004, they were united together in holy matrimony. It was a private ceremony at Jerry’s parents’ house. Jerry wanted to hurry and did not want to wait another second to marry the love of his life. Although Tammy wanted a big wedding, he wanted to go ahead with it and promised to give her the wedding she wanted later. She agreed and was ready to exchange vows and start their life together.
Chapter 3
Deception
“Tammy, I want to take care of you for the rest of our lives. You bring me joy that I’ve never felt in my entire life,” said Jerry. “Awww, Jerry, you make me so happy. You know how to put a smile on my face,” Tammy replied. “I’m being honest, Tammy. You are my queen. I don’t want you to ask anyone for anything. I am your husband, your man, and I will take care of us,” said Jerry. “Sure thing, baby, but I do want to work too, you know. I want to become an RN and help take care of people,” Tammy replied. “I do not want you to work, baby. I got you. I got us. You can be a stay-at-home mom and see about the house. That’s all you got to do,” Jerry said. “Jerry, I want to go to school. I just can’t sit here and not do anything.” “Okay, but, baby, I do not want you to work full-time. I love you too much. When you finish school, you do not have to find a job immediately.” Tammy applied to the CNA program at MDCC first. She wanted to climb the ladder. It was a six-week program. Tammy graduated with honors. As soon as she graduated, she and Jerry moved to Horn Lake, Mississippi. Jerry’s job transferred him there. He was a welder and got promoted in one of the largest companies in the world. They were only nineteen years old, and everything was looking good. They purchased their first home and bought a new car. “I think I’m going to fill out a few job applications. I’m ready to work now.”
“Okay, Tammy, nothing too hectic. Only a part-time job. I told you, I got us, baby,” said Jerry. “You do not need a full-time job.” “That’s fine with me. Part-time sounds better than full-time.” Tammy laughed. “I’m so blessed to have such an amazing husband like you.” “I told you, I would take care of you,” replied Jerry. Tammy got hired at a nursing home right down the road from where they lived. She met a lot of new people. Jerry surprised her one day and bought her some lunch. When he arrived, Tammy was talking to one of her coworkers who was a male. Jerry became furious because Tammy was smiling. “What is going on here?” asked Jerry. “Oh, hi, baby. This is Jim, and, Jim, this is my husband, Jerry.” Jim extended his hand, but Jerry only stared, being rude. “Nice to meet you,” said Jim as he walked away. “Why was he laughing in your face? What is going on?” “Come on, baby. We were talking about the patient that cursed me out because I’m new. That’s all. It was funny. I’m glad to see you. You know me better than that,” said Tammy. “Better not be anything. I do not like anyone in your beautiful face. Only me,” said Jerry. “Awwww, baby, this is only work. Three days a week. I’m all yours every day. I don’t want anyone else, and you know it,” replied Tammy. They kissed and ate lunch. Jerry acted as if he was leaving but never left the building. He spied on his wife. “Hey, Tammy, you got a second?” yelled Jim. “What’s going on? You need help with a patient or something?” said Tammy. “Oh no. I was trying to make sure everything was fine with you and your
husband. He didn’t seem too thrilled that you and I were having a conversation,” Jim replied. Hitting Jim on the arm, Tammy said, “Oh, we are good. He knows I am only interested in him. No need to worry. He is harmless.” Little did Tammy know her husband was watching her from a distance and did not like what he was seeing. Although it was totally innocent, he did not approve of her talking to another man. Tammy was glad to clock out because it had been a long day. When she walked out of the building, her husband was outside. That was unusual because Tammy drove her car to work. “Do you think I am a fool? I saw you talking to him again,” said Jerry. “Baby, come on. I’m at work. I’m going to talk to people. You have to believe in me.” Jerry was very upset. Even though they stayed right down the road, he waited until Tammy was in her car and followed her home. When they walked in the house, he grabbed Tammy and told her not to ever talk to him again. “What is wrong with you? I have never seen you like this before. What is the problem? Is this why you moved me up here? So you can take advantage of me? I told you I love you, and I will not cheat on you. I have never given you a reason to believe that,” replied Tammy. “Do I look like I was born yesterday?” asked Jerry. “Yesterday! Jerry, have you lost your mind? What has gotten into you?” asked Tammy. “We haven’t been married a year, and this is what I have to deal with. If you cannot stand me talking to anyone, I think we need to go our separate ways.” “If you think for one second I’m letting you go, you better think again,” said Jerry. “I love you, and I am not going to lose you to anyone else.” “Look, I am new at my job. He was only helping me. Something is wrong with you if you have a problem with someone helping me,” replied Tammy. “Okay, think I am playing? I love you, Tammy. I love you to death!” exclaimed
Jerry as he walked off. Tammy was furious because she had never seen Jerry like this before. She went upstairs to get herself a nice hot bath, thinking about her life and what she had gotten herself into. Was she making the worst mistake of her because this man was not the man she had married? What had happened in such a short amount of time? Was she blinded by love or just lust? Whatever it was, it wasn’t right. Time ed, and Tammy became best friends with her coworker Shonda Wilson. Shonda asked Tammy about car pool since they lived two houses apart. Tammy agreed with her because she didn’t think it would be a problem since they had grown very close. She did not know anyone that lived around them. She made sure she talked it over with Jerry, and he was all right with it because Shonda was a female. However, Jerry still had his insecurities. When Tammy wasn’t looking, he would go through her cell phone to see whom she was talking to. He even checked their daily to see what kind of activities she was doing. He volunteered to wash every other day so he could inspect her clothes without her knowledge. Jerry was the true definition of a control freak. Every day Jerry was off, he would spy on his wife. He did not like her talking to any of her male coworkers. Especially when they laughed, and he could see all her teeth. It made him very furious because he did not want anyone getting close to his wife. He thought every male coworker was suspect and looking for something more from his wife. One day, Jim asked Tammy for advice about his girlfriend. He wanted to ask her to marry him and wanted to know the best way to do it. Tammy gave him some advice, and he hugged her. It made Jerry very angry. Jim and Tammy were unaware that they were being watched. Although it was all innocent, Jerry thought otherwise. When Tammy got home, Jerry was waiting on her at the door. “Hi, baby,” said Tammy. “Don’t you ‘hi, baby’ me. I saw you with him. What did I tell you?” asked Jerry. “What do you mean? I have been at work, Jerry,” Tammy replied. “I know. I was there myself, and I saw you and him hugging,” said Jerry.
“He asked me for some advice. He is going to ask his girlfriend to marry him. And furthermore, why were you stalking me at work? Have I given you any reason not to trust me?” asked Tammy. Jerry grabbed Tammy by her throat. “Who do you think you are talking to? You better show me some respect. That man had no business with his hands on you, period. What did I tell you?” He slapped her, and she fell to the floor crying. Then Jerry walked out of the house. Tammy went into the bathroom to clean herself up. Tammy thought to herself, Lord, what did I do wrong? I have never done anything to disrespect my husband. I have honored our marriage vows. Please give me an answer. This is his second time putting his hands on me. Tammy cried and shivered in fear as she sat on the side of their bed. She fixed herself a nice mug of warm tea after she had a nice hot bath. Then she lay down and went to sleep. She woke up the next morning; she realized that she had a black eye. It was her day to drive, but she could not go to work with a black eye. Tammy called in sick, and then she called Shonda. She explained what really happened to Shonda. “Oh my god, are you all right, Tam?” asked Shonda. “I’m okay, Shonda. I just don’t know what has gotten into him. He was not like this when we were back home. He had a temper, but nothing like this. He has always been sweet and protected me. Now that he has moved me away from my family, all he does is hurt me,” cried Tammy. “Awww, Tam, I don’t want to hear you crying like that. You deserve better than that. You’re such a sweet and caring person. Do you need me to come over or call the police?” asked Shonda. “I’ll be all right. Just go to work and enjoy your day. Tell everyone I said hi, and I will be back soon,” replied Tammy. “Okay, Tam. I will take your word for it,” said Shonda. She offered to pray for Tammy and told her to call her if she needed anything. A week ed, and Tammy was able to go back to work. There was a new guy there, and he needed to be trained. Shonda insisted on training him because she
knew Tammy’s husband would not like it. The next day, Malcolm Brandon got hired, and he needed someone to train him as well. He had no other choice but to pair up with Tammy because Shonda did not need two new people with her. Shonda was watching out for Tammy because she did not want her husband getting upset. When Tammy and Malcolm came out of Mr. Brown’s room, there was a strangelooking person sitting in the rocking chair with a newspaper up to his face. He pretended to be reading the paper but looking at them the whole time. Whenever they looked up, he would look down at the paper. He had on a big hat and eyeglasses that looked like shades. “Well, Malcolm, that’s all for now. We need to stock our supply cart because we do not want to run low. After that, you can take a break, and then we have to check on our patients and turn them to their other side,” Tammy said. “Okay, thank you, Mrs. Tammy, for helping me. I really learned a lot from you,” Malcolm replied. He reached in to hug Tammy, but she pulled back and told him that was not necessary and that she was glad she could help him. Her husband smiled and kept his head down. Tammy knew it was him the whole time but walked off as if she had no idea. When Tammy got home, he had purchased her a bouquet of roses, and they were sitting on the table. He apologized to her about the other day and said he was going to do better. They hugged, kissed, and made up. The next morning, Tammy woke up sick. She did not think anything of it; she just thought she was coming down with a cold. There was a knock at the door. “Can I help you?” asked Jerry. Good morning. I’m looking for Tammy. My name is Shonda Wilson, and we work together down at the nursing home. It’s my time to drive, and I was wondering if she is ready to go.” “I’m sorry, but Tammy is not feeling well. She is not going in today,” responded Jerry. “Okay, thank you. Tell her I hope she feels better soon.”
“Sure will,” Jerry replied as he closed the door. “That was your coworker Shonda. I told her you weren’t going in today because you felt sick.” “Jerry, I am going to work. I do not feel that bad. Besides this is my last day until next week. It isn’t going to hurt anything,” said Tammy. “What did I say?” Jerry replied. “You keep missing the part where I speak, and you obey.” “Hold up. Wait a minute. I am your wife, and I can make decisions on my own. I do not need you to think for me, Jerry.” “Woman, have you lost your rabbit mind? Do you realize you are doing what I asked you not to do? Who in the hell do you think you are talking to? You are going to learn today!” “But, Jerry, ____________.” It was too late. He had grabbed her again and choked her and punched her until her nose bled. He then walked off and went to the bathroom and got a towel. He told her to clean herself up and go take a bath. He turned the air all the way down and made her very uncomfortable. She got dressed, and he took all the cover from her bed, all but the fitted sheet and her pillows. “Jerry, what did I do to you?” asked Tammy. “Look. Do not say a word to me,” replied Jerry. “It is cold in here, and you know I just had a bath,” said Tammy. “Does it look like I care?” asked Jerry. “I only work three days a week, and it is a problem with you! You can’t control every aspect of my life. What happened to you?” asked Tammy. “The same thing that happened to you,” replied Jerry. “I never accuse you of anything. I you and take your word for everything!” said Tammy.
“I’m not a liar like you. I listen, and you do not listen. I care about you, and it is my job to tell you what to do, especially when you do the things you do. You do not respect me,” replied Jerry. “That is all a lie!” said Tammy. “So, you still here, talking crap,” replied Jerry. “The least you can do is give me the cover back. It is cold in here,” said Tammy. “I will think about it,” replied Jerry. “Jerry, please,” said Tammy. “Take this and get out of my face,” yelled Jerry. He threw her the sheet. She took it and went into their bedroom. She put on another set of pajamas on top of the ones she had on and another pair of socks. Then she wrapped herself in the sheet, and she began to feel a little warmer. She had on two thick pairs of pajamas, with thick socks, and her skull hat on to keep her head and ears warm. Jerry left for a little while, and she went and got her cover. When he came back, he snatched the covers from her and put them in the living room. She was sleeping good and did not realize what he had done. Later in the middle of the night, she got a little too warm and took the skull hat off. Even though she was being mistreated, she still managed to keep warm and had a good night’s sleep. When Jerry left the house, he took the house phone with him as well as her cell phone. Tammy cried her poor eyes out. She did not know what happened to either her marriage or her husband. It was the first time ever that Tammy felt frightened by her husband. He was a totally different man, and Tammy was furious. Shonda called her to see how she was doing, but every time she called, Jerry would ignore the call. She thought about going over to her house but thought it would be best if she waited to hear from Tammy. She felt like Tammy was in great danger but did not want to go against her and call the police. She continued to pray for her friend. Tammy almost felt as if her husband was having an affair. He never acted that
way, and most of the time, the one doing all the accusing was the main one stepping out. Tammy knew there was something else going on with her husband because she was being a faithful wife. This was not the kind of marriage she had prayed for, and she knew God had something better in store for her. She got up the next morning and got her bedspread out of the living room, where he slept because he was disgusted with her. She did not miss him being in the bed with her because he was beginning to feel like a stranger. He was not the same nice and caring guy he was back home and in high school when they first met. Then Tammy thought to herself maybe he was, and she was just too blind to see it. She turned down the heater and fixed her some oatmeal and a glass of hot tea. Then she got herself together and ran her some hot bathwater and relaxed her body. She lay in the tub for about an hour, relaxing and thinking to herself about her life. Then she got out and got dressed and sat outside on their balcony. She took her a magazine and enjoyed the nice, cool breeze. It was a very nice and quiet neighborhood. If only her life was as peaceful as the neighborhood, everything would be all right. Tammy was very confused and did not know what to do. She just knew things could not get any worse than they were.
