 Create a winter skin care routine with natural ingredients to cleanse, moisturize, and hydrate. Does your skin feel tight and dry this time of year? Sometimes, skin can lose moisture and some of its natural oils can become depleted. It can be so 2

uncomfortable. And using soap—even all natural, organic soap—can just make your skin feel more dried out. I have a winter skin care routine you can try that uses all natural ingredients. It’s a nourishing cycle that keeps skin clean, healthy, and feeling great . . . and looking great, too! The first step is cleansing… …and for that you can use aloe (Aloe barbadensis). Just pure aloe vera gel! Aloe is soothing and cooling, and can cleanse impurities from skin. Fill a 1 oz (30 ml) glass bottle with aloe vera gel, and use it every night instead of soap to wash your face. Just massage it into your skin, and then rinse with warm water. You can use a cotton face round if you like. The next step is hydrating… …and for that, use a few spritzes of Rose hydrosol (Rose damascena). You can just pour 1 oz (30 ml) Rose hydrosol into a glass spray bottle, and dampen your skin with it. This helps to restore hydration, and to tone skin at the same time. (And it smells so good!) The next step is moisturizing… …and for that part, use avocado oil (Persea gratissima). Again, you can use a 1 oz (30 ml) glass bottle, and fill it with pure avocado oil. When your skin is still a little damp with the Rose hydrosol, massage a small dab of avocado oil into it. This works as a moisturizer and humectant, which means it helps skin to retain its natural moisture. You can keep your skin hydrated throughout the day with your Rose hydrosol spritz. Carry it with you in a bag, and spritz it onto your skin whenever it starts to feel a little dried out. This is so refreshing, both for your skin and your energy— you might want to make a bigger spray bottle of it and use it as a body spray! How to Make Your Own Sugar Scrub I created this sugar scrub recipe last year and have loved using it! The recipe calls for vanilla-infused jojoba oil. You can either make the vanilla jojoba yourself or purchase it. To make your own, simply buy whole vanilla bean pods (Amazon.com has organic ones: Vanilla Beans (Whole) Organic – 4 Pods), add 3 or 4 to a large 8

glass jar (16-32 oz/.5-1.0 litre is good), fill the jar with jojoba and let it sit for about a week. Remove the vanilla bean pods, and you’re left with the most luscious vanilla-infused jojoba for your sugar scrub and other essential oil body-care products! Coconut, Lime, Lavender & Vanilla Sugar Scrub A fabulous, soft scrub for your skin Ingredients ½ cup brown sugar ¼ cup coconut oil ¼ cup vanilla-infused jojoba 30 drops distilled Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) 30 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Combine all ingredients in a 12 oz (360 ml) container Be sure to use **distilled** Lime as the cold pressed lime is phototoxic. Note: I like to use a PET plastic container (12 oz/360 ml or larger) and leave the scrub in the shower. Use a handful on your arms, legs and back. I don’t use it on my face. It can make the shower floor slippery. If it does, I wipe the floor with a paper towel after my shower.

A Vanilla-Infused Jojoba Massage Oil by Andrea Butje on September 5, 2016 I love infusing carrier oils with herbs and spices! Jojoba wax is especially nice when it’s infused with other scents. It has no scent of its own, so it holds the pure aroma of whatever you infuse into it. If 9

you infuse it with balsam fir absolute, you’ll smell balsam fir. If you infuse it with vanilla, you’ll smell vanilla. You can make your own vanilla-infused jojoba wax. If you use a lot of jojoba (like me!) this is so worth it! I like to make 8 oz (240 ml) at a time. You can just reuse the same bottle, and the same glob of vanilla oleoresin, over and over. The oleoresin doesn’t lose its aroma. Here’s how to make vanilla-infused jojoba:



Put a glob of vanilla oleoresin in an 8 oz (240 ml) bottle. (Okay, a “glob” isn’t very precise! I don’t measure. A “glob” is about a tablespoon.) If y ou don’t have oleoresin, you can use 10 vanilla beans instead—although you’ll need to replace these every time you want to make a fresh bottle. Add 8 oz (240 ml) of Jojoba wax (Simmondsia chinensis).



Let it sit for about two weeks.



