Defending the America’s Cup, the competition for the oldest trophy in international sports (dating back to 1851), will be Oracle Team USA, representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club, which won the Cup in 2010 and 2013. The long wait is finally over.After all of the preparation, all of the practice racing, all of the talk and all of the anticipation from sports fans around the world, the 35th America’s Cup is now upon us.

THIS YEAR — LOCATION, CHAMPION & SCHEDULEThe 35th America’s Cup is being held at Golden Gate Yacht Club in Bermuda. Team Oracle USA is the defending champion after coming back to beat Emirates Team New Zealand 9-8 in a thrilling final series at the same venue in 2013.

May 27-June 4: America’s Cup qualifiers There are six teams battling for the right to be challengers to Team Oracle USA, which also takes part in this round (although they are already guaranteed to defend the trophy). Every team races each other twice in one-on-one round-robin racing, scoring one point per win. The top four teams reach the challenger semifinals. June 5-9: America’s Cup challenger semi-finals The top four split off for two best-of-nine series, with two races held a day. Defenders Team USA Oracle drop out at this stage of the competition. June 11-13: America’s Cup challenger final The top two challengers left slug it out in another best-of-nine series for a place in the big one.

June 18-19: America’s Cup match Defenders Team Oracle USA will take on the top challenger for The Auld Mug in a best-of-13 (first to seven) series. Four races are held on the first two days, then there’s a crucial five-day break before the series resumes. WHAT IS America’s Cup? The America’s Cup dates back to 1851, is held every four years and attracts some of the world’s best sailors, yachts entrepreneurs and sponsors. Much like Formula One racing, it’s not only a test of skills but of teamwork, technology and management. The events ultimately come down to a series of match races between two yachts — the defender vs the challenger. American, Swiss and New Zealand teams have dominated the event since the turn of the millennium, while Australia scored a famous victory with Australia II in 1983 but has not presented a challenger in three decades. Regarding television and the internet, America’s Cup organizers have arranged more than 40 hours of coverage beginning the first day of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers, which start May 26, via NBC Sports, NBCSN and the NBC Sports app. In The World Sailing Show’s preview of the 35th America’s Cup, they take a close look at the teams and consider how they might fare over the next five weeks. They will look at the road to the America’s Cup and explain what the successful Challenger needs to do to be selected to take on the Defenders, Oracle Team USA. Finally, they will find out directly from some of the skippers about how hard these boats are to fly and how they rely on innovative new technology.