Chapter 4
Afraid to Speak Out
The next day, Jerry apologized again. This time, he promised not to hit her again or put his hands on her at all. He went out and bought more flowers and another card. Tammy was off the next four days. It gave her time to heal. Jerry told her to get ready because they were going out to celebrate his pay raise at work. He took her to Red Lobster. “What did you do today?” asked Jerry. “Nothing much. Just cleaned the house and washed clothes. Trying to keep busy,” replied Tammy. “I miss you when I leave and go to work. One day, we will be able to sit at home and relax. When I turn twenty-one, I will be able to get the money my parents left me. They had it set up where I couldn’t touch it until I get a certain age,” said Jerry. “Oh, okay,” replied Tammy. “Sounds like they made sure you would be well taken care of.” “No, baby, not just me, but the both of us. We are one now, and what’s mine is yours,” said Jerry. “I love you.” “I love you too,” replied Tammy. “One thing for sure, our house is paid for, thanks to the other money they left. We do not have to worry about a mortgage. I got us covered. That’s why I told you that you did not have to work,” said Jerry. Tammy just smiled.
“What’s wrong? Aren’t you happy right now? You don’t have to worry about anything,” asked Jerry. “Oh no, I am very happy. As a matter of fact, happy is an understatement. That’s music to my ears,” replied Tammy. Tammy sort of went with the motion because she did not want to disappoint her husband. When they went to Walgreens and Jerry went to use the restroom, Tammy purchased her a pay-as-you-go cell phone. She figured she needed something just in case of an emergency. Jerry had a tendency to be aggressive and take her things, leaving her at home with no communication to the outside world. He even took her laptop a few times. “Do you need anything out of here?” asked Jerry. “No, I am fine,” replied Tammy. “I didn’t ask how you look, baby,” said Jerry. “Oh, really?” laughed Tammy. He kissed her and got himself a few drinks. “You make me so happy, Tammy, and I know I am the luckiest guy in the world.” They went home and enjoyed their night together. Jerry got them a few snacks and turned on Netflix. They fell asleep watching TV, laughing, and watching movies. Jerry got up and went to work the next day. Tammy figured she would activate her phone. She did not activate it at home because she knew Jerry had cameras installed a day ago and didn’t know what he was up to. Tammy wasn’t sure whether he had them installed in the house. She called and told him that she was going to the grocery store to pick up a few items. He told her to call him when she got there and when she was leaving. Tammy did exactly what he asked of her. She even talked to him the whole way home since she activated her phone in the grocery store. It made Jerry feel good. Tammy’s twentieth birthday was coming up. She had not seen her mother since she left home. When Jerry made it home, Tammy was cooking dinner. “Do you think we can go and see my family for my birthday?” asked Tammy.
“Baby, it’s a spur of the moment, and I can’t just up and leave,” replied Jerry. “It’s my birthday, Jerry, and I haven’t seen them in almost two years. We talk every now and then on the phone, but that is not enough for me. I need to see them,” said Tammy. “You should have mentioned it earlier, but I just can’t do it,” responded Jerry. “How about I go by myself?” replied Tammy. “Woman, are you out your rabbit mind?” yelled Jerry. “I wish you would say you are driving down that highway by yourself. I am your husband, and you will not drive anywhere like that without me. Who do you think I am?” asked Jerry. “What are you talking about? I just miss them so much,” said Tammy. “I am your family. I told you I can’t get off work to take you, and that is final. Do not ask me again,” replied Jerry as he walked off. She really wanted to go visit her family, but Jerry did not want to go. He wanted her all to himself and really did not care about her family. He was furious with her. Tammy sat down in a chair in the kitchen crying to herself. She did not know what to do and decided not to celebrate her birthday because she had nothing to celebrate. She got tired of going out to eat every year and the same last-minute spur-of-themoment gifts. She wanted something that meant something and came from the heart. When a person goes and gets something at the last minute, there is no thought into it. He claimed he loved her, but he barely showed it. Jerry was more controlling than anything. Time ed, and it was time for Tammy to go back to work. Instead of Tammy driving to work, her husband drove her to work. He wanted to make sure that she had to depend on him and wanted to make sure she knew she better not call or talk to anyone else. He picked Shonda up and took them to work and was there way before time to pick them up. The following week, Shonda’s car was broken down, and her husband picked them up from work and dropped them off. Tammy thanked them for the ride but did not see her husband in the window. “Whose car is that, Tammy? Why were you in that car, Tammy? Why didn’t you
call me and tell me you would be in another car, Tammy?” asked Jerry. “That was Shonda’s husband. Her car broke down, and he came and picked us up,” Tammy replied. “You didn’t have common sense to call me, your husband… and let me know what was going on?” Jerry replied. “I’m sitting here waiting on you to pull up in one car, and you pulled up in another one.” Jerry had lost his temper again. Before he knew it, he had grabbed Tammy and pushed her to the floor. “Noooooo, Jerry! Stop! Get off me! You said you would not put your hands on me again. Jerry, what did I do?” cried Tammy. “It’s okay for her to ride home with you, and I cannot ride home when her husband drives. You are a hypocrite!” “What? Are you crazy? You must think I am crazy? I see you talking to these men at work. Now you are bold enough to let one drop you off at home. You did not think I would figure it out, huh? Are you some type of whore now?” Jerry said. Tammy cried harder, and he told her to be quiet. He slapped her and grabbed her by her leg, and Tammy kicked him. She got up and tried to run, but he caught her and threw her to the floor and pulled her through the house. All she could do was yell and scream. She tried to fight back. The louder she got, the more he punched her until she balled up and didn’t say a word. “Jerry, stop it,” cried Tammy. “Leave me alone.” “Shut up. I own you, and do not forget that. You are my property. Do you understand me? You do as I say,” replied Jerry. Tammy shivered in fear, trying to protect her face as her husband abused her. He kicked her in her stomach as if she was nothing. The man that was supposed to love her and cherish her, the man that was supposed to protect her, was the man causing her all harm. She went to work only to come home and get jumped on for nothing by her husband. Jerry left her in the hallway and walked upstairs and got in the shower. He put on some clothes and left her balled up in the floor, sobbing. There was blood on the floor, and he walked right over it, not caring. He went to the liquor store and got
a bottle of Crown Royal and bought him some chicken. He drove around and ate his food and sipped on his drink. When he was done eating, he went home. Tammy was balled up in bed in the guest room covered up, still crying. He looked at her and laughed. “I bet you won’t get in another car with no other male. You are nothing but a whore!” yelled Jerry. Tammy cried a little harder, but Jerry was too drunk to care. To make sure that she would suffer, he took all the covers and put them in the bed with him. He figured she needed to be taught a lesson. When he went upstairs, she went to the closet and got another blanket and locked the door. When he left for work, she got up and ran her some hot water and took a long hot bath. Afterward, she fixed herself some oatmeal. She wrapped herself up in the blanket given to her by her grandma. She began to pray and asked God why her. She hadn’t done anything wrong. All she wanted was to be happy and live her life to the fullest. She was in so much pain that she could barely walk. Jerry made it home a little after 6:00 p.m., and as usual, he wasn’t emptyhanded. He had roses and a takeout for dinner. Once again, he apologized and told her he would never hit her again. He did not want her in a car with another man because he was her man, and it was his job to take care of her. Tammy began to vomit and could barely walk to get to the bathroom. “Baby, are you all right?” asked Jerry. “Leave me alone,” replied Tammy. “You can’t walk by yourself. You need help,” said Jerry. “I am all right,” replied Tammy as she attempted to stand up and fell on the floor. Jerry picked her up and put her in the car. He drove her to the doctor to get checked out because Tammy was in so much pain. “I need a wheelchair, please. Can someone please help my wife?” asked Jerry. The nurses ran to the front with a wheelchair. “We will take it from here,”
replied one of the nurses. “We will let you know when you can come to the back.” “I am right here, baby,” said Jerry. Jerry pranced up and down the hallway of the hospital. He wasn’t sure whether or not his wife was all right. The doctors confirmed that Tammy’s shoulders were bruised and swollen bad. She also had a sprained ankle. The doctors asked what happened, and she didn’t respond. Afraid for her life, she told them she had fallen down some stairs. The doctor looked at the nurse in disbelief. She had an excuse to be off work for the next twenty-one days. The doctor said she needed some time to heal. Jerry ran her bathwater for the next few days. He prepared her breakfast before he went to work. He prepared her lunch as well. When he came in, he bought home some takeout from her favorite restaurant. “Baby, I am so sorry for mistreating you and being jealous for nothing. That is your friend’s husband, and I had no reason to act the way I did. Sometimes we cannot think, and the truth is lying right there in our face. Please forgive me,” said Jerry. “I already forgave you,” responded Tammy. Tammy thought things were getting better. She was starting to feel like her husband was changing. They didn’t argue anymore, and he was very nice to her. He even took her out to dinner and a movie, which was something that they hadn’t done in a while. The last day before Tammy could go back to work, she and Jerry lay in their bed all snuggled up. “Jerry, I really like working and helping elderly people who can’t help themselves.” “Tammy, we don’t have to ruin the night talking about work. I told you how I felt about that.” “Jerry, I am supposed to return to work in the morning. Are you going to take me?” asked Tammy.
“Baby, I could, but you can drive yourself. I have to work tomorrow myself,” Jerry replied. “I love you Jerry.” “I love you too, Tammy,” said Jerry. The next day at work, Shonda was standing in the hallway waiting on Tammy to walk in. “Girl, where have you been?” “I’ve been around. Just home taking care of business,” said Tammy. “Why were you out for three weeks?” asked Shonda. “I haven’t heard from you since we dropped you off that day.” “Oh, that was nothing, girl. I’m fine,” Tammy replied. Shonda knew there was more to the story, but she pretended to believe her anyway. “Do you need a ride home?” asked Shonda. “Oh no, thank you. I drove myself to work,” Tammy said. “Oh, okay,” Shonda replied. “Well, let us get to work. These patients aren’t going to take care of themselves,” said Tammy. The ladies chuckled and went their separate ways. It was tearing Tammy up because she really needed to talk to Shonda about her situation. She was the only friend she had. When Tammy finished with her patients, Shonda asked her to help her turn another patient. “Wait, Shonda,” said Tammy, “I need to tell you something.” “Come on. There are no cameras in her room, and she can’t talk. Therefore, you do not have to worry about it being repeated,” replied Shonda. “Plus, you never know who is around lurking.”
“You’re right. I can’t take any chances,” responded Tammy. They knocked on the door and went into Mrs. Davis’s room and did patient care. “I have to tell you the truth. I don’t have any friends, and you know that. My husband lost his mind when your husband dropped me off at home,” said Tammy. “I was in the car as well, so why would he get mad?” asked Shonda. “My point exactly. I told him we had dropped you off the week before, and that made him angrier. He beat me like I did not mean anything to him. I am still kind of sore and take my pain medicine faithfully,” said Tammy. Shonda hugged Tammy. “I am so sorry for everything. I hate that you are going through so much pain. Did you call the police?” “I can’t do that. He will kill me!” responded Tammy. “It looks like he is on his way to doing that now,” said Shonda. “You deserve better than him. I am always here for you.” “Thank you, and I have a prepaid phone. I will give you my number so you can have it in case of an emergency.” “I got your back always. You will always have a friend in me,” replied Shonda. “Thank you for always being there for me, girl. I promise you it has been hard since I have moved up here without any family,” said Tammy. “Well, Tam, I am your family now. You couldn’t get rid of me if you tried,” laughed Shonda. “Thanks for the laugh, girl. I needed that,” replied Tammy. The day went by swiftly, and Tammy was really thinking about working an extra shift because she did not want to go home. She knew if she picked up another shift, her husband would only accuse her, and things would be worse than they already were. She did everything she had to do so she would be on time. If Jerry suspected anything, it would be trouble, and she had grown tired.
Chapter 5
Shut Out from the World
When Tammy’s shift was over, her husband was standing outside. “Jerry, why are you here? I drove myself. ?” “Tammy, I know I haven’t been the perfect husband, and I am sorry. I have a surprise for you,” Jerry said. When she looked up, she saw a brand-new car with a red bow on it. “Is that for me?” asked Tammy. “Of course, it is, baby,” Jerry replied. Tammy was so overwhelmed that tears of joy went running down her face. “Thank you so much, babe. I’m so happy.” “Anything for you. I told you I am going to take care of you,” said Jerry. “Here are the keys. Let’s go, baby. Drive us on home.” Tammy got the keys and drove off. They laughed and talked all the way home. When they made it home, Tammy opened the door and saw rose petals everywhere. They led to the kitchen table, where dinner had been prepared. Tammy was stunned. “What’s the occasion?” asked Tammy. “All because I love my wife. I want us to have a family. Get a dog… white fence… the whole nine yards. You’re going to have my children one day, Tammy,” Jerry replied.