Ta da! Vanilla-infused jojoba!



It makes such a beautiful massage oil. You can use it just as it is, or add essential oils. Here’s a recipe that I love right now—it’s got the rich aromas of conifer and resin essential oils layered in with the vanilla, and it’s so decadent!

Siberian Vanilla Massage Oil 

1 oz (30 ml) Vanilla-infused jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) 6 drops Siberian Fir essential oil (Abies siberica)



4 drops Myrrh essential oil (Commiphora myrrha)



You can make this blend in a 1 oz (30 ml) glass bottle. 10

There are essential oils you can use to help to reduce pain and address specific issues. You can learn some of these oils—and how to use them—in my FREE webinar, “Reduce Your Clients’ Pain Using Aromatherapy.” I created the webinar for massage therapists who want to help their clients, but it’s useful for anyone who wants to learn ing essential oils for massage.

Cedarwood Essential Oil Cedarwood essential oil has a steady, reassuring strength. It’s versatile, gentle, and powerful. It offers in a wide range of blends, from respiratory inhalers to skin care creams, and both adults and children love its warm, woody aroma. Something about Cedarwood reminds me of sitting on a park bench under the shelter of a tall cedar tree. 11

In the blends below, I’m using three different Cedarwood essential oils: Cedrus atlantica, Cedrus deodara, and Juniperus virginiana. These three Cedarwoods are often good substitutes for each other, but I’ve included the Latin name in each blend so you’ll know exactly which Cedarwood I’m using.

1. Cedarwood connects us with our calm inner strength. Cedarwood essential oil has the ability to see us through tough times. It can help us move steadily and securely through long projects . . . or through long, cold (sometimes dark) seasons like winter. This recipe is for a chest cream for kids that’s soothing, fortifying, and helpful for both preventing and remedying a cold. It’s especially nice at bedtime, when it can calm kids and help them breathe so they drift off comfortably. Ingredients 

1 oz (30 ml) unscented cream or jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) 3 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)



2 drops Elemi (Canarium luzonicum)



1 drop Lemon (Citrus limon)



Directions Just blend your essential oils into your cream or jojoba, in a 1 oz (30 ml) jar. I recommend using this blend (and any essential oil blend) for kids over five years old. Rub it on their chest every few hours and before bed.

2. Cedarwood is ideal for respiratory health. Cedarwood is such a ive essential oil for respiratory health—especially for children, who love its sweet foresty scent. Its decongestant properties can protect kids against colds, and can help them recover more quickly if they come down with one. When I create a diff blend that I love, I make a stock bottle of it—I increase the recipe and put it in a 5 ml amber glass bottle. That way I can use 12

the blend multiple times without having to run all over the house gathering the right essential oils. So if I use 10 drops in a diff, and increase the recipe six times, I have 60 drops (and six uses) in my stock blend. Here’s a great stock blend you can make with Cedarwood: Ingredients  

40 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) 20 drops Orange (Citrus sinensis)

Use 5–10 drops in an electric diff, and run it for 15-30 minutes in the room where the child is playing. You can do this a few times a day. This blend’s calm, steady properties make it perfect to diffuse before a child’s bedtime, too. Just run the diff for half an hour, and turn it off when bedtime actually arrives. The Breathe Easy blend is generally fine to diffuse in a room with kids of any age, as long as the diff is safely out of reach and not right under their noses.

3. Cedarwood can help you focus during bright and crisp winter days. This foresty diff blend is a friendly companion that helps you focus and accompanies you into the evening. You can make it in a 5 ml orifice reducer bottle. Ingredients  

20 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica) 20 drops Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) 13

20 drops Balsam fir (Abies balsamea)

If you have an electric diff, use about 5-10 drops of your blend. Do you have a wood stove? Put a cast iron pot filled with water on top of it, and add 5-10 drops of your blend. (This is one of my favorite ways to diffuse essential oils in winter!) You can also use a stovetop soup pot. Just boil some water, turn off the stove, and add 5-10 drops of your blend. (Or you can just place a bowl of steaming water on the counter. Be sure to set it on a heat-safe surface, such as a trivet, and be careful when handling the hot bowl.) The essential oils in this blend are also excellent respiratory oils.

