Session One: Encountering Jesus  In Resurrecting Jesus: Embodying the Spirit of a Revolutionary Mystic, teacher Adyashanti delves deeply  into the Jesus story, freeing it from conventions and images that are embedded in Western culture to  show the deep mythic underpinnings of the gospels. He shows how the Jesus story can be read as a map  of awakening, and how each of us—the sons and daughters of God—can experience the stages of this  journey in the unfolding realization of our one divine nature.  My Connection to Jesus  Adyashanti begins the first session by mapping out his own connection to the Jesus story: from family  discussions of spiritual issues and childhood insights; through his early experiences in the Zen Buddhist  tradition and first encounters with a dimension of being far beyond personal psychology; and finally to  an intense connection with the Christian mystic Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, which led to a profound heart  opening.  He discusses the distinct presence, or transmission, of Christianity—in essence, a transmission of love,  worldly engagement, and spiritual embodiment that is very different in flavor from the transmission of  Buddhism. Finally, he talks about how his realization that the Jesus of the Gospels is radically different  from the Jesus of church doctrine prompted him to delve into the Jesus story to explore the true heart  of Jesus' teaching. 

Session Two: The Journey of Awakening  In this session, Adyashanti lays out the key events of the Jesus story as a map of awakening. This journey  takes Jesus—and each being on the path of awakening—though a series of internal stages that  correspond with the external events out of his life. The key here is that no one can be a spectator of the  journey—we must become it.  These stages include: the calling; the awakening; trials and tribulations; abiding tranquility or inner  unification; transfiguration or the death of ego; crucifixion or the death of self; and resurrection or  transmutation.  When you reorient your life to and from spirit, Adyashanti teaches, you realize you so loved the world  that you poured yourself forth into it. That pouring forth was your birth and you are here to redeem  whatever you encounter in your life, to awaken within everything the deep reality of its own existence.   

 

Session Three: The Jesus Story: Birth, Baptism, and Temptation  Baptized in the Holy Spirit  The virgin birth, Adyashanti teaches, is an ancient mythical motif, one that points to eternal being  breaking through the latticework of time. This is no one‐time, historical occurrence, but rather a  description of every human incarnation. Each of us as a human being, an incarnated form, comes from  the pairs of opposites, the mother and the father, but as eternal beings we are unborn, undying, beyond  the pairs of opposites.  In the Gospel of Mark, however, there is no manger, no wise men, no virgin birth—Jesus simply appears  at the river Jordan, as prophesied by John the Baptist. John's baptism of water represents repentance,  forgiveness, purification of past burdens. The second baptism that Jesus receives, of the Holy Spirit and  of fire, is of a different order entirely. Spirit is the symbol for transcendence and transformation, and  here it descends upon him, reorienting his life as he suddenly understands that he is radiant  consciousness—divine being itself. In this moment, his whole life is reoriented.  Trials and Temptations  Following his baptism by the Holy Spirit and by fire, Jesus goes out into the desert for forty days and  forty nights. During this time he is tempted by Satan—what we might, in modern psychological ,  call the "shadow." Similarly, in the Buddha's story, Buddha faces the temptations of Maya—"illusion"— beneath the Bodhi tree.  When we realize our own divine being, Adyashanti says, not all of our shadow material is instantly  dispelled; the awakening process scours the unconscious, stirring up anything that needs to be brought  to light so we can live what we have realized. What our own encounters with Satan ask of us is this:  What does it mean to live in alignment with our hearts?  Jesus faces three temptations in the desert, each with a specific teaching. The first has to do with fear  and survival, the second with hubris, and the final one with power. Through this process, Jesus discovers  his role as a teacher and the correct orientation toward his life and fate. 