Tammy had been waiting to hear those words for a very long time. She always wanted a family of her own. They kissed and ate. After dinner, they moved to the shower, where Jerry began kissing her. He moved from her lips to her neck. She began moaning as he caressed her breasts. He licked her nipple and got her hot as fire and wanted to be the one that she always desired. He moved down to her belly button, and the mood got a little more intense. He moved down a little farther, and her pearl tongue he did kiss. He used his tongue to give her a thrill. From her mouth, she began to squeal. He went fast, then slow, just teasing her, making her feel good, because he knew the right way to please her. He licked her down all the way to her toes, picked her up, and laid her in the bed, holding her close. She began kissing him and moved down very slowly. She wanted him to feel as good as he made her felt. She put a hall in her mouth and moved down to his waist. She slid his penis in her mouth and began massaging it with her tongue. She gave him such a thrill, and all he knew was he did not want it to stop. He was moving like a worm and was out of control, grabbing her hair and pulling her close. Spiraling out of control, he just couldn’t hold still. As she moved faster, it was so good he was moaning louder than she was. He hurried and pulled her up because he could not take it anymore. He began kissing her and picked her up. He sat her on his shoulder and licked her clit like it was his last meal. She nutted all over his face, and he kept going because he liked the way it made her feel and he loved the taste in his mouth. He suck it all up as he grabbed her titties. He then laid her down on the bed, grabbed both of her legs, and made them spread wide open. He then inserted his penis into her vagina and went to work as she screamed his name. He went deeper and deeper, and it was hotter than a volcano. He had to stop and go down on her again because if not, he would erupt. He then flipped her over and started going in from the back. It was so good he couldn’t control himself. He pulled her hair because she liked it rough. He stopped because she wanted to get on top. Up and down, around and around. It was by far one of the best nights of their lives. She rode it like a roller coaster. It was so good that his toes began to curl, and across the bed he did swirl. He flipped her over and kissed her. He went at it and told her he loved her. He went in as deep as he could go. The flames on the fire were getting higher, and he didn’t want to let go. The way she made him feel was a once-in-a-lifetime feeling. She gave him a thrill he had never felt before in his life. He loved that,
and he knew his life would be nothing without her. They both climaxed and laid there, holding one another. “Tammy, I love you so much, baby. I am so sorry for everything I have done. You are my world, and, baby, the way you make me feel, I can’t explain it. I just don’t want to be without you,” said Jerry. “I love you so much more. You never have to worry about that. I am committed to you and only you, baby. I promise you that,” replied Tammy. “I know,” said Jerry as he kissed her. Six weeks later, Tammy began to feel nausea. She couldn’t keep anything down. They went to the doctor and found out they were going to be parents. It nearly changed their lives. Well, almost. One day at work, Jerry did a surprise visit. He saw Tammy smiling and talking to another male coworker. He did not like it. When Tammy talked to any males, he became furious. “Tammy, what are you laughing about?” “Hi, baby, this is Terry. Terry, this is my husband, Jerry. I was telling Terry we are expecting our very first child together and how excited we are,” Tammy responded. “Hmmmm, well, can I talk to you now?” asked Jerry in a hostile voice. “Sure thing, babe. Talk to you later, Terry,” Tammy replied. They walked away in opposite directions. “I come up here to surprise you, and I’m the one getting surprised. Only to see you in another man’s face. Is he the father, Tammy? Is he?” “Jerry, how dare you?” “How dare me.” He raised his hand to slap her but realized they were in public. “That’s okay. I’ll see you at home,” said Jerry.
He walked away upset and put the flowers in the trash can outside. Tammy ran into the bathroom crying. When her shift was over, she drove home. She didn’t see Jerry’s car when she drove up in the driveway. As she got out of the car, there he was, pulling up behind her. Tammy began to shiver and walked in the house. “So now the truth comes out, huh.” “Jerry, what are you talking about? What is going on?” Tammy replied. “You’re messing with Terry now? You thought I wouldn’t find out.” “Jerry, you know that’s not true and is unfair. I only work with him and the others you have accused me of,” said Tammy. “So, you want to keep lying to me. You aren’t anything but a whore. Always in some man’s face.” Tammy began to cry. “How, Jerry? All I do is work and come home to you,” Tammy replied. “So, you think I am stupid. I’m going to show you stupid. Jerry grabbed her and threw her to the hard floor. He kicked her as if she was a kickball. “You won’t have his baby, whore, and I don’t want one with you either. You are a hypocrite. You are a trader. You should die. I hate you!” Tammy began to cough up blood. Jerry looked down at her pink scrubs and saw blood. He immediately stopped and picked her up. He put her in the car and drove her to the hospital crying. “Oh lord, what have I done? What have I done to my wife and my child? Tammy, please don’t die. I am sorry. Don’t report me, baby. I am trying to save you and our baby. I don’t know why I get so angry. Please, baby. Don’t die on me. I love you. I need you. Just keep breathing, baby. Don’t stop breathing on me!” Jerry pulled up to the hospital and got her out. “Help! Help… My wife is seriously hurt. Someone help her! Please!”
The doctors immediately took her. Two hours ed, and Jerry went to the window to check on his wife. The doctor finally came out. “Excuse me, Mr. Wade.” “Yes, is my wife okay?” “She will be, but right now she is in ICU.” “What do you mean?” said Jerry. “She suffered from a head concussion, and her ribs are severely damaged. I’m sorry to tell you this, but the baby did not make it,” replied the doctor. “Nooooooooo!” Jerry screamed. “What happened?” “I was hoping you could tell me,” the doctor responded. “You’re the doctor. You tell me,” said Jerry. “Well, Mr. Wade… your wife seems to have been beaten very badly. According to her record here, this is not her first incident. I have no other choice but to report this to the police for further investigation.” “Po-police. What do they have to do with this?” Jerry replied. “Unless you can tell me what happened to your wife and why she is severely beaten and in ICU, I have to report this. At this point, she isn’t talking. She is on oxygen, and she has lost a lot of blood. She will need a blood transfusion.” Jerry began crying. “Can I please see my wife? Please,” asked Jerry. “Not right now. She needs to rest,” replied the doctor. “When can I see her? She needs me?” “It will not be tonight, sir. Mrs. Wade needs to rest. Why don’t you go home and come back?” “I will not leave my wife!” yelled Jerry.
“My patient needs her rest. You can sit out here as long as you please, but you will not be able to go into the back until I say it is okay,” replied the doctor. Jerry paced back and forth down the hallway. He was wondering how he could do this to his wife. How could he be a murderer and take the life of his own unborn child? What had he become? What would his parents think of him if they saw him now? Jerry sat out in the waiting area of the ICU unit until he fell asleep. The next day around noon, Jerry could go in the room. He saw the tubes coming out of his wife’s mouth and the oxygen on her face, and he immediately began to cry. Somehow, she felt his presence and felt terrified. The machines began to alarm, and the nurses rushed in. They immediately put him out until she was stable. They advised him to go home because she needed more rest. They reported what had happened to the doctor. The doctor always suspected him and ed the police. The police went to the Wades’ residence. An officer knocked at the door. “Hi, are you Mr. Wade?” said the officer. “Yes, sir, I am.” “I’m David with the Horn Lake Police Department. I have a few questions following the incident with your wife.” “Oh sure, come on in, Officer,” said Jerry. The officer noticed the blood on the floor. “Why is there blood on the floor?” asked the officer. “Well, ummm… Officer, my wife…” “Yes, sir, I understand. That’s why I am here,” said the officer as he stopped Jerry from stumbling over his words. Right then and there, the police had reason to believe that Jerry was behind the whole incident. He took him down to the station. Jerry told him that they had an argument, and his wife was very upset. She had a bat after him and stumbled and fell down the stairs. It was a hard fall. That was when he picked her up and
drove her to the hospital. The police acted as if he took the bait. He let him go as if the whole thing was over. Jerry left there and went home to clean up everything. He had to scrub the floor, and then he had to wax it all over again. He paced back and forth, wondering what he was going to do because he could not go to jail. He had to get through to his wife some kind of way. Tammy stayed in the hospital for two months. On their way home, Jerry was shaking because he knew the police would soon come by. He had to say something. “Now look, Tammy. I know what I did was wrong. I will never forgive myself for what I did. I regret making you lose our child. The police are going to come over, and you tell them you had a bat after me and fell down some stairs,” said Jerry. Tammy was feeling weak and just nodded her head. “So, you’re not going to say anything,” said Jerry. “I am trying to talk to you.” “I hear you, Jerry. How do you think I am feeling right now? I am tired of being falsely accused and beat’n for something I didn’t even do. I commit to you, but that’s not good enough for you. The only difference this time is that you made me miscarry. I lost my baby, Jerry, and it’s your entire fault. You didn’t care that I was carrying your child. All you wanted to do was beat me and make sure I didn’t talk to anyone you didn’t approve of,” replied Tammy. “Look, Tammy I apologized…” “Please, if I had a dollar every time you said that, I would be a wealthy woman,” replied Tammy. “So now you want to get smart with me. You better be glad…” “What, Jerry? You can’t do any more harm to me than you have already done. The worst you can do is kill me. Only then will all this pain go away. I regret the day I let you in my life,” replied Tammy. “I am going to act like I didn’t hear anything you just said because that was very disrespectful,” said Jerry.
“Me disrespectful. I am twenty-one years old and have taken more beatings from you than I have had during my childhood. The rest of the ride home was silent. Jerry had tears rolling down his face, and Tammy just turned and looked out the window. She really could not stand to be around her husband. He was a totally different man, and she did not have anywhere to go. She did not know what to do. She knew what she wanted to do but did not have the strength to do it on her own. Jerry drove up into the driveway and helped Tammy in the house. He made sure she was comfortable and relaxed. When he was done helping her, he went to sit outside thinking to himself. What had he done this time? Was he really the way Tammy was describing him to be? Should he change his ways? Was she telling the truth about the other men? He did not have an answer to either thought in his head. He knew he did not want his wife talking to any males because he thought they all wanted his wife. He was not about to let anyone come between them. What he did know was that he was causing his wife to fall out of love with him all on his own. The next day, the police came by their house. Tammy was lying on the couch, watching television. “Good morning, Mrs. Wade, how are you doing this morning?” asked the officer. “Good morning, I’m doing okay, just in a lot of pain,” replied Tammy. “I see,” said the officer. “I can’t imagine what you are going through right now. My condolences to you on the loss of your child. Do you think you can tell me what happened to you?” “Of course, my husband and I got into an argument, and I was very upset. I grabbed the baseball bat, chasing him, and I fell down the stairs, and I can’t anything else except for waking up in the hospital and getting the terrible news about my baby,” replied Tammy. “Are you sure that’s what happened?” asked the officer. “Yes, I can assure you that’s what happened,” replied Tammy. “Are you sure that’s all you ?” asked the officer.
“Yes, I am sure. So, what do you think happened?” asked Tammy. “We can only take your word, ma’am. We hope you have a speedy recovery. If you need anything, here is my hard card. Hope you have good day,” replied the officer. “The same to you, sir,” replied Tammy. The officer left, and she lay back down on the couch for a while. A few minutes later, Jerry walked in the house. He had driven to the store.
Chapter 6
Prisoner in Own Home
“I seen the officer leaving when I was pulling up,” said Jerry. “Good,” replied Tammy. “So, you are being funny?” asked Jerry. “I was only responding to what you said. It was good that you seen them so you wouldn’t have asked me did they come by while you were out,” replied Tammy. “So, what’s that in your hand?” asked Jerry. “He gave me a card in case I needed something. He told me to call him at the station,” replied Tammy. “You will not need him or that card. Now give it to me!” yelled Jerry. “You can have this card,” replied Tammy. “I never was going to use it in the first place.” Jerry got the card and tore it up and placed it in the trash. “Now, do you want something to eat?” ask Jerry. “I bought you something from Texas Roadhouse.” “I will rather not,” replied Tammy. “Look. You did not eat at all when we got home yesterday, and I am quite sure that you have not eaten anything today. You need to eat, or you will go back in the hospital,” said Jerry.
“Why not? What do you care anyway? Besides, the whole thing is your fault,” replied Tammy. “I have apologized, and I know I can’t bring our baby back, but you are not about to hold this over my head!” yelled Jerry. “You mad enough to punch me now. Go ahead, go right ahead, and take your best shot. Send me to my baby,” replied Tammy. Jerry shook his head and walked off. Tammy yelled, “Oh, he walks off for the first time! Oh my, it is a new record!” She lay back down on the couch and covered up. She was in a very bad place and really wanted her baby back. She couldn’t believe that the one person she thought was meant for her would be the one to destroy her. She put her head in the pillow and cried herself to sleep. Jerry walked back through the living room to check on her. He saw that she was buried in the pillow and walked back outside in the backyard, sitting on the patio. He began crying because he knew that he had really caused Tammy pain. Something that he could not replace or bring back to her. He did not know what to do or how to make it up to her. He never meant to hurt her the way he did. The next morning, Jerry realized Tammy never came to bed. He went to look for her, and she was still on the couch. She was fast asleep. He went in the kitchen and cooked her some breakfast and woke her up. “Good morning, Tammy,” said Jerry. “I made you breakfast.” “I am not hungry, Jerry,” replied Tammy. “I want to go where my baby is. Just let me be.” He instantly grabbed her and hugged her. “Tammy, I cannot replace our baby. I am hurting just like you, but you must eat. If not, you will get weak. Do you think the baby would want you to be like this?” “How do I know? I don’t even know what sex the baby would have been. Would he or she look more like you or like me? I never had the privilege of meeting my baby, and I just want to leave and go with my child. Now the doctor says I can’t have any more children, and it is your entire fault, Jerry,” replied Tammy.