4. Cedarwood goes great in candles! Have you ever made your own natural beeswax candles? It’s such a fun hobby! And it’s reassuring to know that your only two ingredients are beeswax and essential oils. Cedarwood is a great essential oil to use when making candles because it’s a base note—and has a long-lasting aroma that fill the entire room as the candle burns. 14

The basic recipe is 25 drops of essential oil (about 1 ml) for every 1 oz (28 g) of beeswax. One of my favorite essential oil combinations is: Ingredients  

½ Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) ½ Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)

I appreciate linen sprays so much that I’ve written three other blog posts with different recipes over the past two years! You can find those posts here: 8 Hours of Sleep, Dust Mites and Need More Sleep. All three posts have a linen spray recipe or idea for you. Here I am again. Another linen spray recipe. This one’s a current favorite and I take it with me traveling! 15

In a 2 oz (60 ml) spray bottle combine: 2 oz (60 ml) Vetiver hydrosol 5 drops Vetiver essential oil (Vetiveria zizanoides) 3 drops Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis) 5 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) I recommend making this product fresh every few weeks, as it does not have a preservative in it. Along with the aroma sending me right off to sleep, the oils offer immune . So what’s not to love about linen sprays? Enjoy!

We all have those nights when sleep escapes us. Fortunately, there are some amazing essential oils for sleep that can help you get your eight hours. Try this blend to assure a good night sleep. In addition to using essential oils for sleep, here are a few tips to help you drift off to dreamland. If you know other people who would enjoy this recipe, feel free to share it. (A well-rested world is a happy world, right?) If you have success, I would love to know! Check out this new linen spray for sleep I’ve been making: Sleepytime Linen Spray 2 oz (60 ml) of German Chamomile hydrosol 15 drops of Roman Chamomile essential oil (Chamaemelum nobile) 3 drops of Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis) 16

Dust mites. I know, not the most fun topic. What are they, exactly? There is a website dedicated to these creepy little creatures called Dustmites.org. They define dust mites as “microscopic creatures that live in your bedding by the millions and cause allergies.” In fact, they say that “Dust Mite Allergies are the most common type of allergy. It’s been estimated that 70% of all allergy sufferers are allergic to dust.” This website has some good suggestions, like removing carpeting in bedrooms, improving ventilation with air conditioning or opening the windows, and vacuuming or mopping floors weekly (I would try daily for awhile). But they did not mention Geraniol . . .

Geraniol, the primary component in Palmarosa essential oil (Cymbopogon martini var. motia) was proven in a 2008 research study to be one of the most effective essential oil constituents for controlling dust mites (which can aggravate respiratory allergies) and is considered more effective than DEET (1). To fight dust mites with essential oils, I suggest using a simple linen spray made with Palmarosa and Lavender. After washing your linens in a hot wash, spray it on your sheets a few times a day. Dust Mite Linen Spray 8 oz (240 ml) water in a spray bottle 60 drops Palmarosa essential oil 20 drops Lavender essential oil I recommend making a fresh bottle every few weeks. Research Reference: 1. People often ask me about sleep–specifically, how to get more of it! We wrote a post about essential oils for sleep that you can read here. In addition to the ideas in our previous post about essential oils for sleep, I would add a linen spray. Use the spray on your sheets right before you get into bed. It works like a dream! (Sorry, couldn’t resist!) Linen spray: 2 oz (60 ml) of water 15 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) 3 drops Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) Spray your sheets and under your pillow . . . and off you go to an aromatic dreamland! I recommend making this product fresh every few weeks.

In 2007, a study by Sleep Foundation found that three out of ten women reported only getting a good night’s sleep a few times a month. For many women, the frequent trips to the restroom and a solid serving of anxiety in the evening leaves them feeling tired in the morning. Here are some tips to help you get to sleep naturally. Diffusing Lavender essential oil: I use the Spa Mist Diff on my nightstand. About thirty minutes before bedtime, I add five drops of Lavender and turn it on. When I head to bed, the entire room has a comforting, relaxing Lavender aroma. In a pinch, I’ll just drop one or two drops right on the side of the mattress near my pillow. A cotton ball works just as well. Essential oil blends for sleep: When blending for sleep, use your nose and your instincts. You’ve got many great choices. I try to keep it simple, using unscented lotion or jojoba oil as the carrier. I apply the lotion to the back of my neck and wrists. Oils like Rosewood, Roman Chamomile and Lavender work beautifully in sleep blends.