Session Four: The Jesus Story: Healing and Speaking Truth  Stories of Healing  In this video, Adyashanti looks at the healings performed by Jesus in the context of siddhis—spiritual  powers that may arise as consciousness opens—and explores the role of sin and forgiveness in healing.  Even when the religious authorities are threatened by Jesus' healing ministry and offended by his  association with "sinners," Jesus crosses all the boundary lines that separate people because, from the  point of view of spirit, he sees what we all share in common, not what separates and divides us. For him,  sin is not a moral failing but simply a case of missing the mark. Our fundamental nature is not flawed,  and—whatever church doctrine may say about "original sin"—to be born is no mistake. 

Faith in Things Unseen  Jesus' healings continue, first with the story of a woman who has been bleeding for many years, then  with the story of Legion. In the case of the woman, Jesus says to her, "Your faith has made you well; now  go in peace." Jesus is asserting that it isn't his power that has healed her, rather that he's doing the work  of the Father, and is a conduit for the healing presence of the divine.  In the story of Legion, Jesus casts out Legion's demons, and this man who had essentially been insane is  instantly brought into alignment with divine being. Legion becomes calm, composed—even enlightened.  Jesus' power to cast out pain and suffering, Adyashanti says, tells us something about learning to  embody our own intense emotional states and reach that place of great peace and love at the core of all  experience. 

Session Five: The Jesus Story: Parables, Miracles, and Transfiguration  The Parables  In this video, Adyashanti explores one of the key teachings of Jesus—the parables—and likens them to  koans in the Zen tradition. The parables also involve a direct transmission from teacher to student. The  disciples, within the resonant field of Jesus' enlightened consciousness, are invited not to provide  answers, but to become the answers.  These parables also provide questions for all of us to contemplate. For example, the metaphor of the  seed on rocky ground asks us to clarify our own deepest aspiration so that our attachments to ego,  desire, fear, and power are let go and cannot choke the growth of spirit.  Those for whom the seed fails to grow represent a certain order of being, that of ego consciousness. But  Jesus resides in a different order of being—the kingdom of heaven, the enlightened state. In these  teachings, he's asking each of us: Are you ready to leave your old world behind?  Miracles and Transfiguration  Here, Adyashanti explores the miracles of the Jesus story, including the miracle of the Transfiguration. In  the first miracle, the disciples are frightened by the wild sea tossing their boat, while Jesus sleeps calmly  in the stern. When they wake him, he commands the sea to be quiet, to be still, and immediately the  waves are calmed. For Jesus, there is no fear, no anxiety; everything is fine exactly as it is. This same  calm acceptance is what we cultivate through meditation and spiritual practice.  In the Transfiguration, Jesus realizes his identity as the divine. In this way, his realization is  fundamentally different from that of Moses in the Old Testament. Moses has a relationship with  radiance; Jesus becomes radiance. Here, Adyashanti discusses what it means to have identity as the  divine, and discusses his own transfiguration experience.   

 

Session Six: The Jesus Story: The Last Supper and Gethsemane  Holy Rage  In this video, beginning with Jesus' encounter with the priests of the temple, Adyashanti looks at the  transforming power of spirit to burn away old structures and illusion. Enlightenment, he says, doesn't fit  neatly into structures of authority. When religious institutions fail in their primary purpose to connect us  to the mystery of existence, they are ripe for the transforming force of spirit to purify them.  The Last Supper  The Lord's Supper, Adyashanti says, operates within the Jesus story as a mystical initiation ritual. With  the sharing of bread and wine, Jesus is asking his disciples: What does it mean to share the true body— not the flesh of the human body, but the essence of the mystical body, spirit, consciousness, suchness" Soon after, Judas the betrayer arrives with  the soldier who will arrest Jesus, and the story moves swiftly toward conclusion. 

Session Seven: The Jesus Story: Crucifixion and Resurrection  The Trial of the Son of God  At this point in the story, the Pharisees have turned Jesus over to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of  Judea, for trial. Pilate is clearly fascinated by Jesus and on some level seems to understand who and  what he is. He asks Jesus if he is the king of the Jews, but receives only a cryptic response.  On several occasions, Pontius Pilate asks the crowd of Pharisees outside if he should release Jesus, but  they say, "He ought to die, for he made himself the son of God." The Pharisees here represent all those  worldly institutions who are more concerned with temporal power than with eternal truth. 