“I’m sorry,” said Jerry. “Get off me. I am a whore. ?” replied Tammy. “Tammy, I know I said some things that I just can’t take back. Will you please forgive me?” asked Jerry. “I forgive you, but I will never forget what you did to me,” replied Tammy. “Now please, leave me alone.” Jerry walked away and took the food back in the kitchen. He then walked upstairs and showered and put on some clothes. “I will be back,” said Jerry. “I am going for a ride. Do you need anything while I am out?” “Yes, my baby,” replied Tammy. “My chance to have another baby. How about that, Jerry?” Jerry looked at his wife and walked out the door. He knew their marriage would never be the same but was going to try to make it better. He didn’t know what to do but knew something had to be done. He figured his wife could make it without him; after all, she did not want to be around him. Jerry decided to go back to work Monday morning. He said that bills had to be paid, and he had missed a lot of days already. His money was trying to decrease, but he wasn’t going under a certain amount. Tammy was happy he was leaving for work. He had been at home with her too long, being in her way. She decided to give Shonda a call because she knew she was the only friend she had up there. She was more like a sister to her because she was always there when she needed her or just there for her, period. “Hi, Tam,” said Shonda. “How are you? I have been worried about you, sis.” “Hi, girl. I know. That’s why I called you,” replied Tammy. “I know something is wrong because you have not been to work, and word around the place is that you quit,” said Shonda.
“That is why I called. Shonda, something has to change around here. I have been beaten so bad that I lost my baby,” said Tammy. “Wait a minute! What in the hell do you mean you lost your baby? Is that fool crazy or something?” yelled Shonda. “I do not know what has gotten into him because he was not like that at first. He used to be the Prince Charming and did everything right,” said Tammy. “A prince lie! He must be ready to meet his maker? Did you call the police on his narrow behind! This is too much. I am coming over right now and getting you out of there!” replied Shonda. “No, that is not necessary, sis. I have everything under control. I promise you I do. It has cooled down. If you come over, he will only get upset. Please, for me. I hate for you to come, and I do not answer the door. He put cameras around the house and monitoring me like I am on house arrest,” said Tammy. “You got to be kidding me,” replied Shonda. “No, I am not. I do not use the phone on our regular line for anything. He is crazy. I just do not have time,” said Tammy. “You need to get out while you have time. I know you love him, but you can still make a run for it,” replied Shonda. “You are exactly right. I have a plan in mind. I am going to do whatever it takes to get back home to my family. That’s all that matters to me. Once I get him to go to Ruleville, Mississippi, I will be all right. That’s where my mom and father and siblings are,” said Tammy. “You keep me posted and let me know if you need anything. I want to hear from you every day if you can. I know I cannot call you, but please call or text me every day to let me know that you are doing all right,” replied Shonda. “I sure will, girl. Thank you for everything. Thank you for being a true friend to me. I love you, girl,” said Tammy. “You are more than welcome. Thank you. I love you more, Tam,” Shonda replied.
“We will talk soon. Take care of yourself,” said Tammy. “I sure will. You do the same. Be careful, Tam. I mean it,” replied Shonda. “I promise I will,” Tammy said as she hung up the phone. She ed the Bible her grandmother had given her. She forced herself up and went and found it. When she opened the Bible, it instantly landed on 2 Corinthians 4:8. For some reason, her grandmother had it highlighted. It read, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed, we are perplexed, but not in despair.” She read 2 Corinthians 4:9: “Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.” Then she proceeded to 2 Corinthians 4:10: “Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.” Tammy wondered what that meant. She knew she was troubled. She was in a lot of pain. For the next few days, she read those same three verses. Her heart ached badly. She mourned the loss of her baby. Not knowing whether it was a boy or girl. Not being able to ever hold her baby. Her world had turned upside down within a twinkling of an eye. The thought of her not being able to conceive another child almost destroyed her. Tammy cried her eyes out yet again until she fell asleep. Jerry walked in and saw the Bible on the center table. He then looked at Tammy, who was fast asleep. “What is she doing reading the Bible? I have never seen her pick up a Bible,” said Jerry. “That’s the problem,” replied Tammy as she turned over. “I left Him out and treated you like my god,” “What did you just say to me?” responded Jerry. “You heard me,” replied Tammy. He walked over to her and said, “I am your god. I let you live, didn’t I? Don’t you ever forget that.”
“That’s a lie. God makes everything possible,” replied Tammy. “Look. I don’t ever want to hear that again. Did he save my parents? Did he save our baby?” asked Jerry. “You murdered your own child. You can’t blame God,” replied Tammy. Jerry slapped her. “Don’t you ever disrespect me again! Do you understand me? I will break you down if you ever think about it again. “Now this is my house and I make the rules. You just do as I say, and everything will be all right. I work, and I make the money. You cook, clean, iron my clothes, and make sure everything is on point. Is that understood?” demanded Jerry. Tammy didn’t say a word. “I know you hear me talking to you. Now I said, is that understood?” yelled Jerry. Tammy began to walk away because she was tired of the confrontation. She knew Jerry was not going to stop, and if he hit her hard enough this time, she just might die. Jerry grabbed her and pushed her to the wall. “You’re asking for it, huh?” asked Jerry. “Do as you please,” replied Tammy. She was tired of being mistreated and knew there was nothing she could say or do to stop him. She did not have any family around her, and she was all alone. She felt as if she couldn’t leave home without permission. When she went out, it was with her husband, and she was very frightened. She felt as if she was in prison. If a man spoke to her, she immediately put her head down. She walked closer to Jerry to reassure him that she wouldn’t reply. Tammy did not want to be abused anymore. There were times when she just sat at home and cleaned for weeks at a time. She did not know what a breath of fresh air was like. She didn’t know what it was like to feel the sun shine upon her face. Tammy was almost afraid to live her own life. She had to make sure that everything was perfect for Jerry. She washed and cleaned for him. She ironed his clothes and cleaned his shoes. She was hurt because she was forced to quit her job right after he beat her and made her lose her baby. Tammy felt more like a housemaid than a wife. If Jerry told her his food was too
cold, she reheated it in the microwave or on the stove. Tammy had to cut his food up for him. A lot of times, her food would get cold and she had to reheat her own food. Jerry had turned into a control freak. He was some kind of monster that Tammy did not recognize. She had to make sure his cover was pulled back, pillow was fluffy, and shower water was ready. She picked up his clothes as he took them off. She massaged his shoulders, back, and feet when he told her. In return, she got to live and enjoy his company. One evening, Tammy cooked exactly what Jerry told her. When she was done, he did not want it. He demanded that she fix him something else to eat. Tammy feared for her life. She immediately prepared another meal. She fixed his plate the way he liked it and cleaned up the kitchen, and everything was in order. When she woke up the next morning, Jerry had already left for work. Tammy grabbed her Bible once again, and this time, when she opened it, she saw something that caught her eye. She read Isaiah 54:17: “No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn.” Tammy turned the Bible again, and she found Romans 8:37: “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Then she turned to 1 Corinthians 10:13: “He will not put no more on you than you can bear.” The she went to Matthew 6:24: “No man can serve two masters, either he will love one and hate the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other, Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Tammy then picked up the phone. She was curious about the verses. She wondered what they meant and called her grandma. They talked for over an hour and a half. Then she called her mom. They talked for another hour or so. Her mother invited her and Jerry to come home to their Family and Friends Day Program that Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. She was so excited. She asked Jerry about it. He agreed. Tammy called her mom to assure her that she was coming home. She hadn’t seen her mom in three years.
Shut out from the universe, Tammy was all alone. The feeling of going home gave her hope. Jerry thought that if he took her home for a day or two, she would forgive him and forget what had happened. He knew she would not forget, but at least she would feel better. The next day at work, Jerry had to let go of one of his best employees because of a drug test. He was frustrated and realized he could not take Tammy home for the weekend. He drove home thinking what he would do now. Would she ever forgive him? Then he thought to himself it didn’t matter because he was paying the bills and his job was more important. When he walked in the door, Tammy was sitting on the couch, watching television. “Hey, Tammy. I am afraid I have some bad news,” said Jerry. “What do you mean bad news?” asked Tammy. “What happened?” “I had to let go of one of my best employees today because he failed his drug test. I will have to stand in for him this weekend. That means we cannot make it home for Sunday service,” replied Jerry. “Well, can you get someone else to do it? We talked about it. I told Mama that we were coming home,” said Tammy. “Home!” replied Jerry. “This is our home. We came here to build us a home together. Down south is just visiting. It is not to be called home.” “I haven’t seen my family in three years, and if I do not come home, they will invite themselves up here and find us,” said Tammy. “I am surprised they haven’t already.” “Look, Tammy. I will see what I can do. I have a business to run. You know that. I will make arrangements, and I do not want to hear anything else about this stupid trip. We are coming right back home after church on Sunday,” replied Jerry. “Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, baby,” said Tammy. She was so happy.
“Don’t get too happy because dinner is not going to fix itself,” replied Jerry. He really did not want to go back home. He only made the decision to go because he didn’t want her family up in their house.
Chapter 7
Hope/Reunited with Family
“Tammy, are you ready to go?” “Yes, Jerry. I have everything I need,” said Tammy. “Are you sure, because I thought women take plenty of suitcases, so they can have enough of everything they need?” “I only need one, Jerry. I do not need all of those clothes and shoes. I barely wear them now. I am not trying to impress anyone. I’m fine. It’s big enough,” replied Tammy. “Okay, nothing changes. I will guide you. Don’t get down here and make me look bad,” said Jerry. “Okay, Jerry,” said Tammy. “I understand.” “Look, Tammy. I’m not trying to tell you what to do. I just want a healthy marriage with no trouble at all. You don’t have to do all the things you do for me at home while we are at your parents’ house. Enjoy your family, enjoy yourself, and have a great time.” “Okay, Jerry,” said Tammy. “Whatever you say.” In her mind, all she wanted was to make it to Ruleville, Mississippi to see her mom, dad, grandfather, and grandmother. The ride took forever, but it was worth it. Jerry made a few stops, and Tammy did not understand why he made so many stops because the ride was only two hours, if that long. Jerry got something to drink at every stop, which made him urinate frequently than usual. Tammy got excited once she saw they were approaching Parchman, Mississippi,
because she knew home wasn’t far away. As they pulled in the driveway, Tammy felt a burden lift off her shoulders. The door opened, and there stood her mom, grandmother, and four brothers. Tammy had a glow on her face that hadn’t been there in years. As she got out of the car, her mom ran to her. Tammy’s mother was crying. “Baby, Mama is so glad to see you.” She held Tammy tight in her arms. “I’m glad to see you too, Mama,” cried Tammy. Everyone hugged and cried for a minute or two. They hadn’t seen one another in three years. It felt good to be reunited with family and to feel so much love. Tammy was happy to finally be home. “Hey, Jerry, don’t keep my sister away from us that long again man,” said Thomas. “I know, right?” responded Cord. “If we don’t hear from you every week, we are coming up there ourselves. Family should not go years without seeing one another. You are our baby sister, and we don’t want anything happening to you, Tammy.” “I will not let any harm come against her. I took a vow to honor and love and cherish her. I will protect her from anyone who tries to harm her. She is my whole world. She is all I have,” replied Jerry. “We will see,” said Cord. “What kind of man keeps his wife away from her family that long anyway? Something is wrong with that. You want her all to yourself or some, bro? I know you married her, but she still has family.” “Hey, man, it’s nothing like that, but I confess one thing. It is hard to share her,” replied Jerry. “I mean, look at how beautiful she is. I love this woman with all my heart.” “You better, or you will have to answer to me,” said Jamie. Jerry laughed. “Something is definitely wrong with you both.” “You are going to find out if you think I will sit back and let you keep my sister away from us that long again,” said Cord. “I will take a bullet for her, and I will
end up in jail for her. Don’t get it twisted. She is blood, bro.” “I get it, Cord,” replied Jerry. “Chill out, for real though. Everything is all good.” “All right now, you guys. Tammy, how have you been doing, baby? Mama sure does miss you. I don’t know how we let this much time go by without seeing one another, but it will not happen again.” “Me either, Mama. I’m just glad to be home with my family,” said Tammy. “I promise not to let it happen again.” “I’m your family too, baby,” chuckled Jerry, but he knew what Tammy meant. “Come on, babe. You know what I mean. I haven’t seen my mom, grandmother, and siblings in three years. I just miss them. You take such good care of me until I don’t have room for anything else.” “I try my best, anything for my Tammy,” replied Jerry. “You’re my world.” He then hugged her and whispered in her ear, “Now don’t think I’m crazy,” and kissed her on the cheek. Her mother and grandmother immediately suspected things were not as good as Tammy was trying to make them believe. “Come on, everyone,” said Tammy’s mother. “We can all have a seat in the den.” Jerry held Tammy’s hand extremely tight, ensuring that she had to sit right next to him. Her heart was full of trouble, and deep down, she was trembling with fear. She wondered to herself, Why must I be afraid of him now? I have my siblings, mom, and grandmother here. As she was thinking to herself, a strong masculine voice said, “Is that my cupcake in there?” Tammy immediately jumped up and ran in the arms of her grandfather. “Oh, Grandpa… I have missed you so, so, so much.” “I miss you too, cupcake,” replied her grandpa. “Why haven’t you come and visited me? Now you know a phone call just don’t work for me. I have to lay
eyes on you myself. Especially a two- or three-minute phone call.” “Grandpa, I’m so sorry. Please forgive me. It won’t happen again,” replied Tammy. “I know when my cupcake is not happy. I felt it in a few of those calls, and now to lay eyes on you, it has been confirmed. What’s going on, cupcake?” asked her grandpa. “Oh, it’s nothing, Grandpa. I’m just excited to be here,” replied Tammy. “Are you sure? You can talk to me about anything.” “I know, Grandpa,” said Tammy. “Young man, how have you been treating my cupcake? I know when something is bothering her.” “You know me, just trying to make sure she is happy,” chuckled Jerry. “I don’t know you like that, but you better make sure she is happy. Something is not right in the neighborhood. I know my cupcake, son! First of all, I did not like how you forced her to move away not long after you married her. Then, you kept her away all of these years.” “Yes, sir,” replied Jerry. “I have done my best to be a great husband.” “Everything is fine, Grandpa. Jerry takes real good care of me. I don’t have to worry about anything,” said Tammy. “Baby, why don’t you ride with your grandmother and me?” said Tammy’s mother. “We’re going over to your aunt s’s house.” “Yes, ma’am. I would love to,” replied Tammy. “Yes, and, Jerry, you can stay here with the men,” said her grandpa. “Sounds good to me,” replied Jerry. “Baby, do you need anything? Some cash or credit card?” “I’m fine, baby. Thank you,” said Tammy. “I’m going to go and freshen up,
Mama. I really want to see how my old room looks.” “It still looks the same way it did when you left home,” replied her mom. “Okay, I can’t wait to see it.” Tammy got up and walked down the hallway. Jerry followed her into the room and closed the door behind him. “Is everything okay?” asked Tammy. “What have you been telling these people? They all looking at me and talking to me like I am crazy,” said Jerry. “I haven’t said anything,” replied Tammy. “Well, you better not because I hate to hurt them.” There was a knock at the door. “Are you ready to go, sweetheart?” asked Tammy’s mother. “Yes, ma’am. I’m on my way out.” “Don’t make me embarrass you down here in this little town,” said Jerry. Tammy nodded. “Now give me a kiss and don’t be gone long,” said Jerry. “I can’t control my mama, Jerry. That’s wrong,” replied Tammy. “You heard what I said. You better make up an excuse to get back to me. I do not trust any of these people,” replied Jerry. “Why do you think we never came back?” Tammy instantly felt like she had been cut deep. What was wrong with this man she had fallen in love with? He acted as if he was going crazy and had lost his mind. He really needed therapy of some sort. How could he expect her to enjoy herself when he was still being so controlling? “Now, Jerry, this is my mom you are talking about and my grandmother. What
did they do to you that caused you not to trust them?” asked Tammy. “I don’t have to have a reason. Just know that I mean every word I have said,” replied Jerry. He looked at her and walked off. Tammy came out behind him fighting tears. As she walked down the hallway ing through the den, her brothers noticed her wiping her eyes. “Hey, sis, are you all right?” asked Cord. “We see you wiping your eyes. Have you been crying?” “I’m all right, Cord. Thanks for asking,” replied Tammy. “Hey, bro, what did you do to my sis?” asked Cord. “She isn’t just wiping her eye for nothing.” “I didn’t do anything to her,” replied Jerry. “She is just happy to be home.” “Why did you have to follow her in the back to freshen up? She was all right before you got up and went behind her,” said Cord. “Look. I did nothing,” replied Jerry. “You better be telling the truth because if we find out you are lying, you will not make it back home in one piece, and you can bet on that,” said Jamie. “All right, fellas,” said her grandpa. “Don’t worry my wife, your other grandmother, and your mother. You all are drawing a crowd.” “I told you all he didn’t do anything. Now cool down,” replied Tammy. “My sister just saved you, playa. You better thank her,” said Jamie. “I know right, bro?” replied Cord. Jerry sat down on the couch, and Cord and Jamie stared at him, making him feel uncomfortable. He wanted to get up and walk outside, but he just took out his phone and ignored them. Tammy walked out the door behind her mom and grandmother. She had been
rescued but was too blind to see it. Even though she was home with her family, she was still in prison. She wanted to escape, and she wanted a way out. She just didn’t know how. She had been bound for a long time, and Jerry really had a hold on her. They got in the car and drove off. As she buckled up, her phone went off. It was Jerry sending a text message.