Here are some additional sleep tips that help me:  

Consider removing your television set from the bedroom. Eliminate indoor allergens whenever possible. (Clean the sheets often, avoid curtains, use an air purifier and a room spray with essential oils.)



Maintain a comfortable temperature in the room. This may mean more or less clothing, thinner or thicker comforters, or opening the windows.



Keep it dark. If you have trouble sleeping, even an overly-bright clock can keep you up.



If you’re getting lost in your thoughts, just get up and do something soothing for a while, like reading a favorite magazine.



Avoid caffeine, at least in the late afternoons and evenings.



The holidays are a busy time of year for a lot of us. Family, friends, events, and all the festivities of the season can make for fun, full schedules . . . but they can also leave us feeling out of balance. Fortunately, Aromatherapy can offer excellent help for stress relief and emotional balance. There are so many essential oils you can use to inspire that 23

peaceful, happy feeling you have when you know you can handle what’s in front of you. I want to share a holiday stress relief blend that’s really effective and convenient—you can tuck it into your pocket or a bag, and just roll it on your pulse points whenever the need arises. Holiday Stress Relief This blend is made in a glass roller-top bottle that holds about .35 oz (10 ml) of liquid. That’s a little bigger than a lip balm tube. 

.35 oz (10 ml) vanilla-infused jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) 2 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)



2 drops Opopanax essential oil (Commiphora guidotti)



2 drops Sweet Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis)



You can get your roller-top bottle from Aromatics International. (But I think I should warn you . . . They have so many fun, creative oils and bottles! You’re bound to have a big shopping list after seeing their selection.) To make your blend, fill your bottle with your jojoba (you might need a small funnel or a dropper to get the jojoba in such a small bottle), and then add your essential oils drop by drop. Snap the roller-top into place, screw on the lid, and shake gently. It’s not always easy to realize when you’re getting stressed out. After all, if you could recognize it before it happened, you’d try to stop it! So you can use this blend throughout your day to keep stress at bay, or take it out when you feel suddenly overwhelmed. Roll it over your wrists and on the pulse points in your neck. This blend smells beautiful, so it can double as a perfume. Happy Holidays! Freshen the bathroom - spray and wipe - beaming clean!

I just love seeing (and tasting!) the variety of meals, side dishes, and desserts people create. A lot of people reserve their best recipes for the holidays, and don’t make them at any other time of year. Tasting everything is so tempting! But it can take a toll on your tummy, especially if you’re going to several events in one day. The next time you find you’ve over-indulged—maybe your mouth is happy but there are a few too many tight buttons on your jeans—you can try this recipe. It’s an Aromatherapy inhaler for digestion. It’s made with essential oils that are known to stimulate digestion, reduce nausea, and ease an upset stomach. Happy Belly Inhaler for Digestion 

4 drops Cardamom (Ellettaria cardamomum) 3 drops Ginger (Zingiber officinale)



5 drops Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)



3 drops Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)



If you’ve never made an Aromatherapy inhaler, don’t worry—it’s very simple. There are four parts to the inhaler: a piece of cotton that absorbs the essential oils, a sleeve to hold the cotton, a cap to snap in place and stop the cotton from falling out, and a lid that slides over it all so the essential oils don’t evaporate. The cotton inserts aren’t currently made with organic cotton. So if you prefer organic, you can buy your own organic cotton face-cleansing rounds and just trim them down to size. The essential oils in this recipe are all famous for offering stomach . The Ginger and Cardamom are spicier essential oils, and combining them with Sweet Orange and Roman Chamomile really softens their edges when you inhale them. The overall aroma is warm, citrusy, spicy, and a bit floral (that’s the Roman Chamomile making its presence felt!). You can use this inhaler every fifteen minutes or so before eating, while you eat, and after you eat. Aromatherapy inhalers are convenient because you can take them everywhere with you, and nobody else will even smell them. It’s just for you! Enjoy the holidays!