Crucifixion and the Death of Self  Next, Adyashanti explores the Jesus story's climactic scene—the Crucifixion. The first version he  examines is from the gospel of Mark—a brief and heartbreaking scene that ends with Jesus' cry, "Why  have you forsaken me?"  Adyashanti looks at the Crucifixion as a representation of the death of self; all sense of a separate self  dies on the cross. With the loss of the personal self comes the loss of a personal God. This sense of being  forsaken is a profoundly universal experience, even for those who have not attained this state of  realization.  In other gospels, the crucifixion scene is prolonged and expanded. In Luke, Jesus is crucified alongside  two thieves, and says of them, "Forgive them, for they know not what they do." The thief who  understands who and what Jesus is points to our capacity to recognize our own divinity within the self.  The Resurrection  We reach the final key scene of the Jesus story, the Resurrection. The Resurrection is unique in spiritual  literature; unlike Eastern teachings, in which the point of the spiritual journey is to get off the wheel of  karma and out of the world of time, the Jesus story focuses on the opposite movement, from the  kingdom of heaven into the human condition.  But what is it that resurrects? What comes back to life after the death of the self? There is nothing left  to do, Adyashanti says, except live as a benevolent presence in the world. This is what it means to be in  the world but not of it. 

Session Eight: Archetypes in the Jesus Story  The Stories of Peter and Judas  In this session, Adyashanti looks at how five key figures in the Jesus story—Peter, Judas, Pontius Pilate,  Mary Magdalene and John—function as lenses of interpretation on the divine and as spiritual  personality types that provide insight into our own deepest nature by demonstrating ways of relating to  the spiritual journey.  In this video, Adyashanti looks at the figures of Peter and Judas. Peter continually misses the mark at  crucial moments in the story. He is untruthful with himself and overestimates his own ability; ultimately,  he is driven by a deep‐seated fear of which he is unconscious.  Judas sees who Jesus truly is, but never finds the same in himself. His cynicism and disconnectedness  seem to stem from a deep wound. Adyashanti likens him to a hungry ghost in Buddhist tradition: no  matter how much he takes in, he can never be filled.     

The Stories of Pontius Pilate, Mary Magdalene, and John  Adyashanti continues his examination of archetypes in the Jesus story with Pontius Pilate, Mary  Magdalene, and John. Pilate's nature is that of the rational leader. He represents the choice between  eternal truth and the relative realm of worldly power and influence. From Pilate, we learn the  importance of asking what the truth is.  Mary Magdalene is the archetype of redemption. Her nature is to love, and in meeting Jesus she  awakens to the higher dimension of love. Jesus says to her, "Your faith has saved you. Go in peace." The  nature of this faith gives birth to a new morality—one that comes from direct knowing rather than  societal rules.  Finally, John—the beloved disciple—is someone who just naturally gets it right. As someone who is  always present in the story at the most important and most intimate moments, he serves as an  archetype for the divine witness. He represents an intuitive sense of right relationship with divine being. 

Session Nine: The Christ Presence  Jesus and the Christ  In this final session, Adyashanti talks about how his approach to the Jesus story is an invitation to each  of us to resurrect the power of this narrative and discover a true, engaged spirituality in the story and in  ourselves. Ultimately, he says, it doesn't matter if we treat the story as history or as myth, but what is  important is how we can internalize its message and make it our own.  We can put ourselves in the place of Jesus, that spiritual revolutionary who brings the spark of eternity  into the world. We can look through the eyes of the various characters in his story; we can even look  through the eyes of God. Each of these lenses brings new life to the story and helps us see it as our own.  The relationship of humanity to divinity is the relationship of Jesus to the Christ presence, and of each of  us to the divine. The Jesus story is not—as in most spiritual stories—about transcendence, but about  eternity descending into the world of time and space. In the same way, each of us is an eternal being  living our human drama. When we can understand and embody this we move in the world as the  divine—as sacred love.