Hubby. Your family is going to make me destroy them. I promise. Then I will destroy you for letting them disrespect me. (Tammy shook her head, and her mother saw her. Her phone went off again.) Hubby. So, you are ignoring me, Tammy? Don’t you know what I will do to you? Don’t make me remind you! Tammy, immediately texting him back. Jerry, I do not know what the problem is. People are not crazy. They pick up on things. You are not making this easy for me. I come to visit my family, and you are threatening me already, and we just made it down here. Hubby. Don’t forget what I said. That’s strike 1. Don’t strike out, and I’m done with this conversation. Tammy. Okay, Jerry. Whatever you say. Hubby. Don’t let me miss you while you’re gone. Tammy. I told you I can’t control my family. I am not driving, and you know that. What is wrong with you? Hubby. Just do as I say.
Tammy’s eyes began to fill up with water. Her mother was watching her wipe her eyes in the rearview mirror. She tapped her mom on the hand and pointed to the back at Tammy. She did not see her mom because she was too busy looking down in her phone. Her grandmother just shook her head. They knew something was off but just couldn’t put their hands on it.
Her mom knew that something was really bothering her daughter. As a wife and especially as a mother, she knew that something was very off. All this time, wondering whether everything was all right had been confirmed in a matter of minutes. She and Jerry talked a good game, but none of it added up. He seemed like the type that wanted to be placed high on a pedal, but in reality, he was definitely a coward. Tammy had done a great job of trying to hide it, but she was cracking very slowly. Her mother did not want to come right out and say it, but all the signs were there. Tammy was a victim of an abusive relationship. Her mom didn’t know whether it was physical, mental, emotional, or all three. “Tammy, we are glad that you’re home,” said her mom. “I don’t care if it is just for a day or two. I am so happy to see you.” “I am happy to see you all as well, Mom. I have really missed you all. There’s no place like home. I feel safe and secure when I am home with you all,” replied Tammy. “Your father will be so happy to see you when he gets off work,” said her mom. “I can’t wait to see him either,” replied Tammy. “Baby, we sure have missed you. Your grandpa talks about you all the time. We all think three years has been way too long for you to be gone and not come home. I mean, you didn’t come for one single holiday,” said her grandmother. “I’m sorry, you all. Jerry wanted it to be just me and him for a while. You know how it is when you marry someone and branch off to start your own family. Sometimes things change. From this day forward, I promise not to stay away for so long,” said Tammy. “Did he ever consider you had a family back home that you wanted to see? You had me, your father, siblings, your grandparents, and other relatives,” replied her mom. “I am here now, Mom. I am so sorry. I have regretted not coming home and calling you all like I should. I was wrong. Please forgive me,” said Tammy. “All is forgiven. Mama just wants to make sure her baby is okay,” replied her mom.
They drove around and visited family that Tammy had not seen in a very long time. Tammy was so happy to see all her aunts and uncles and cousins. They stayed gone a little over two hours and a half. When they made it home, her brothers and grandfather had barbecued. They prepared side items as well, and everything was ready to be eaten. As they washed their hands, Tammy heard another masculine voice. “I heard my baby girl was in the house. Where is she?” said her father. Tammy came running through the house like a rushing wind. “Hi, Dad. Oh, I have missed you so much.” Tammy hugged her father and cried in his arms. He was so happy to hold his baby girl. It had been three long years. “How are you doing, baby girl?” asked her father. “You have been gone away for far too long. Where is Jerry, and why didn’t he bring you home to see your family?” “Much better, now that I see you, Dad,” said Tammy. “He is around here somewhere.” Jerry was staring at her like she was out of her mind. “It has been too long, Daddy,” said Tammy. “I’m glad to see you.” They fixed their food, and everyone sat around the picnic tables eating and talking. Tammy felt like a little girl again. She was around people who truly cared about her. She did not think about Jerry and what he had said. She was too busy enjoying herself. Being in the presence of her father suddenly made her feel safe. She lay down with her father for a while, watching television, until she got sleepy. “Good night, Mom and Dad. I love you all,” said Tammy. “Today has been real fun. It feels good to be back at home.” “Yes, it has, and getting off work to see you had really made my day. We love you more, baby girl,” said her father. “That’s right,” said her mom. “My baby is home.” “Yes, I am. See you all in the morning.” Tammy walked down the hall into her
old bedroom. “So, were have you been for two hours and a half?” asked Jerry. “I told you, I was going with my mom and grandmother. I can’t control them. I couldn’t make them do anything. We visited my aunts and uncles. I got a chance to see some of my relatives that I haven’t seen in three years, Jerry. That was it. I’m here for two days and with you for a lifetime. What’s the big deal? They don’t see me like you do.” “It didn’t take that long. Now where did they take you?” asked Jerry. “What are you implying?” asked Tammy. “You tell me to enjoy myself, and now you are accusing me. Do you want to pack up and leave now? I can’t handle the pressure you’re putting on me,” replied Tammy. Jerry grabbed Tammy. “Look. Don’t play with me.” “Jerry, stop it,” said Tammy. “This is my family you are talking about. Why don’t you want me talking to my family?” “I don’t have a problem with you talking to your family. You were gone too long. It is all good though because when we get home, you will pay. We won’t be back for years again. You better enjoy this weekend,” said Jerry. “I knew I should have never agreed to come in the first place.” “What do you mean?” asked Tammy. “Exactly what I said,” replied Jerry. “I did not stutter. You will not see them until I say so. You better be glad I got a little respect for your father, or I would show you something right here right now for disrespecting me.” “This is uncalled-for, Jerry, and you know it. There’s not that much jealousy in this world. You can’t control me. I have a life too,” said Tammy. “We shall see. Now don’t say another word to me,” replied Jerry. Jerry got in the bed and turned his back. Tammy sat on the side of the bed, crying to herself. She was praying and asking God to deliver her from her abusive husband. She didn’t sleep well that night. Little did she know her
grandfather had been standing outside the door and heard their whole conversation. There was no way he was letting his granddaughter go back to Horn Lake with that monster. He went to his car and got his kit. He installed a GPS on Jerry’s car. If Jerry left, he could keep up with his location, especially if Tammy went with him and she could not be reached.
Chapter 8
Good Times
The smell of bacon woke Jerry up the next morning. Tammy’s mom and grandmother were cooking an old-fashioned Southern breakfast. Bacon, sausage, ham, eggs, hash browns, grits, toast, cheese toast, rice, oatmeal, grilled cheese, pancakes, Simon crochet, homemade buttermilk biscuits, cinnamon toast, coffee, orange juice, apple juice, fruits, and ice water with cinnamon rolls. “I haven’t seen this much food at a buffet,” said Tammy. “You all have really outdone yourselves.” “That’s a lot of food. The kind that gets you full and puts you to sleep,” said Jerry. “Well, go right ahead, and eat up,” said her grandfather. Jerry chuckled. Everyone came over for breakfast. They enjoyed themselves and had a nice family gathering. After breakfast, everyone went and got dressed. There was a knock on Tammy’s bedroom door as she and Jerry were getting dressed. “Yes,” responded Tammy. “It’s me, baby, Mom.” “Oh, hi, Mom. We will be out in just a minute,” replied Tammy. “Okay, baby. I wanted to see did you all want to go over your aunt Sally and uncle Johnny’s house for a little. They just got back in town,” said her mom. “Okay, give us a few minutes,” responded Tammy.
“Sure thing,” said her mom. Jerry looked at Tammy as if she had done something wrong. “What makes you think I want to go anywhere with your family?” said Jerry. “What is it now, Jerry? It is always something with you. If you do not want to go, stay. I don’t have but today and a half of tomorrow before we go home. I am going to enjoy myself. If you are going to beat me, do so. I might as well enjoy my family while I can. Do what you want when we get back home. It doesn’t matter to me anymore,” replied Tammy. Tammy walked out of the room as fast as she could while Jerry was putting on his shirt. “Tammy!” yelled Jerry as she walked out of the room. “Yes,” said Tammy as she stood in the doorway. “Come in here right now so we can talk. I am not done with you,” replied Jerry. “That’s funny because I am done with this conversation,” replied Tammy as she walked off. “I’m so sick of this crap. I can’t wait to get her back home. She will never come back down here. Think it is a game. They’re not welcome at my house either. They think they’re better than everyone,” said Jerry, talking to himself. He did not know Cord was standing by the door. “You have some issues, bro,” said Cord. “Mind your business because I have not said anything to you,” replied Jerry. “Oh, but you are in here talking to yourself about my sister. I will beat the black off you, my guy. I promise you she will bury you before you lay a hand on her. You got the right one. That’s on my mama,” said Cord as he walked off. “These people really have me messed up. She will pay for all of this,” said Jerry. There was always someone listening, and he was never aware of it. This time, it
was her grandfather again. He just shook his head and walked in the bathroom. Jerry never noticed him there. He heard the door close and finished getting himself together and walked to the living room, where everyone sat around laughing and talking. “Hi, young man, how are you doing this morning?” asked Tammy’s grandmother. “I am doing well. How about you?” asked Jerry. “I am very blessed. I am so happy you all decided to come down. We haven’t seen you all since you moved away. I how excited and happy you were,” said her grandmother. “Yes, ma’am. When I married Tammy, it was the happiest day of my life. All of the money in the world could never take the place of my love for her,” replied Jerry. “All right, young man, that’s my granddaughter you’re talking about,” said her grandfather. “With all due respect, sir, that’s my wife, and I love her to death. She is my world,” said Jerry. “I will do anything for her. I am just that in love with her and crazy about her. “If you are that in love with her, why did you keep her away from her family? Why didn’t you all come and visit or send invitations to your house for holidays?” asked her grandfather. “Granddad, I…” “No, Tammy, I am talking to the man,” said her grandfather as he interrupted her. “Well, sir, we just decided to wait a while and then come home. Every time we were going to come, it was something with my job. I am truly sorry. I will make sure she comes home at least three times or more a year,” replied Jerry. “We will see,” said her grandfather as he got up and walked in the kitchen.