Cypress essential oil can ease sore feelings and sore muscles at the same time. Combined with Orange essential oil, "Happy Muscles and Good Moods Bath Salt" has a ive presence in the comfort of a warm bath. 30

Understanding top, middle, and base notes in aromatherapy We talk a lot about top, middle, and base notes in aromatherapy. What do we mean exactly, and how can you identify each note? 31

Not every aromatherapy blend has to have all three notes. Making a balanced blend just means you consider and understand which aromas tend to be more dominant, and use fewer drops of the really strong aromas. It helps to begin by imagining the feeling or experience that you want to embody in the blend. For blends that do have top, middle, and base notes, you might have to take your time getting to know the aromas before you can identify all three. I like to take different kinds of sniffs—long, slow, deep sniffs sometimes allow me to smell different notes than quick little bunny sniffs! Here’s what you’re smelling for. . . Top notes This is the first aroma you notice when you smell a blend. That’s because the molecules are evaporating more quickly than the others in the oil. It’s usually a light, fresh, sharp scent—like a citrus. In fact, the citrus oils are all top notes! Examples of top notes would be Orange (Citrus sinensis) and Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi).

Middle notes Middle notes have a very full, soft, character that gives a blend a lot of heart. This is why they’re sometimes called “heart notes!” Some people have an easier time identifying top and base notes, rather than middle notes, partly because middle notes can include both top and base aromas within them. Imagine top notes as a bright citrus tea, and base notes as a dark root tea. Middle notes would be a full-flavored, floral tea with hints of roots and maybe a little orange peel. A few examples are Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and Neroli (Citrus aurantium var. amara).

Base notes Base notes are intense, earthy, deep, and warm. They create the “undertones” of a blend. This doesn’t mean you won’t notice them as they have a very strong presence, it just means that they may be the last aroma you notice when 32

smelling a blend, or the deepest aroma giving weight to the other scents. This is because base notes evaporate more slowly than top notes. Some examples of base notes are Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) and Patchouli (Pogostemom cablin). This is a picture of Vetiver:

essential oils for common children's ailments including sniffles and tummy aches. If you search for information ing essential oils for kids, you’ll probably find a lot of differing approaches. At Aromahead Institute, I take a somewhat conservative approach. I like to stick with a few key essential oils 34

that I know to be extremely gentle, and I like to use as little oil as possible to create the therapeutic effects I’m after. I call this “The Aromahead Approach.” As an Aromatherapy educator and the founder of Aromahead Institute, I’m always happy to offer my perspective on using essential oils for children. If you’re a parent or a caretaker, making homemade Aromatherapy blends for kids can offer real peace of mind. It allows you to know exactly what’s going on your children’s skin or what they’re breathing in, and you can trust that what’s in your blends is pure and natural—no potentially harsh chemicals. And kids love the way essential oils smell! If you search for information ing essential oils for kids, you’ll probably find a lot of differing approaches. I call this “The Aromahead Approach.” For children younger than five, I often skip using essential oils on their skin. I diffuse them, instead. Little children tend to have sensitive and responsive systems. Diffusing essential oils, and using carrier oils, butters, and hydrosols (aromatic waters) can often be enough to nudge kids who are so young back toward health. For kids who are older than five, here are three gentle, effective, and versatile essential oils I like to blend with: • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) • Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) • Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)

Lavender Lavender is famous for its soothing presence. It’s amazing for skin care, and you can use it for bug bites, stings, burns, itching, and other forms of irritation. Lavender can help reduce inflammation and calm everything down! It’s also good if you want to help bruises heal more quickly. (A Lavender bruise blend is great to have around during summer when kids are playing outside.) 35