“What is up with your family?” asked Jerry. “I feel like getting on the highway today and going back home. Feeling unwelcome is not a good feeling at all.” “I will talk to them,” said Tammy. “Yeah, you do that. Look. Enjoy your family. I will go and spend the day with my adopted parents. I know they will be glad to see me. I also have to check on my grandmother while I am down here,” replied Jerry. “Okay, I will. Tell them I said hello and enjoy yourself,” said Tammy. “Yeah,” replied Jerry as he got up and walked out of the house. Tammy got up and watched as he drove off. She felt a burden lift off her, and deep down, she hoped he would never come back. In spite of everything going on, she never told her family the truth. She wanted them to think her life was perfect but did not know they already knew the truth. They all went over to visit other family . Around 1:00 p.m., they came back to Tammy’s parents’ house for a fish fry and for a night of family games, laughter, and fun. Tammy had more fun with family than she had had in the last three years of marriage. No one knew of the abuse she had suffered, along with the loss of her baby. Tammy had found happiness all over again. She began to feel loved and cared for again, and she could finally see sunshine instead of rain. Jerry finally came back a little after 9:00 p.m. He told Tammy he was tired and wanted to lie down after he got his bath. She asked him how everything was and how everyone was doing. He told her as well as expected and walked off. He went into the closet and got his bag and went straight to the bathroom. Tammy walked back in front to continue to enjoy her family. She wasn’t about to let him ruin her day. “Hey, sis, how are things back home?” asked Cord. “I cannot complain. Life is good,” replied Tammy. “Look. I heard Jerry talking to himself. I did not tell anyone, but homeboy is really screwed up in the head,” said Cord.
“What did he say?” asked Tammy. “A lot of messed-up things about making you pay, and your family not being welcome at his house. Sis, I almost straight punched him in his face,” replied Cord. “Don’t worry about it, bro,” said Tammy. “He will be all right. He has an attitude problem. Once he calms down, he will be just fine.” “All right, sis. I am watching him. Don’t think for one second that I am afraid to put him in his place because we are blood, and that dude doesn’t mean anything to me. I am serious as a heart attack right now. He better stay in his place. I always knew it was something off about him,” replied Cord. “It’s all right, Cord. Let’s get back inside. You have nothing to worry about,” said Tammy. “I can handle myself.” “Okay, but you know one thing, I got your back, no matter what,” replied Cord. They walked back inside where everyone was playing cards and dominoes and having a great time. That was the kind of family fun Tammy had missed. Life with Jerry had been a living hell and something she never wanted to go back to. When the party started to die down, Tammy started to feel like she was all alone again. It was 11:30 p.m., and everyone decided to call it a night. Tammy helped get the house cleaned and made sure everything was in place. Her mom was very happy to have her back home. When she was done helping everyone get everything together, she went to take a bath and get ready for bed. Tammy lay in her bed thinking that tomorrow would be her last day with her parents for a while. Deep down on the inside, she did not want to go back to Horn Lake, but she knew Jerry was not going to let her go. Tears began to fall from her eyes. Jerry did not notice because he was fast asleep. The next day was Sunday. Tammy’s mother prepared a simple breakfast. They all ate and got dressed for church. They went to New Pilgrim Rest Pastor by Rev. Rodney Richard. He preached about “the power of a praying family.” It really hit home with Tammy. Pastor Richard was happy to see Tammy. It had been three years. He talked to her and her husband and immediately got a bad vibe from them. He told her father and grandfather that something was off about their
marriage. Her grandfather agreed and told them about the conversation he had heard. They all went in Pastor Richard’s office and prayed. After service, Tammy’s mom and grandmother had prepared dinner at their house. Everyone came over. Kevin was Tammy’s childhood friend and was very much crazy about Tammy. He came over as well because he couldn’t believe she was in town. Tammy hugged everyone, and that made Jerry very angry. She knew he did not like her hugging males or talking to males. Her family was okay, but anyone else was a problem. “So, Tammy, how has life been treating you?” asked Kevin. “I can’t complain,” replied Tammy. “All I can do is take it one day at a time.” “I know what you mean. I will be glad when I hit the lottery or something,” said Kevin as he laughed. “I know what you mean,” said Tammy as she laughed. Jerry did not like them talking. He hated Tammy talking to any other male if it wasn’t her family. He was furious, and stem was blowing from his nostrils. “When are you all coming back down?” asked Kevin. “Maybe we can hang out.” “I am not sure,” replied Tammy. That was it. He had just struck a nerve. Jerry knew he had to get up and get his wife out of there before he tore up her parents’ house. “Tammy, do you want to go for a ride with me?” asked Jerry. “I want a little alone time with my wife.” “Sure thing, but don’t you want to eat first, baby?” asked Tammy. “We will not be gone long. Besides, the food is not ready yet.” Tammy got up, and her father stood up with her. Where are you going, baby girl? Your mom is almost done cooking.” “Jerry asked me to ride with him. We’ll be right back, Dad,” said Tammy.
“Call me if you need anything,” said her father. “Where are you going so sudden?” asked her father. “I just want to check out something right quick. It will not take long,” replied Jerry. “Bring her right back,” said her father. “Call me if you need me.” “Okay, Daddy,” replied Tammy. Jerry and Tammy went to Tammy’s room and grabbed her purse and the keys to the car. When they walked out the door, they noticed Cord was standing outside smoking a cigarette. “Hey, sis, where are you going?” he asked. “Jerry wanted to take a ride, and the food wasn’t ready yet, so we decided to go for a drive,” replied Tammy. “Do you need me to go with you? I don’t trust this man. I am going to be honest with you. He looks like he is up to something,” said Cord. “Really, Cord? You need to stop assuming, bro. Finish your smoke and we will see you later. Don’t be saying stuff like that,” replied Tammy. “If you do not trust me, that is your problem, bro!” said Jerry. “This is my wife. She is your sister. Get your mind right before I get it right for you.” “Come on, Jerry,” responded Tammy. “Let’s get out of here.” “That’s your best out. I am not your bro, and don’t ever say that again. You got the right one this time. You are a big coward,” said Cord. “I got your coward,” replied Jerry as he got in the car with Tammy. “I will show you better than I can tell you,” he said as he drove off. Jerry was furious. He was already upset from Tammy hugging everyone. The conversation with her and Kevin at the table did not make it any better. Then her brother Cord wanted to confront him outside. He just had to get her out of the city limits and farther out. She disrespected him and allowed everyone else to do
so. She did not stop them, and she had no clue what he was thinking or up to. Tammy actually thought Jerry wanted to go for a ride and clear his head. She thought things would smooth over since they would be leaving right after dinner. Tammy was ready to go back to her parents’ house so she could enjoy the last few hours they had together. She did not tell Jerry; instead, she went along with him.
Chapter 9
Deceived by Spouse Again
“This is nice, huh, baby?” asked Tammy. She was excited. “What do you mean nice? You are hugging everyone and talking to all these men. Why do you choose to disrespect me the way you do?” replied Jerry. “Who is Kevin talking about hanging out? He must be out of his mind.” “What do you mean? What have I done?” Tammy asked. “You allowed those men to touch you. That’s what!” “Jerry, just take me back to my mom because I don’t have time for this,” replied Tammy. “I’ll take you back when I get ready.” He grabbed her and choked her. By that time, her father was calling her. “You better not answer.” Jerry stopped the car abruptly, and then he snatched her phone and threw it in the back seat. He got out of the car and walked around to her side of the car. He dragged her out by the collar of her shirt and threw her down to the ground and punched her repeatedly. Tammy was trying to fight him off, but he had her pinned down. Tammy’s phone was ringing nonstop. What he didn’t know was that her grandfather had their car bugged. They had been following them and noticed that the car had been in one spot for a long time. They got in their car and decided to drive to the location. They called the police so they could have backup. “I’m going to teach you a lesson you will never forget. I warned you not to embarrass me, and what did you do? Just the opposite.” He took out his gun and she started yelling.
“What are you doing?” asked Tammy. “Is that the reason why you married me? So I can be your punching bag? Someone you can mistreat?” “Don’t give me that crap. You are disrespectful. You know what I dislike, but you fail to recognize it. I’m not going to shoot you, but I’m going to pistol whoop you, and I bet you will never look at another man. He began hitting her with the pistol and kicking her. The first blow was to her head. By that time, they heard sirens coming. He told her to get up and get in the car. Tammy’s face was bruised and swollen. Tammy could hardly move, and all she could do was cry. She was in a great deal of pain. “Where are they going? I didn’t see a car on this road. Did you? I hope you saw one and didn’t tell me,” said Jerry. “I will beat you raggedy. If they stop right here, you better go along with whatever I say.” “Why don’t you just kill me and get it over with?” said Tammy. “I can’t even move. Just let me die.” “Get up. Come on! Get up. I will not go to jail!” yelled Jerry. He picked Tammy up and put her in the car and ran around to the driver’s side of the car. The sirens began to get closer, and they could see the police coming. Jerry began to put the key in the ignition and put the car in drive. “If they stop us, you better not say a word, or I’ll kill you,” said Jerry. “I just might because I would rather be dead than be with you,” said Tammy in a very weak voice. She started to blank out. The police pulled behind Jerry’s car, and right behind the police were Tammy’s father, grandfather, and siblings. They all ran to the car. “What’s going on? Tammy, what happened to you?” asked Cord. “Dad, look at her face.” Her dad started crying and walked around to the other side of the car. The police were already talking to Jerry, but her father wanted answers himself.
“What did you do to my daughter? She is not your punching bag, you punk. Hit a man. I bet you will not hit a man!” yelled her father. “I did not touch her,” replied Jerry. “Ask her. She fell, and I was trying to clean her up.” “It’s okay, cupcake. Papa is here. I heard him the other night. It’s okay. Did he hurt you?” She looked at Jerry, and then she looked at her siblings. She knew if she defended him, he would find a way to make her suffer. He had done it for so long. “No, Papa. We were running and playing, iring the country, and I fell in the ditch. He only ran to pick me up and help clean me off. He will never hurt me. We took vows, and he only protects and provides for me,” Tammy said in a very weak and crackling voice. She knew if she did not lie for him, he would only make her life worse. She was tired of being beat’n but did not know how to escape. The answer was right there in her face, but she did not want to upset Jerry. She knew he had a gun. Her face was swollen and she was bleeding, and she blamed it on her allergies. The police insisted that she go get treated at the hospital. She refused to go, but her father and papa overruled her decision and took her instead. She was quiet all the way there. Her brothers were holding her tight. Tammy kept closing her eyes. “Dad, this didn’t come from a fall,” said Jamie. “That punk hit my sister, and I’m going to kill him. I knew it the other day that something was off. I could feel it.” “We got to teach him a lesson,” said her father. “No, she did not get that way by falling. What kind of allergies she has? That’s my baby girl, and I raised her. I know everything about her.” “You are right, Dad. That fool got to get got,” replied Cord. “I knew something was going on when I overheard their conversation the other night,” her papa said.
“What do you mean overheard? Dad, why didn’t you tell me?” her father responded. “I wanted to make sure first, son. Now that it has been confirmed, I am going to do everything in my power to make sure she is safe,” said her papa. “Why do you think I put that GPS on their car? I have a few tricks up my sleeve.” They finally made it to the hospital, and Cord carried his sister in the hospital. “Help! Help! Help! My sister has been severely beat’n and needs some assistance. Please help her. Don’t let her die,” said Cord. “She was going in and out for a minute.” “Okay sir, we got her. We will take good care of her,” said Dr. Raymond. The doctor came out and reported to the family. Tammy had a concussion to her head and severe swelling all over her body. They insisted that she stay for a few days until the swelling went down. Her husband finally walked in and acted as if he was shocked by the doctor’s report. “Can I see my wife?” he asked. “She is sedated now, and we recommend that she has no visitors until tomorrow,” replied the doctor. “Okay, okay, okay. How did this happen? She only fell down a ditch. I didn’t see anything she could have hit her head on,” said her husband. “You know exactly what happened to my granddaughter, and you will pay,” said her papa. “I don’t know what you are talking about, and you heard what she said,” responded Jerry. “Anybody can be copped into saying anything, and you know it. It’s only a matter of time that everything hits the fan. Believe me when it does, my sister will be the last sister you put your hands on, brother,” said one of Tammy’s siblings.