Lavender loves to children’s overall health, and can even help them breathe more easily when the sniffles show up. When it’s time for bed (or for easing anxiety throughout the day), you can use Lavender to help kids relax and sleep easily. Cedarwood Cedarwood’s warm, woody aroma is comforting and reassuring. Cedarwood offers for skin by calming inflammation, and you can use it for a wide variety of uncomfortable skin issues. This is also one of my first choices in respiratory blends for children. If I’ve got an adult recipe made with Eucalyptus—which is an amazing essential oil for respiratory but can be a little too strong for children—I’ll often substitute Cedarwood instead of Eucalyptus to create a kid-friendly version of the blend. Sweet Orange Children love the scent of Sweet Orange essential oil! It’s familiar and bright, and has a way of making kids say, “Mmm!” (As with all essential oils, be sure to store Sweet Orange in a place where kids can’t reach it.) It’s also relaxing, so you can use it in bedtime blends. Sweet Orange calms inflammation and is a good choice for relieving pain, such as sore muscles, or to soothe kids’ upset stomachs. Did you notice anything about these three oils? They have a lot of therapeutic properties in common, don’t they? They all skin and inspire relaxed and happy feelings. They all reduce inflammation (and pain), help you breathe more deeply, and are ive of overall health and well-being. These three oils complement one another’s effects. You can choose just one for your blend, or combine all three.

Ready for some recipes? Skin Soother You can keep this blend on hand for any little skin issue that pops up, such as a bug bite, bruise, or a small scrape. This blend is made at a 1% dilution. (This is the dilution used for kids’ topical blends in The Aromahead Approach.) 36

• 1 oz (30 ml) jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) • 4 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) • 2 drops Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) Make this blend in a 1 oz (30 ml) glass bottle. Pour the jojoba into the bottle, add the essential oils, then shake gently. Apply gently as needed. I Feel Calm and Happy Inhaler Aromatherapy inhalers are great for kids, because they can use inhalers all by themselves. • 2 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) • 2 drops Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) • 3 drops Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) Aromatherapy inhalers are very easy to make. The inhaler itself looks like a lip balm tube, and has a cotton insert inside. The cotton insert is what absorbs the essential oils. Here’s a video where I demonstrate the process for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QktN9Xstv8 Stop Those Sneezes! Diff Blend Diffusing essential oils for kids is simple! This blend offers relief during a cold, and can help reduce sniffling and stuffiness. If it’s bedtime, you can diffuse this blend for fifteen minutes before tucking the child in. • 2 drops Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana) • 3 drops Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) All you have to do is drop your essential oils into the diff. My Belly Feels Better Oil Sometimes kids get upset stomachs, and then what do they say? “My belly hurts!” This is a belly oil that they can massage into their stomachs and low backs to ease indigestion, nausea, or other tummy troubles . . . and then they can say, “My belly feels better.” • 1 oz (30 ml) jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) • 5 drops Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) • 1 drop Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Make this blend in a 1 oz (30 ml) glass bottle. Pour the jojoba into the bottle, add the essential oil, then shake gently. Apply gently as needed. 37

It can be a lot of fun to let kids help when you’re making these blends! Aromatherapy is a creative activity you can share, and then the products you’ve made together carry an even more special feeling. In this video I am making an essential oil body wash recipe that can help your sinuses feel clear and open. I love using it in my morning shower! I call it the “Sinus Clear Body Wash.” I mentioned above that I like to use hydrosols for kids younger than five. Hydrosols are created during distillation, at the same time as the essential oil is produced. The hydrosol is the water portion of the distillation, and it also has a rich aroma and therapeutic properties. Some hydrosols you can use for kids are Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), German Chamomile (Matricaria recutita), and Calendula (Calendula officinalis). You can spray hydrosols directly on children’s skin to soothe irritation, or spray them on blankets and pillows to sleep. Oh, and one final note! Maybe you’ve heard that citrus essential oils are phototoxic, meaning they cause skin reactions in sunlight. This is true for many citrus oils . . . but Sweet Orange is an exception! Sweet Orange is NOT a phototoxic essential oil, and you can feel free to use it without worrying about reactions in sunlight. Happy blending!