Jerry looked at him and walked off. He left the hospital, and no one knew where he went. Tammy’s father and the rest of her family went back to her house. “Where’s my baby?” asked Tammy’s mother. “She’s in the hospital with a concussion, and that fool swears he did not hit her. She claims that it was her allergies, but come on, baby, we know it’s more to it than that,” said Tammy’s father. “What! Wait a minute. What do you mean hospital?” asked her mother. “What happened to my grandbaby?” said her grandmother. “This can’t be happening.” “Has Jerry been by here?” asked her father. “No, we haven’t seen him,” replied her mother. “Well, it has, and if that fool comes back here to try to get anything, don’t let him come in here,” her grandfather responded. Her father and grandfather took a bath and went back to the hospital to spend the night. They wanted to be there when he returned in case he tried something funny. When they got there, the doctor told them that Tammy’s condition had gotten worse. He also told them that they pulled her files, and this time was worse than the first time. “What do you mean the first time?” said her father. “Apparently, a year or so ago, she was hospitalized and had a miscarriage. She was in a coma and stayed in the hospital for two to three months. Also, she went to the hospital because she was beat’n and had a concussion and sprained ankle.” “Oh my god!” said her grandfather. “Cupcake never told us anything. That explains why she stayed away for so long.” “Wait until I get my hands on that bastard,” said her father. “I suggest you should the police. This is a serious matter because your daughter, sir, has slipped into a coma. She has swelling on her brain. We do not
know how long it will take to go down. The bad part is the bleeding on the brain. We are keeping our eyes on her,” said the doctor. “Bleeding, what do you mean bleeding?” asked her father. “This did not happen because of a fall or allergies. The police need to be notified immediately,” replied the doctor. Her father called the police. They came down to the hospital and talked. They examined the situation carefully. They told her father and grandfather that they would do all they could to help to bring him in. “We can’t tell her mom or your mom about this, son,” said her grandfather. “We have to wait until tomorrow and pray they catch that bastard.” “Okay, Dad, but I am not going anywhere,” replied her father. “Neither am I, son, neither am I,” said her grandfather as tears rolled down his face. The next morning, Jerry came in. The police were waiting for him and read him his rights. He cooperated with no problem and went down to the station. Her father and grandfather followed. “How many times have you beat’n my daughter!” yelled her father. “I did not beat her. You heard what she said, and the police heard what she said. You have nothing on me. She has not confessed to anything,” said Jerry. “She can’t even talk. She probably doesn’t even anything. For God’s sake, she’s in a coma!” yelled her grandfather. “We’re going to need you two to stand outside,” said the police. “Let us do our job.” “Make sure you don’t let this coward out,” said her father. Tammy’s father and grandfather went back inside the hospital. They called Tammy’s mother and grandmother. They told her siblings, and everyone met at the hospital. The doctor allowed them to go and see her. They said maybe if she
heard their voice, it might help her fight her way back around sooner. They each went in and talked to her one by one. Her mother and grandmother both came out crying. They were lost for words and didn’t know what to do. They sat around and talked among one another. By the time her father came out, Jerry was walking down the hallway. He walked straight by them and went in the room to talk to Tammy. Suddenly, the monitors started to go off. The doctors rushed in and told him he had to get out. “What did you do to my daughter, you bastard?” said her father. “What did you do?” “I didn’t do anything to her. I went in there to start talking to her, and suddenly the monitors went off,” responded Jerry. “That is mighty strange because all of us went in there, and not one monitor went off. Not one!” said her grandfather. “Don’t blame me. I am here for my wife just like all of you. If you’re not careful, I will set it up where no one can see her but me. Try me,” replied Jerry. “Try you,” laughed her father. “Who the hell do you think you are? That’s my damn daughter lying in that hospital bed. All because of you and your cowardness. You have touched her for the last time. I do not care how long it takes. You will pay for my daughter’s pain.” Her mother called her pastor down to offer prayer for Tammy and the entire family. She told him everything that had transpired. About ten minutes later, Pastor Richard and his wife were walking down the hallway. “Good afternoon, everyone. We are so sorry to hear that you all are going through such a difficult time. God never put no more on us than we can bear. I Tammy singing in the choir growing up. I never agreed with her decision on moving and leaving because it was something about that young man that just didn’t sit well with me,” said Pastor Richard.
“Pastor Richard, the doctor said this is not her first rodeo. He has hospitalized my daughter before, and she lost my grandchild,” replied her father. “Grandchild!” yelled her mother. “Why no one told me?” “Baby, we just found out from the doctor, and I did not want to upset you more than you already are. I was waiting on the right time to tell you all. The doctor told us she has been in a coma before. He also said this time may be longer than the last time, and they didn’t know,” said her father. “God allows everything to happen for a reason. No one wants to go through what Mrs. Tammy has been through. I know she is in a lot of pain, and that can cause a person to go in a shell. We’re going to pray and ask God for protection, healing, strength, and comfort. We’re going to ask Him to just let His presence fill this place and His will be done,” said Pastor Richard. “Do you think we can go into the room and pray with Tammy?” asked her grandmother. “Let me go ask the doctor,” her father said. “Where is her husband?” asked Pastor Richard. “He left, and no one knows where he went. It is best that he left because things were going to get real ugly. When he was here and went in the room, the monitors went off,” replied her grandfather. “That’s not a good sign,” Pastor Richard responded. Tammy’s father came back with the doctor. He told them they could not be loud, and too much noise could make things worse. They agreed and went in and prayed. Her vital signs immediately began to improve. The doctor went in and saw what was going on and smiled. “You have to be godsent, Pastor, because I wasn’t looking for those numbers anytime soon. Thank you for praying for my patient,” said the doctor. “I only do what God allows me to do, young man. He said, all I must do is open my mouth, and He will speak for me. I enjoy doing the work of the Lord. It’s always a pleasure to help a sister or brother in need.”
They all stood around and talked. “Doc, please don’t let her husband go in there. He makes her upset, and she does not respond to his voice properly,” her father stated. “As you wish, I will do my best to advise no more visitors until further notice. You all will have to adhere to whatever I tell him. I understand that you do not want to leave your daughter’s side, but when he is here, you cannot go in her room and visit,” replied the doctor. “Understood. We thank you, Doc,” said her father. “You’re a good man, and may God bless you,” her grandfather said. By that time, Jerry was walking in. “Is something wrong with my wife? I see the doctor and your pastor standing here. What’s going on?” asked Jerry. “Oh, everything is still the same. I was just telling the family that your wife needs her rest, and she does not need any visitors until vitals improve. The only way that can be done is if she can rest and have some peace and quiet,” replied the doctor. “Good evening, how are you doing, Mr. Jerry. Sorry to see your wife going through such a rough pack. I can reassure you that God has everything under control,” said Pastor Richard. “Where was God when my parents died? I don’t want to hear that!” Jerry yelled. “You have too much going on inside of you. Have you ever considered counseling?” Pastor Richard asked. “No disrespect, Pastor Richard, but I don’t need you or your God,” said Jerry as he walked off and down the hall and got on the elevator. “That young man needs some help. He has never been in church, and it’s going to take an act of God to turn him around. Well, we’re going to get going, and , we’re only a phone call away,” said Pastor Richard.
Tammy’s father shook the pastor’s hand and said, “Thank you and your wife for coming down. We really appreciate the both of you. Be careful going back home.” A month had ed, and Tammy still hadn’t opened her eyes. Her husband went to talk to the doctor. “Has the bleeding stopped yet? Is she going to make it? Should I be getting prepared to bury my wife? I am afraid because she has not opened her eyes yet. Is she still breathing?” “Jerry, these things take time. We must be patient. She is improving day by day,” said the doctor. “Well, give me a call when things change. I must drive back home to Southaven and go to work for a few days. My job only let me off for a few days. If anything changes, call me immediately. Not her parents, but me. I am her spouse and should be the first to know,” Jerry replied. “I sure will, Mr. Wade. You have a safe trip home,” the doctor replied. Time ed, and Jerry drove back and forth to check on his wife. Her parents and siblings went to check on her every day. Alongside them were her grandparents. Three more months ed by, and Jerry was beginning to get impatient. “Doctor, my wife has to be doing something. She has gotten to get better because I need her at home. I really miss her. I love my wife. She is all I have,” said Jerry. “You should have thought about that before you put your hands on her,” said her father. “If my baby girl doesn’t make it, you better give your soul to God.” “Is that a threat?” “Take it how you want it,” replied her father. “You need to watch what you say,” said Jerry.
“I should have been watching you, and maybe, my grandchild would not be going through all of this,” her father said. Jerry looked at him and walked off to Tammy’s room. Now how did they know about that? He was talking to himself. No one knew but me, her, and the doctors. She got to be talking. They’re lying to me. He pushed the door open, and Tammy was still just lying in the bed. “Tammy, you think I’m crazy, huh? Open your eyes. Open your eyes now. You did it for them. You are telling them what happened with the baby because I didn’t.” He walked up to her and put his hands on her eyes, and monitors went off left and right. The doctors forced him out. This time, they came out and said she had done a Uturn for the worse. Something caused her to have a setback. All the improvement, only to have a delay. “You bastard! What did you do to my daughter?” said her father. “What did you do? She was doing so well. Did you touch her, you sick and poor excuse of a man?” “Why would I touch her? That’s my wife. The love of my life,” replied Jerry. “You hit her before. Why not now, you creep?” said her grandfather. “Look. I told you I did not hit her, and that’s it,” replied Jerry. “Are you getting in my face?” asked her grandfather. “I know darn well you are not brushing up on my father,” replied Tammy’s father. “Who do you people think you are?” asked Jerry. “That’s my wife. I have the say-so over her. Not either one of you, and don’t make me have to remind you of it again. I told you I did not hit her, and that’s it.” “That’s my grandchild,” said her grandfather. “You coward, that’s my daughter. If you want to hit someone, hit me. I am a man. You weren’t raised to never put your hands on a woman?” responded her
father. Jerry laughed in their faces. “We all have been going in and out of that room, and nothing happened,” said her father. “Then low ad holy, you walk in and monitors go off everywhere. You think we are crazy? You’re doing something.” Jerry gave them a smirk and said, “That’s my wife and not yours. I do what I want when I want.” He then turned and walked out of the hospital. “You ole ignorant…” “Not right here, son,” said her grandfather, grabbing her father and calming him down. “He is not a man. He mocked us and walked away. I could have strangled that fool,” said Tammy’s father. “He’s not worth it,” replied her mother. “Let the police handle him.” Tammy’s mother called Pastor Richard and explained to him what had happened. He and his wife had just stopped by the day before. He told her that they were on their way.
Chapter 10
A New Beginning/Triumph
When Pastor Richard got to the hospital, he asked if only he and his wife could go in and pray with her. The family agreed. He and his wife went in and prayed and prayed and prayed. They called on the name of the Lord, and He showed up. They asked for a miracle, and without the monitors going off, her blood pressure began to rise and her oxygen level increased. Something happens when you call on Jesus. He is a miracle worker and a healer. When they left, he asked the doctor to come in and examine her. Pastor Richard walked down and talked to the family. The doctor ran out to the family. “I don’t know what you do when you go in that room, but miracles happen every time. Her blood pressure is back on track, and her oxygen level has improved. The most amazing thing ever. She even opened her eyes and asked for her parents.” The doctor was crying tears of joy. He knew there was nothing he could do for her and was praying that somehow God intervened. He did. God showed up and showed out. Her parents immediately ran in the room. “Baby, we are here,” said her mother. “Mom… Dad… am I going to be all right? I am afraid. I heard Jerry, and he touched me, and I thought I was dead. Then suddenly, I saw a bright light and heard a voice say, ‘Not right now, my child,’” said Tammy. Her parents began to cry. “We’re so glad you are okay,” said her mother.
“Don’t worry, baby girl. Jerry is going to pay for what he has done to you,” her father said. “Please, Dad, don’t make things worse for me. I am scared,” replied Tammy. “As long as I’m living, you never have to worry,” her father said. “First thing first. I am going to have surveillance set up in here with audio. We need proof, and he isn’t so careful. He always slips up, and when he does, I’ll be there to catch him.” “Baby, you have to lay here and get your rest. You must act as if you have never opened your eyes. We don’t want him to know. Get your rest and know we are always outside the door,” said her mother. “I love you all. I really do, but please stop,” said Tammy. “He is going to kill me if he finds out. I have been through enough. He has a gun.” “Okay, baby girl, Daddy understands. Get some rest. We will be outside.” They kissed her and walked out the door. Her father insisted that the doctor give her something to put her to sleep. He told the doctor what he had planned to do and how afraid she was. The doctor did what her father asked, and cameras were installed. Now, all they had to do was wait. Jerry came back the following weekend. He was excited because the doctor had called and told him his wife had woken up. “Hi, baby, I bought you these flowers. I miss you so much. I am so sorry. I promise to never hit you again.” “Baby, you said that before, and every time, you hurt me. You supposed to protect me, but you put me in the hospital, and I miss months of progress from my own life, while you continue to live your life,” said Tammy. “What did I ever do to you? I have been a good and faithful wife. I promise you, I have never kissed or been with any man besides you. It hurts me to my soul that the man I fell in love with has turned into someone I don’t recognize.” “Tammy, it’s me. I am going to change. I can’t dare see you in this situation again. I am so sorry about the miscarriage. For punching you, taking the cover and making you freeze, kicking you, and just abusing you, period. I am so
sorry.” Tammy was crying. “How do I know you are not just saying that to make me believe you?” “Baby, I just want us to go back to how we used to be,” said Jerry. “Jerry, how can we? I am in prison with you. I can’t talk to a male or hug a male. You think they want me or I want them. I told you over and over again, but you never believed me. We came all the way home, and look at what happened to me. I lied to the police and my parents to protect you. Jerry, when will this end and my happiness begin?” asked Tammy. Jerry looked at his wife and saw the hurt in her eyes. “I promise you on the life of my parents that I will try to do better. I mean that, Tammy. I am serious. These past few months have been the worst of my life. I thought I lost you. Baby, I am sorry,” said Jerry. “I want to trust you again. I want to believe in our marriage again, but right now it is so hard. All of the hurt and the neglect really make me feel unappreciated,” replied Tammy. “I can’t undo what I did. I should have treated you like you deserve to be treated, but I did not. I should have been cherishing you, but I did not. I should have been a man and never hit you, but I did not. I am going to seek help, baby. I am going to do better. You are all I have, and I cannot live my life without you by my side,” said Jerry. Tammy broke down in tears because she really wanted to believe her husband, but he had put her through so much already. She wanted to give him another chance to get it together but couldn’t help but wonder if he would kill her. Jerry had beat’n her so much, and she just couldn’t bear to go through that again. She knew her worth, and if she went back, she knew he would most likely kill her. Tammy just didn’t know how to tell him. “Jerry, I am hurting so bad right now,” replied Tammy. “Do you want me to get a doctor, baby?” asked Jerry.
“No, I mean my heart and soul is hurting, and I do not know what to do,” replied Tammy. “All I ask is one chance to get it right. Just one chance to make it up to you, and I promise you will not regret it. I am going to treat you like the queen you are,” said Jerry. “So, what do you say?” By that time, the police were walking in the door. “What is going on here?” asked Jerry. “Tammy, what did you say? Baby, what did you do?” “It wasn’t me, Jerry. I did not say anything. You will see. I promise, I have not said a word,” replied Tammy. “It was me,” said her father, walking in the room. “What did you do?” asked Jerry. “We were only talking.” “I am protecting my daughter. I will rather see her alive than dead. She is going to bury me, and I will not bury her. Get out of my face and leave my daughter alone,” said her father. “You have nothing against me. Tammy, I will not be gone long. I will be right back,” replied Jerry. Tammy sat there, crying and lost for words. They read Jerry his rights and took him down to the police station and booked him. Tammy questioned what her father had done. “Dad, what is going on? What did you do?” asked Tammy. “I have to be honest, baby. I saw that you were terrified and that you would never turn on your husband, but you are my baby, and I will not let anyone hurt you. As long as I have breath in my body, I will always do my best to take care of you. I will make sure that you are protected in every way. I will be in jail before you end up hurt again,” replied her father. “Dad, I am a big girl now, and I can take care of myself. I can handle him,” said
Tammy. “Baby girl, that man has really caused you a lot of hurt in your life. Love will not abuse and use you. Love will not mislead you and neglect you. Love will cherish and protect you by any means necessary. Love will not put you in the hospital and cause you to have a miscarriage and break you apart as if you are nobody. We are your family, and we love you, and we are going to do all we can to protect you,” replied her father. “I love y’all too, Daddy,” said Tammy. She lay in her Daddy’s arms and cried her poor heart out. She realized if he hadn’t done that, she would be back in the car heading home to that same lifestyle. Her family was looking out for her best interest. When they showed Jerry the evidence they had against him, all he could do was plead guilty because he did not want to go to trial. He had committed murder of his unborn child and attempted murder twice of his wife. He faced twenty years in jail without parole, and when he’d get out, he would have to take anger management classes and stay far away from Tammy as possible. If he went near her, he would serve the rest of his life in jail. Tammy was relieved, and she could finally get her life back. She thanked her family for their and unconditional love. Pastor Richard and his wife came to visit once Tammy was released from the hospital. Tammy sat with the family and told them about the last few years of her life. She had lived in fear for so long. Being beat’n badly and put in the hospital three times was more than she had bargained for. The doctors even told her that she could not have children of her own. It broke her down badly. She thanked God for bringing her out of a bad situation. Pastor Richard prayed for her and the entire family. They had dinner and enjoyed the evening. “Tammy, God has brought you out of this situation for a reason. Always keep Him first in your life. It is when we neglect God that things go wrong in our lives. So many times, we act as if the people and material things are our god, but there is only one God. He sits up high and looks down below. It’s like the church of Ephesus in Revelation when they left their first love. Christ is our first love,
and we must acknowledge Him in all we do. We all do not like what Jerry took you through, but God delivered you for a reason. Many don’t get the chance that you have gotten, and many don’t have a loving family like you do. Do not forget that. God has a purpose for your life,” said Pastor Richard. “Thank you, and I will not forget it. I really appreciate you, Pastor,” said Tammy. “Thank you also, Sis. Richard. Thanks for being there and praying for me. I heard your prayers, and you are a very powerful woman of God. If you do not mind, I will be calling you from time to time for advice.” “You’re more than welcome. God is able, and He gets all the glory,” replied Sis. Richard. “Take good care of yourself, and know that our doors are always open.” “Thank you all for the hospitality. My wife and I really appreciate it, but we must get back to the little ones. You all have a wonderful night,” said Pastor Richard. They walked them to the door, and they left. The family was just glad that Tammy was safe and home where she belonged. She had been through too much in her life, and it was time for her to be happy. When she got home to her room, she found the phone she had bought and called Shonda. “Hi, girl. It has been almost a year since I have talked to you. I used to see Jerry come in and out until a while ago. He has not been back in a while now,” replied Shonda. “Girl, that is why I called. He got me home and almost killed me. I am out of the hospital and doing better. He is locked up, and we are getting a divorce. I thank God for my family. They saved my life. I thank God for you because when I moved up there, you took me under your wing and treated me like family,” said Tammy. “That’s because you are family. You are my family. I miss you. I am going to have to make a trip down there. You’re not going to get away from me that easy,” replied Shonda. “I don’t plan on dodging you. We are bonded for life,” said Tammy.
They both laughed and talked for almost two hours. Tammy hung up the phone and went to have a heart-to-heart conversation with her parents and thank her siblings and grandparents for being there for her. They were all sitting in the living room. “Hi, everyone, I have something to say,” said Tammy. “What is wrong?” asked her father as he walked toward her and held her hands. “I just want to thank all of you for helping me and saving my life. You all noticed the hurt and the pain, even when I thought I was covering it up. I was afraid to speak up and rescue myself, although I was home with you all. I did not realize how terrified I was of him. I did not realize how much control he had over me and my life. I lost my baby because of him. The doctor said I cannot have any more children because of him, and I am hurting really bad right now. I do not know what to do. I will continue to trust God because He did not bring me this far to leave me. No one could have told me three years ago that I would experience so much hurt and disappointment in my lifetime. I would be lost without all of you. I want you all to know how much I love you. Each and every one of you holds a special place in my heart, and I will never take you or my life for granted again. I will wait on God,” said Tammy as tears rolled down her face. “Can you all ever forgive me for being such a fool and not calling but shutting you all out of my life? I have been beat’n several times, but I’m not broken. It made me stronger.” “Awww, baby girl, it is not your fault,” said her father. “That’s right,” stated her mother. “You better know bro got your back, no matter what,” stated Cord. They all sat around and laughed and talked. Tammy was happy to be home where she felt safe and secure. She felt as if God had delivered her, and now, she could finally live and fulfill her purpose in life. A couple of months ed, and Tammy met an old classmate. It was Tyler Townsend. He was so happy to see her. “Hi, stranger, how are you?” asked Tyler.
“I am well, and yourself?” replied Tammy. “I haven’t seen you since you got married and moved away with Jerry. I never liked the guy, but you chose him over me,” said Tyler. “It didn’t work out. We’re divorced. What’s your story? Are you married? Do you have any children?” asked Tammy. “No wife, no children. Just work and my three-bedroom, two-full-bath house. I figured once I get myself together, it would all work out. Do you want to get a bite with me?” replied Tyler. “I am all right. I thank you for the invite,” said Tammy. “Really, I don’t bite,” replied Tyler. “I don’t know that,” said Tammy. “Okay, just one time. If you are uncomfortable, you can leave,” replied Tyler. “Okay, just one time,” said Tammy. They sat and talked for hours. Tammy told him about her marriage with Jerry and that she just couldn’t trust anyone. She told him how hard it was to even look at another male after being treated the way she had been treated. It was getting better, but things for her were still kind of rough. Tyler asked if he could call and talk to her sometime, and they exchanged numbers. They talked on the phone for hours and got to know each other a little better. Time ed, and they went on their first official date. “Tammy, I have watched you go, come out of the toughest situation, and I know it was nobody but God that did it. You are a very strong Black woman who endured so many hardships in life, and my heart goes out to you. I know it is not easy, but things will get better for you,” said Tyler. “Thank you, Tyler. That means a lot to me. It is hard dealing with the fact that I fell in love with someone I thought truly loved and cared about me. I felt like dying so many times and wondered why me, but I found out why. Sometimes we can take God out of the equation, and then it is all hell from there. I found myself, and I found my way back to God,” replied Tammy.
“I thank God for that because He brought you back to where you belong. He brought you home and back to me. I have loved you since the first time I laid eyes on you. I was devastated without you, and I prayed to God that if you were meant to be with me, to bring you back,” said Tyler. “I want to believe you. I need to take it slow. I can say that you have been a joy to be around,” replied Tammy. “I understand,” said Tyler. “I will always be here for you. Always.” They continued talking and enjoyed the rest of their evening. Tammy hadn’t smiled and laughed like that in a very long time. She was beginning to feel free again. Two years ed, and Tammy got her LPN and RN licenses. She was so excited that she had her family and a great boyfriend, who was an RN himself on his way to getting his doctorate degree. At her graduation dinner, Tyler asked her to marry him. She was afraid because it seemed like déjà vu all over again. She did not know what to say. “Tammy, listen to me, baby. I know what you have been through, and I am a man, baby. I know not to ever put my hands on you, but to cherish you like the queen you are. I know that you have feelings, and I know that you are a gift from God. You do not have to be afraid to move on and live your life. It was God that put us together, and when He puts something together, it can’t be broken. You complete me, Tammy, and I just can’t have you as my girlfriend all my life. I need you to be my wife. That’s the way God planned it to be. Take my hand and allow me to be your husband,” said Tyler. Tammy looked up with tears rolling down her face. Her family was there to her. “I understand if you need time to think about it. I will not rush you, baby,” said Tyler. “I don’t need time. I am all right. I am going to trust God and say yes. Yes, I will marry you, Tyler,” replied Tammy. Tyler grabbed her and hugged her as tears rolled down his face. “You have made me the happiest man alive,” said Tyler as he hugged her tighter and didn’t want to let her go. Their families gave them their blessings and wished them well.
“We can have any kind of wedding you want,” said Tyler. “As long I get to marry the most beautiful woman God has placed on this earth.” Tammy was lost for words. She was happy and thanked God and asked Him to lead her in the right direction. Tammy got her bridesmaid, matron of honor, and maid of honor and planned the wedding she always wanted. The next year, they married on Valentine’s Day, and her father gave her away. They wrote their own vows and rode on a chariot afterward as doves were released. They each took two weeks off work and celebrated their honeymoon. They went to Las Vegas, and you know what they say. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Tammy always acknowledged God in everything she did. She ed what her pastor had told her. Their honeymoon went by extremely fast. They both wanted to relive it all over again. Tyler made sure Tammy was well taken care of and treated her like a queen. Every Monday and Friday, he would have flowers sent to her; and every Wednesday and Saturday night, he took her out on a date. He cooked for her and made sure she did not have to worry about anything. One day while working, Tammy began to feel sick. She was so afraid that she began shaking. She knew the doctors told her she couldn’t get pregnant and was sure she wasn’t. She thought that maybe she had a virus or something. She had never really been sick with a cold or anything but just didn’t want anything else bad to happen to her. Her husband worked downstairs in the ER. They paged him to the second floor. They had itted Tammy for observation. When her blood work came back, she was eight weeks pregnant. They wanted to make sure everything was all right, because a miracle had transpired. Her records indicated that she could not bear children, but God said otherwise. Tammy and Tyler couldn’t have been any happier because they were having their first child together. Although Tammy was scared, she had a strong husband who believed in God and the power of His might. He reassured his wife that God was in control and that He would never put no more on her than she could bear. She had been through the storm; now it was time for her to reap the harvest. They went to every doctor’s visit together, and he made sure she ate healthy. The doctor asked Tammy if she wanted to know the sex of her babies, and she looked at her husband in a state of shock.
“Babies, what do you mean babies?” laughed Tammy with excitement. “From the looks of things, Mrs. Townsend, you all are having twins,” replied the nurse. “Twins,” said Tammy as she looked at Tyler. “Well, baby, I am not surprised because twins run in my family on my father’s side of the family. All I want are healthy babies and a safe delivery for them and you,” replied Tyler. “God knew exactly what I needed. I thank Him for you every day,” said Tammy as tears rolled down her face. Tyler grabbed his wife’s hand and kissed her as he wiped her tears. “We will wait and be surprised,” Tammy told the nurse. “However, we want the CD,” laughed Tammy. “That will not be any trouble, and may God bless your union. You all have something special, and do not let anyone come between that,” said the nurse. “You can believe I won’t,” replied Tyler. A few months later, Tammy gave birth to twins, a little girl and a boy. They named their son Job Tyler Townsend because Job endured a lot but remained faithful to God. He lost everything he had, but God blessed him with double what he had lost. They named their daughter Abigail Mercy Townsend because Abigail thought she could not have children, but God granted her a son. Mercy because God had shown favor and mercy and blessed them with not one but two healthy, beautiful babies. Tammy was overwhelmed with joy because she had gotten her life back. Everything her grandmother and mother had told her was not in vain. The teaching that she had ed from her youth had paid off, and she was going to trust God and go with Him all the way. She understood why she went through the things she did. God had to get her attention and show Him who He is. She had gotten married and went off to live what she thought was the good life without God. She found out the hard way that God had His own plan for her, and she could not avoid it.