Carrot Seed thinks there’s nothing as relaxing and rejuvenating as a warm bath. Except, of course, for a good night’s sleep. 42

And Carrot Seed feels the most relaxed and rejuvenated of all when it combines the two. No, Carrot Seed isn’t suggesting you fall asleep in the bath tub! It created a soothing bath blend that s skin and inspires peaceful feelings that can help you sleep after you get out of the water. This blend is made with whole milk (yup, milk!). It’s best with whole milk, which carries more fatty lipids to help distribute the essential oils through your bath water and protect your skin. Sweet Sleep Bath Milk  1/2 cup (120 ml) whole milk  2 drops Carrot Seed essential oil (Daucus carota) 

2 drops Frankincense essential oil (Boswellia carterii)

You can make this blend in a measuring cup. Pour the milk into the measuring cup, add the essential oils and stir with a spoon. Then use all of it in your bath! Carrot Seed and Frankincense are both amazingly ive of skin, helping it to restore itself after a long day. They encourage healing and reduce irritation. And as they’re calming your skin, they’re also calming your emotions. Carrot Seed and Frankincense are a “dream team” when it comes to relaxation! You can also make this blend with salt instead of whole milk. Here are a few bath salt recipes you can use if you get inspired! (There’s even one for sore muscles there that I think you’ll love.) I want to note that in the book Essential Oil Safety, by Robert Tisserand and Rodney Young, Carrot Seed is on the list of essential oils to avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It may interfere with gestation, although they report that it’s not known which component of the oil could be responsible for this. I like to create different “kinds” of baths by using different Aromatherapy bath salts. When I need something to help me relax, I make a blend with comforting essential oils. I blend at a low dilution, usually around 1%. But let’s say you have over-extended yourself during the day—maybe by hiking a little farther than you planned. Your muscles will probably start to complain that evening. Then it’s time to fill up the tub and add some therapeutic bath salts! You can use essential oils that help muscles release tension. Here are two Aromatherapy bath salt blends you can try: one for relaxation, and one for sore muscles. They’re both 2 oz (60 ml) blends, which is enough for a single bath. If you like your blend, you can multiply the recipe and make a larger amount. Relaxation Bath Salt 

2 oz (56 gm) pink Himalayan salt 1 teaspoon (5 ml) jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis)



1 drop Neroli (Citrus aurantium var. amara)



3 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)



1 drop Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis)



Sore Muscles Bath Salt 

2 oz (56 gm) pink Himalayan salt 1 teaspoon (5 ml) jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis)



1 drop Black Spruce (Picea mariana)



2 drops Spike Lavender (Lavandula latifolia)



2 drops Frankincense (Boswellia carterii)



For each recipe, just add your pink salt to a 2 oz (60 ml) glass jar, then pour in your teaspoon of jojoba. Drop your essential oils into your blend. You can stir gently with a glass stir rod or the end of a spoon. Add the salt to your bath after the tub is full of water. Then relax! If you make more than enough for one use, I recommend making a fresh jar every few weeks. 44

Aromatherapy bath salts can also help when you’ve got a cold or flu. The warm water and essential oils are so soothing to body aches, and inhaling the oils with the warm air can help to reduce mucus and open your sinuses. You can learn recipes to help prevent colds and flu in my three-hour video class, “How to Protect Your Family from Colds and Flu.” The oils and dilutions we use for colds and flu are different—and there are different blending guidelines for children and adults. This class is a great way to learn all the ins-and-outs if you don’t have a lot of time . . . and you can rewatch it every year! Enjoy your bath salts! Clary Sage doesn’t like to overwork itself. It knows that “over work” doesn’t necessarily mean “better work.” Too much time at a desk can lead to sore shoulders and necks, and that distracts from work instead of facilitating it! That’s why Clary Sage likes to encourage its friends to get up and take a walk, or dance to their favorite song in the middle of the day. Feeling good is a great way to get your energy flowing so ideas can come more easily. Another great way to release tension and get that energy flowing? Shoulder and neck massages! Clary Sage makes its own massage oil, and offers shoulder and neck massages to its friends at their desks. Here’s one of its favorite recipes. “I Can See Clearly Now” Massage Oil  1 oz (30 ml) jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis)  9 drops Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) 

3 drops Lemon (Citrus limon)



6 drops Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)

You can make this blend in a 1 oz (30 ml) glass bottle. Combine the jojoba and essential oils in the bottle, shake gently, and you’re finished! Massage the blend into your shoulders and neck when they’re feeling tight. Try taking it to work and keeping it by your desk. It’s an excellent friend when you want to concentrate, but you’re feeling a little too stressed or tense.

This is also a great blend to use for a tension headache—as it helps your shoulders and neck release tension, the muscles in your scalp follow along and relax as well.
